I’ve got that “Sherlock Holmes” set plus a couple of “Best of” DVD’s by other companies with episodes of the show. All the DVD’s are using the same masters, the only difference being that some of the “Best of” DVD’s only have 3 or 4 episodes so they are not as compressed.

I was just thinking, but “X-Men Evolution” had its first 3 seasons released on DVD between 2004 & 2006, and around 2010 the home video rights reverted to Marvel so those DVD’s are no longer in print. However Season 4 never got released on DVD, even though it only had 9 episodes. It would be nice if Disney did a “Complete Series” release of its 52 episodes.

It does surprise me that Blake's 7 hasn't had a Region 1 release. Especially given its almost a sister show (of sorts) to Doctor Who. I can imagine it developing quite a following Stateside.

My wife and I were just talking about that yesterday. I was commenting on when Discovery was stuck in the mycelial network it reminded me of the mould that destroyed the Liberator in 'Terminal'.

    I definitely want a Region 1 release!

Wouldn't mind a reboot or continuation. I think Roger Allam, of 'Endeavour', would make a fine older Roj Blake and do justice to the late, great Gareth Thomas.

    Truly a tragedy... :(

Also, "Dharma and Greg" only got one season released on DVD, as far as I can find. :(

I remember HATING that show. Which is too bad because I loved the actress playing Dharma and couldn't stand Greg at all. I don't know if it was the character or the actor.

But it really should be released. Even for streaming.

Fair enough. I loved it to this day, mostly because there is some brilliant writing with Greg's dad. But, I get it :)

    And I agree.

Trek could change it and get rid of Greg:

    Dharma and Darmok

Space:1999 season two also isn't available in the US in HD that I'm aware of.

I'm surprised that it didn't at least develop a cult following on PBS in the '80s & '90s the way that Doctor Who and Red Dwarf did. I mean, they've released all of the original version of Survivors in R1 but no Blake's 7?

The sometimes-forgotten Golden Girls spin-off, Empty Nest, still hasn't received a DVD release (and I doubt it will). I used to really enjoy this show and would catch it in repeats on summer vacation from middle school. Pretty sure all episodes are on YouTube, though.

One show I only found recently was on DVD was the 90s cartoon, Duckman. I swiftly ordered the complete series off Amazon. For some reason I always thought this show was long-forgotten.

    Probably was :)

I remember the show from you mentioning the name but not what it was about until I watched the opening. then it came all flooding back - including the Jason Alexander provided the voice of Duckman.

Exactly. If DW and RD can 'break' over there, not to mention the BBC TV version of HHGTTG, then it honestly surprises me that B7 didn't. Was it shown on PBS?

Blake's 7 was shown on PBS. It was more towards the latter half of the 80s as I recall which caught the tail end of the GenX demographic that got turned on to Who some time earlier.

As my username suggests, I'm a B7 fan and have been since I first saw it. I paid utterly ridiculous prices for the DVDs and have never regretted it, as the show turned out to be every bit as good as I'd remembered it (if not better). Like every other show out there it's not for everyone, but IMO at least it's definitely worth trying.

This may be the best description I've ever seen of the appeal of buying DVDs and wanting them to be authentic representations of the show in question. Well said, May. :mallory:

As to the point of the thread... Hill Street Blues and Now and Again were the ones I'd really, really wanted (even though the latter unfortunately ended up with some different music here and there, I found I didn't care as much as I'd expected to). Cold Case is the main one that's left, but as others have mentioned it's highly unlikely to happen. Hmpf.

I would love to have that series on DVD.
Would there be license issues with novels?

I watched that episode of Quantum Leap on a network called Elrey and the song was in it, but I've not seen the episode on Netflix or on DVD so I don't know if it is included.

Most players can be modified easily with codes to play any region.

Sabrina the teenage Witch. I know it's on DVD, but the last episode with No Doubt's "running" playing at the end has been cut to instead have some generic pop song which ruins the overall feel. I doubt the proper version will ever be on DVD, which is sad.

Also the controversy with Cold Squad might have something to do with it as well.

Yeah, quite true. I was very surprised to see that streaming Fawlty Towers episodes have been "upgraded" so the picture is consistent, no difference between indoor videotape and outdoor film. I'm sure some would argue that this is an improvement, but I can't watch it, it's too different from what I grew up on. I've got the "real thing" on DVD, though.

I think the PBS distribution was around '88 or '89 (edit: looks like my memory was wrong, it was 1991 when it started showing in my area), and for whatever reason it didn't catch on. My impression was that with TNG on the air, many in the US target audience just couldn't get past the low-budget look of the the thing. I believe Doctor Who was on the wane for PBS by then, too, no longer the fundraising powerhouse it had been in the early '80s.

Anyway, someone probably took a bath on US rights and the conventional wisdom became "Blake's 7 won't work in the states."

I know that my local PBS station here in Seattle was airing Blake's 7 as early as 1985 back to back with the Peter Davison and Colin Baker era of Dr. Who.
I remember going on vacation with my family and coming back after missing several episodes on wondering where Blake was and why Avon was in charge of people I didn't recognize.
Seems I had missed the last episodes of the second season and some of the third.
As for shows not on DVD, The Midnight Special and Don Kirshner's Rock Concert are on the top of my list.
I know The Midnight Special has several Best Of's DVDs but they're edited highlights. I like to see the full performances.
