Have to agree here - SMG is a damn fine actress. And in any ensemble-piece, she clearly would stand out as one of the better ones.

But I'm not entirely convinced she has what it takes to carry a complete show on her own. At least she hasn't found it yet in this particular role.

It's a bit weird to describe it. I love Robert Duncan McNeil, and Tom Paris was one of the highlights of the VOY cast. But overall, it was probably for the best that he, in this role, wasn't the sole "main" character, and instead Kate Mulgrew (who absolutely has the presence to carry a show) and later Jeri Ryan and Picardo were taking main stage for a majority of the time.

As for SMG - I absolutely want to keep her. But at the same time, I think she should be integrated as the centerpiece of an ensemble (like Ellen Pompeo in Grey's anatomy:guffaw:) instead of being a traditional sole "lead" character that the entire show revolves around.

I have known of instances where a actor of limited abilities was hired for a role. Sometimes it is more than acting ability which gets the person the job. Sometimes they get the job because the casting director is looking for that "look" or the actor is a well known person and there is a hope that the name will put butts in the seat. It is about looks, it is about what draws the audience, it is about accommodating cultural changes, etc.

I did enjoy seeing the SMG smile in the latest episode. The actress has a wonderful smile. She was not the worst part of the episode. I would give that to the coda, all that Section 31 stuff. I despise shadowy cartoony organizations and conspiracies.

Hmm. Isn't...isn't that what we've been getting? Especially this season, I feel like Michael's had a lot to do, but Pike, Tilly, and now L'Rell/Ash have gotten a lot of focus separate from Michael. I feel like she's the lead of an ensemble, personally.

There is a little evidence of it. Apparently just holding up a black badge is enough for Tyler to know who she works for.
To be fair, remember there were PLENTY of "Black Badged" crew on the U.S.S. Discovery and aspects of the ship itself were HIGHLY CLASSIFIED. Tyler was Security chief under Lorca so it's no surprise he heard rumors of/knows what a "Black Badge" represents. I would expect the majority of ST: D's crew knows of, or had direct contact with elements of Section 31 - and those who didn't heard a lot of rumors.

Captain Vela: “Chris, you and my bisabuela Nena are the only two people in this quadrant still communicating on screens” - every ship-to-ship visual communication on TOS and the movies (except a scene from star trek 6) communicated on screens. Every other series, except for a couple scenes in DS9 with the holo communicator, used screens.

Was it a dig to us fans who wanted that instead of the stupid holograms maybe?

That's the joke.

I interpreted that as a winking acknowledgment that, in real life, times have changed. Kinda like that bit on DS9 where they cutely acknowledged that Worf didn't look much like the old-school Klingons on TOS: "We do not speak of it to others."

I don't think it was a "dig" at anyone. Just a way of gently admitting that the traditional STAR TREK screens look kinda retro these days--and are a thing of the past.

It got a chuckle out of me.

okay, but how is this not a canon contradiction? Screen communication was commonplace from starbases, other ships, planets, shuttles, you name it.

Pretty good episode, lot of twist and turns.

The cinematic look and budget continues to amaze. Really great looking star trek, like a movie every week.

Michelle Yeoh is so bad ass. The look of Lorel and Voqs face says "didn't we ate your heart? "
I like the black ops team, hope they have more of crew and their missions.

Why do holograms still look like holograms in the future? If you can use space algae to transverse the galaxy in seconds you should be able to make a decent looking hologram.

we also need that pad and stylus back - all that unbelievably small stuff archer used is so not canon

50 years are 50 years, you just can't use 1960s' optics without making [insert four letter word of your own choosing] out of yourself
