I believe DS9 was greenlit somewhere around 1990 or 1991. Origins for the ideas of it go as far back as late 80s when TNG started to be successful. The Maquis/Cardassian/Bajoran stuff was written around that time(90 or 91) to lead up to DS9. I think Ensign Ro was going to be introduced to be Kira's role of the 2nd officer of DS9 but she declined so they changed it to Kira/Nina. DS9 was the last thing Gene Roddenberry gave the go ahead on.

In the lap of squalor I assure you.
Or Berman quickly cobbled ds9 together a few hours after JMS pitched him Babylon 5.

People say that BOBW is the best but I’ve always preferred Way of the Warrior more.

I think we remember BOBW so fondly because it was the first. It was something that Trek had not done prior to that--it picked up from a previous story line and it showed that episodic television was changing. There were better two parters later on, but emotionally BOTW probably holds a special place in our Trek memories for those of us who watched it when it aired.

I always wanted more serialized storylines when I was younger. 2 years after BOBW aired I was obsessively trying to tape a season of X Men cartoons with no commercials as a serialized never-ending movie. Serialization was just starting to be a thing.

I like the episodic / serialized hybrid that began with X Files (continuing with Buffy, Supernatural, Fringe, Person of Interest and the Arrowverse) but they are so often padded with filler; Its funny, how in this age of fully serialized shows, I have come all the way back around to enjoying the episodic nature of certain shows more.

As far as the actual episode goes, I always wanted Locutus to stay as an ongoing enemy, and I wanted Shelby to be the new XO to Riker's more Kirk-like Captain.

Wouldn’t have got New Frontier if that was so.

I'd take a much improved show over some books I'll never read, any day.

As much as I love Patrick Stewart, I would much prefer a Riker/Troi or New Frontier series right now.

You wonder say that if you read them. :)
I wouldn’t say the show would be better with those alterations.

Who knows? Maybe the Titan will guest star.

I've forgotten most of the space battles I've ever seen, including the one from "Identity, Part 2." The only space battles I really remember at all are the ones from Wrath of Khan and the two pivotal battles from Babylon 5, because they were struggles between people and personalities, not just swooping and swerving and pew pew pew.

"Best of Both Worlds, Part 2" was great, but not because of the sleep gimmick (which was cute, but not brilliant). It was great because of the character moments. The Admiral's controlled-but-impassioned rebuke to Shelby when she made a comment about Picard helping the Borg, the tension between the ambitious Shelby and Riker as he considers his own future while having to face the specter of his former captain, the intimately weary moment between Riker and Troi ("Seasoned!"), and, finally, Picard's stealth defeat of a hive mind that he should have had no chance against. It was a defining moment for TNG and Trek, despite what became of the Borg later.

Best episode of the series so far. Humor in its proper place. DS9-like space battles.
    Pitch perfect. <3

I agree. But I think the ultimate determination as to how "good" this episode was is going to be what consequences it has on the future of the series. Isaac, in particular, cannot go back to being a member of the crew without every one else being wary of him. Even if it is just the "B" plot, he needs to spend some on screen time redeeming himself.

This battle and "Sacrifice of Angels." "Way of Warrior" included both a space battle and shooting/hand-to-hand battle inside DS9. That's why it's a better comparison w/"Identity" since it also includes both battles....

Oh, the NPCs piled up alright, but "The Way of the Warrior" nerfed the Klingons, by forcing them to go head-to-head against main characters who were all protected by plot armor. Once the Klingons boarded DS9, plausibility went out the airlock. Odo was the only main character who believably had a chance, and maybe the Ferengi. The rest should have been toast. It was a joke.

Good is good. If they never made another episode, this was great.

There's actually evidence of a stationed based show as far back as the late 80s or 1990 on an asteroid before JMS pitched it. He pitched the idea to paramount when it was under a different leader than the one that headed DS9s development. Don't believe everything JMS says. I respect Babylon 5 and it was really good at being the arc based show almost from season 1-4. 5 it went off the rails a lot. DS9 wasn't near as focused till the Dominion War arc came in about 3 years into the show. In fact a lot of the first 2 seasons were just thrown away TNG scripts.
