Random thought. With all of the Marvel shows that are being produced for the Disney streaming service, it really makes me regret the way they killed off the Warriors Three in Ragnarok. Such fun characters in the comics that were totally wasted in the movies.

I didn't even think of that. That would have been a great idea for a show, although maybe too expensive (since the Warriors Three would probably be traveling all over getting into a bunch of fights).

Considering the cultural impact that Black Panther has...it DOES deserve to win... Even if some technical do not meet YOUR expectations..what it has done for MILLIONS of people...that in my pinion makes it TRULY worthy of an Oscar. Oscars shouldn't be limited to movies showing black people as servants, slaves, gang bangers, etc.

Absolutely, but how about if Black Panther wasn't actually a good movie but still had the cultural effect ? Should it still be elevated to Oscar consideration ?

I'm not denying ANY of it's importance, I'm just saying that it's a good movie, not a great one, and that it's competing with movies that are in contention solely on their quality (presumably great) as a movie.

To nominate it due to 'other considerations' is unfair.

Best Picture is an interesting category. it's not just the sum of all the technical awards. You could lose Cinematography, Screenwriting and Directing to other movies and still win Best Picture. That's unlikely if the the same movie wins those 3 but if those awards are split between other films, totally plausible. Best Picture is the definition of "more than the sum of it's parts". And of course a movie's most important attribute is to connect with and move it's audience, which Black Panther did in spades. So from that perspective, I can see an argument for Best Picture.

I don't think that's a valid counterfactual. Black Panther wouldn't have been nearly so resonant and influential if it hadn't had something meaningful to say and said it very well -- if it hadn't proven that a movie with a mostly black cast and addressing black identity and political issues could rival any other big-budget blockbuster for quality and success with general audiences. The fact that it was a really good movie was part and parcel of why it had "the cultural effect." If it had been a piece of crap, African-American audiences would probably have been more disappointed and offended than inspired and uplifted.

Besides, since when have awards actually had anything to do with the quality of a thing? It's always been more about popularity with the people who vote for the awards than with objective merit, which is why so many great movies over the decades have been snubbed by the Oscars and so many comparatively mediocre ones have won.

Which is true, but I was somewhat overstating the case to illustrate my point.

And admittedly, this had occurred to me.

It's kind of why they end up giving Oscar's to people for more minor works when they realise they've messed up by not rewarding them when it was due - i.e. Pacino with Scent Of A Woman. Unless his performances in The Godfather movies, Dog Day Afternoon etc. really weren't as good.

I don't see what makes any of the other seven nominees so great that Black Panther doesn't belong. In my opinion, of course, but most of the oscar nominated movies are really boring and stupid. They have "meaning" according to someone but I don't agree. But then I really disdain the whole business about a whole bunch of rich people wasting a bunch of money and showing off about it.

Damn, that's disappointing. I was looking forward to that one. I'm still disappointed we didn't get Most Wanted and Damage Control.

Oh, that's an interesting development. I especially like the idea of him directing the possible Bucky and Falcon series.

I think both are good in their own way. A predominantly female network television show seems particularly unusual while at least movies had Ghost Busters and Oceans 8.

Oh, there have been a lot more TV series with female-dominated ensembles than movies. Right now, both Supergirl and Charmed on The CW are primarily female-led shows. There's Jessica Jones on Netflix, of course. There's Wynonna Earp on Syfy, and before that Lost Girl.

By network, I did mean broadcast television and ABC would be bigger than CW. I do agree it would have depended on the exact breakdown in the cast. If it's the breakdown of Supergirl, which is still a fairly balanced cast (with Jimmy Olson, Toyman's son, and J'onn J'onzz as well).
