That's sure what it sounded like – she mentioned that she couldn't have "activated" Tyler on board the Discovery while pregnant, so her son was gestated "ex-utero."

Yeah. Liked the concept ex-utero and why he was so small. I wonder if he grows up, which Klingon he will be in TOS.

we also need that pad and stylus back - all that unbelievably small stuff archer used is so not canon

50 years are 50 years, you just can't use 1960s' optics without making [insert four letter word of your own choosing] out of yourself

Back in the late 60s when I was watching this in high school, that was some pretty fancy shit!

Those things were rare. This is a case 2 different universes:
1) where only a handful of people in the quadrant communicate using screen-to-screen communication (DIS)
2) where only a handful of people in the quadrant communicate use holographic communication (ENT, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY)

Appears to be different universes.

Yeomen are enlisted clerks.

Did Rand go back to school to become Sulu's first officer?

Chapel went back to school.

If they both went back to school at the same time, an identical career deviation at the same time, maybe they were clinging together in a relationship?

don't you think a 2019 scifi show needs stuff that's kinda futuristic? - i do screen communication nearly on a daily basis

That much I agree with - the cast are a strong field of actors and she doesn't shine brightly among them particularly. She isn't an Avery Brooks, stealing every scene he's in. Oddly, she's probably closer to who they imagined for Sisko before the casting changed that character - the commander not the Captain, a bit unsure, a bit less effusive a personality than Picard or Kirk or Janeway. This is played well, but it means the lead sinks into the crowd a lot more.

Quite honestly, I though Avery Brooks was one of the more limited actors on DS9. Not bad - no one on that cast other than Terry Farrel was. But as amazing as he was in some episodes, there were others where he was kind of flat, or a bit of a giant ham. I think they figured out how to use him well well however as Sisko overall. Honestly, I think DIS could take some pointers here, insofar as Sisko was integral to the entire arc of DS9 in a way no other captain was, but there were plenty of individual episodes where he basically just put in three minutes in at the beginning and closing of the episode in his office, and wasn't otherwise seen or heard.

Hmm. Isn't...isn't that what we've been getting? Especially this season, I feel like Michael's had a lot to do, but Pike, Tilly, and now L'Rell/Ash have gotten a lot of focus separate from Michael. I feel like she's the lead of an ensemble, personally.

Certainly seems that way. The shit part of it - for SMG and for her character - is that her "arc" is almost entirely about Spock now (in the same way that Stamets is reduced to spore babble and mourning his dead lover). Spock - who isn't even onscreen yet - is overshadowing the purported lead of the show. This is a problem, and it shows why "Spock's sister" was a damn terrible idea.

So, Kathy Kennedy is going to be fired the same day Disco is canceled. Gotcha.

It’s next Tuesday, right after they install the tractor beam.

Of course, that's not what happened.

Not knowing what tears are = not a hallucination or ghost of Tilly's childhood friend.
Therefore, working assumption changed from mental health issue to external influence.
When did it start? Interaction with the asteroid fragment.
Burnham also interacted with asteroid fragment and it didn't zap her. Follows there is a difference between Burnham and Tilly's interactions.
So what does the asteroid react to? Spores.
Tilly worked with the spore drive.
Go to expert on spores for scan
Locate alien.

Not really that hard to follow, most of it is spelled out clearly in the episode.

What?! You mean it wasn’t an incoherent moment lacking all intelligibility? No one ever tells me anything!!! :brickwall: :scream:

But Orville gets by just fine looking futuristic without having to lean on holographic communication technology. One can't just pretend that communication seen in hundreds of episodes never happened. This would appear to be either an alternate universe or more advanced tech developed from changes in the timeline as a result of technology shared during the temporal cold war or Braxton's timeship Aeon. Hopefully we'll find out what's going on in a future episode.

I was so happy about last episode. Now this. Gave it a 2. I think I'd be done, but my wife likes watching it, and I like doing things with her.

Spock has mommy issues. Dear lord. . .

The contemporary obsession with backstory to brokenness. Cf. Wilder's Wonka to Depp's. Shatner's Kirk to Pine's. And so many more. I'm a psych instructor, even, and it's just. Too. Much. Everything in this culture must be EXPLAINED. TOS nailed it: Archetypal characters out of the box going out and having adventures rife with joy and . . . discovery. This show is just . . . bleak, man. Yikes.

Now Amanda is pissed at Burnham for being a meanie, for Spock's own good. I don't want a soap opera.

And the whole puzzle box about red lights and red angels. I don't care for puzzle boxes.

And Game of Thrones-esque machinations and violence. (If this means we can finally be done with the Klingons, I'll take it though.)

And Section 31.

And a spore being who gets sucked out of Tilly and isn't a bundle of mycelial threads, but a big bundle of tar? Look out, Tasha. The being said she needed Tilly. So, she couldn't have talked with it and found out why? That seems kinda important and starfleety: y'know . . . communicate with the alien, novel concept. The removal was crazily rushed. I hope it proves to be unwise to crew to have acted so.

If you like this, good for you. I like things other people don't, that's for sure. Be well.

[edit: I forgot: "Ohyeahwehadababyandhehasyourcomplexion." wow, left field; Is this from before the showrunners were fired for being mean? (Please? Say there's hope other than Picard show.)

Or one could be less literal minded and realize, as someone pointed out elsewhere (can’t remember who nor where—sorry), that Pike didn’t want the other captain to see Amanda (which would have been much more difficult to pull off with a 360 degree hologram). Also seems likely the other captain was mildly ribbing Pike, the way some people do with my father and his rotary dial phone.

orville is not trek

if trek had ended after tng nobody had a problem with discovery (by the people who made star trek).

trek's problem in a way that it still exists - i see it kinda like pieces by shakespeare - every incarnation is different and of course some of those differences stem from time and technical opportunities

And that’s a choice the TPTB on Orville made. Whether that be for budgetary or creative reasons, we don’t know. I for one am glad that the budget and the creatives on Disco have allowed them to show technology based on a future extrapolated from today as opposed to 1966. Your mileage may (and obviously does in this case) vary.

It could theoretically be the same universe but void of continuity or without the law of non-contradiction in place. Maybe the whole thing is Benny Russell's story and Benny's writing a new story while forgetting or not caring about how it fits in with the rest of the stories. As they've said on star trek plenty of times: "If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"
