Yup. It's black and white thinking. If only there was some episode in a space show that taught us about that...

Season Two, so far, seems more balanced than S1. I think Pike was added to balance out the Burnham focus. Same with Spock. They seem to be leaning heavily on her relationship with Spock as a means to make us care about Burnham this season, since most Trek fans already have an emotional investment with the Spock character.

Despite the producers and writers acting like Burnham is teh greatest, I don't think they are blind to her divisive reception, and want to fix that.

With Berg and Harberts gone, it's certainly within the realm of possibilities.

I think it has improved. It feels likes it's embraced the idea that it is Trek and not "Game of Thrones" or some transcendent tv show and basically taken the the elements that work best and are using them.

As of S02E04 “An Obol for Charon,” I believe the show has improved this season. I hope to see it continue improving.

Pike is a welcome addition but, for me, unless they drastically reduce the focus on Burnham (which they're not going to do because she's "the star") I think this is as good as it's going to get for me and Discovery. I don't hate it but I don't love it. It's just... there. Thankfully there are other Star Trek shows on the horizon so I don't have to invest in Discovery anymore. I'm not enjoying the serialisation of the show. None of the ongoing plots deserve more than a filler episode at best. Serialisation can certainly work for Trek but the Dominion War, the Xindi Conflict and Voyager's journey home were a lot more exciting to watch than the frankly boring Klingon War, which ended anticlimactically, the red angel, the blob from beyond and Burnham's search for Spock.

Certainly not a bad show by any means and getting a lot more Trek like in Season 2 but still not a patch on what has come before it.

If you don't like the character, that is fine, but I don't see how you could have watched S02 E04 and think SMG isn't a good actress.

Why not? She can emote but her delivery is stilted and awkward. She was like this in Walking Dead and Once Upon A Time too so it can't just be down to her playing a Vulcan like character. Just my opinion.

I haven't got the feeling of chemistry between the characters yet that was in the other Star Treks. I remember it took a few seasons to get that feeling with Next Generation though, so I will give it time.

It's all a matter of taste, but I definitely don't agree with this. The other shows had "no chemistry" (VOY / ENT) or "slow chemistry" (TNG / DS9) when it came to the characters. This cast is excellent together right out of the gate.

Season 2 is definitely better than season 1. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed season 1, and Lorca & the whole Mirror U thing but this season, 'New Eden', Pike, this week's episode.... it's on a new level of enjoyment for me. Feels so much more like the traditional Trek we have known through the years.

And that’s why I don’t like it as much as S1 (though I still like it). I have watched 700+ hours of “traditional Trek” already. I’m more interested in non-traditional Trek.

Agreed. 90s Trek was great and enjoyable...back in the 90s. But just like I don't want to pretend that Marky Mark is a great, edgy singer, I don't want 20 year old TV storytelling in shows that are produced now. The 90s are over and if they ever return, please don't page me.

It is a delicate balance to strike as and it will not always be successful. It is unreasonable to expect Trek to be "safe and familiar" and take risks and be commenting on contemporary issues.

That would I guess explain why the latest ep felt more like an episode of Farscape?

Season 2 is a major improvement in many areas. Still not "good" and still not "prime" but it's approaching watchable on a regular basis.

This Forum's question is sort of like asking if I think 'How Much for Just the Planet' is better than 'Strangers From The Sky'.
