Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Absolutely beautiful, each one of them! I love how you managed to give each of them a distinct personality through lighting, very accurate to their respective movies.

Man, I can't tell you enough how good it is to have the bridges complete! I feel like a weight has been lifted from me and I'm so excited to look ahead at what's next!

And with that, it's time to begin on the exterior model of the Refit. Before I start modeling the ship per se, I figured it would be good to nail down the exact dimensions of a standard docking port. I'm starting by modeling the male end of the docking ring that you'll find on the end of the travel pod and shuttle. I was able to get the geometry of the male ring done tonight (sans doors) and thought I'd post a pic. PLEASE NOTE that I just threw a random procedural texture on there (my "painted metal" TOS engineering tool material ;)) to highlight edges. This is not how it will look when finished.

Those bridges are absolutely gorgeous, but yeah I can definitely relate to how the 'weight comes off' at the end of a long project! I hope that you make new images using those sets from time to time though :)

How did you calculate the size of the docking port here? Are there any behind the scenes documents to reference?

There was a ton of never-before released TMP and TWOK blueprints that made it to auction a few years back. Images of these blueprints were then circulated. Of them, the blueprints for the torpedo bay, the orbital office interior, and the travel pod set itself all contain measurements for the docking port, which has an outer diameter of 7.5 feet and an inner diameter of 7 feet. The docking port schematics in MSGTTE also reflect this measurement.

I can easily see that being the docking ring on a very worn out and well used space tug or hauler. :)

I've been reading this thread the past few days, that's some amazing work you are doing here :) I was going to post my own Constitution here, but now that you are building yours, you'll probably blow mine out of the water, heh. Anyway, I'll be following with interest!

Thanks for the compliments! But remember: It’s not a competition. Please don’t feel deterred from starting a thread and positing pics of your own work. Hell, when I started out 20 years ago posting images of my work online, there were plenty of other artists that “blew mine out of the water”, and still are! But the thing is we learn and grow as artists when we are able to take in feedback from people excited about our subject matter. Either use their excitement to fuel your energy or take their constructive criticism so that you can know where to improve. It’s what the fan art forum is for!

Oh, I've been doing CG as a hobby for a long time as well. I know the drill :) It's still intimidating to compare your work with others, and especially in a subject like the Enterprise. I'm relatively close to done with my exterior. I'll render a few general views and start a thread later then. Maybe we can share notes ;) You seem to have more reference resources than what I've been able to find.

I probably don't need to say this as you already know, but for the benefit of those that this may not occur to, remember that these doors retract, not into the Travel Pod, but into the skin of the Enterprise (or wherever it docks). That's the only way there's enough room for them to even open.

Of course! I'll be working on the female end of the docking port tonight, complete with door gripper mechanisms ;)

Remember ladies and gentlemen, this is only an exhibition, not a competition, so please, no wagering. ;)

You know, that never occurred to me before, but as soon as I thought about it for a moment, I realized that of course must have been how they worked.
