Its been a long time since 1979. Most dubbing companies don't rename stuff for giggles anymore.

I don't think it was renamed for giggles. There were still a lot of World War II vets in America, along with still harboring bad feelings towards Japan in 1979. The show would've likely had a much tougher time getting aired in the States without the changes they made.

Derek Wildstar, the Argo and company will always have a place in my fond childhood memories. I'm just glad we've grown to a point where they are no longer needed.

Did you watch the episode #21?

I haven't gotten there yet. Just finished Ep #17 in the mid-season snoozefest on the free version of Funimation. I still have a ways to go before I start seeing the battles featuring all these ships I've been drawing.

Although I will say that finally learning Desler's backstory and why the Gamilas invaded Earth in the first place was quite well done and made perfect sense. I had no idea they couldn't survive for all that long away from their homeworld.

Other than that, though, I've generally felt that much of the past few episodes have been filler.

Before he died, Ed Hawkins was actively lobbying the DOD, Pentagon and Department of the Navy to declassify wing camera footage of the Navy bombers that sunk Yamato, as they would have been long past any standard 25- or 50- year classification restrictions and fully accessible through standard FOI channels. There have been long-standing rumors that US pilots were doing low strafing runs - potentially bordering on excessive - on Yamato deck personnel during the final attack on April 7, 1945. No doubt, rationalized as legitimate justice served for the atrocity that was Pearl Harbor. Ed was never successful.

Sadly, I'm afraid that the famous salute scene, while a pleasant notion, is likely nothing more than hopeful fiction in reality. As far as I know, that film footage is STILL classified, taking it WAY beyond any reasonable attribution and/or security concerns. There must be some seriously horrid shit on those films that they don't want the world to see. I suspect they're just hoping the interest finally goes away in time.

Thank you, this is very instructive. Japan never really came to terms with its past like Germany did. They still see themselves in the WWI like noble warriors and victims of circumstance, forgetting that what they did in the occupied territories was sometimes comparable to the atrocities of their Nazi allies.

I read some chapters of their "patriotic" (and revisionist) mangas like Zipang and they are genuinely bone-chilling. I just can't imagine Italians or Germans doing a similar mainstream and successful work of fiction.

To be fair, the Axis had the cooler looking stuff and snappy uniforms. It didn't win them the war, but it got a lot of people drooling over their war machines for decades.

Oh, most certainly!

The Germans had the first assault rifles, the first night-vision systems (Nachtjägers), the first weaponized rockets, the first jet airplanes, the first infra-red based wireless communication field phones, the most advanced radar systems and quite possibly (at least, for a time) the most advanced armor.

The Japanese had the most highly-developed naval force up until several years after the Americans got into the fight. Their armor and small arms left a LOT to be desired, though. The experimental O-I was supposed to be the Yamato of super-heavy tanks. It had a large 105 mm main gun w/ several 47mm secondaries and 200mm thick armor but my 75 year old mom could probably outrun the thing. I've played it in World of Tanks. It kinda sucks.

The Italians? Well... They did have cool uniforms, but were basically SS knockoffs. Mussolini was Hitler's lapdog.

Even Girls und Panzer makes fun of the Japanese tanks. Mostly what you'll see in German.

Though on the other hand Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai uses only Japanese airplanes.

Its the Ark of Destruction activated. Possibly with Zordar's soul merged with it. Yamato goes full Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato mode (episode 25's title is literally "Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato"), but Episode 26 ties in all the little hints and metaphysical things that have gone on this series so the audience can have both a 1978 film ending, and a Yamato II series ending at the same time. As to where it leads.....who knows. That's for another writing team to decide.

I'm still pulling details out of those that have already seen it. Some went to Japan, other have access to Japanese streaming services (I think they are region locked for some places), and slowly theater goers will be showing some people the BD they bought. So there will be more and more spoilers over the next two months before both Funimation finishes their dub and the BDs comes out from Japan at the end of April.

I know that Tim Eldred of Our Star Blazers is currently in Japan for Yamatour 2019.
He's posted on his Facebook page that he's seen the final episodes and that it is very talky, but in a good way; and that it will require going back through the entire series to fully understand all the revelations in the final episodes.
