Season 2 Episode 1 is free to watch on the CBS All Access Youtube Channel (USA Only)

At this point there are almost 375k views... (in less than 48 hours)
Barely 2000 comments...
And just about an equal split between :techman: &.

I really doubt that CBS is at all worried about the video having any kind of substantial impact on their subscriptions.
If anything, the number of "eyes" that it has acquired in the last two days is most likely a good thing.

Which can't be proven. It's just your personal insinuation. Essentially, you are creating your own concerns.

Of course it can be proven. A quick scroll through the YouTube comments for Nerdrotic or MechaRandom42 reveals tons of uses of the buzzwords of contemporary prejudice and hate. Why should we care about that? Because many of the channels are mobilization a discourse of hate and anger that is based in fear--fear, largely, of people who aren't white and male. They collect people under a crusade to win back the world from what they perceive as the scourge of diversity. And these channels have bled outward, influencing the broader disorder and reception of media. I have seen this in some people I teach recently, who have begun to learn criticism and critique through these types of channels, with rage substituting for analysis. And that's something I know from their testimony, not from inference or insinuation. That's something we should all be concerned about.

Most of those views are coming from pre-video ads that CBS is paying for. They're not organic and not representative of interest in the show.

Yep that's how it works. Typical network or studio tactics.

You should see the way Sony tried to control the narrative on YT a few yrs back.

Based on the comments that the previous user posted here, none can really be proven as specifically meeting the prejudicial accusations that you are leveling. It's a major over-exaggeration.

Since you mentioned Nerdrotic there, yes he seems to have the most traffic and views of all the Trek channels, and the largest weekly audience. Largest platform. His criticisms of Discovery are fair, logical and very well-articulated.

It's silly to paint all the criticism towards STD as simply 'hate speech.'

I don't see any comments complaining about the fact that Micheal Burnham is a black women. Maybe there's one or two out of 1600+ comments? But I don't see any.

Oh, they're absolutely there, at least in my quick scroll through. But the point of my comment was to identify a handful of common complaints that were indicative of the overall tenor of the comments.

What exactly are complaints about SJWs or PC culture if not hateful and prejudicial?

Edit to add: I'd appreciate it if you didn't paint my comment as dismissing all criticism of DSC as hate speech, which is a rather inaccurate interpretation.

You have no evidence of that. It's conspiracy theory nonsense.
Huh? They're running it as an ad. That's not an opinion or theory. And there's nothing wrong with doing so, it's just advertising.

Personally I think it's much more effective than the TV advertising they've been doing because with YT ads you can target audiences by interest.

I dislike SJW and PC Culture. I often make fun of it. But I certainly don't harbor hateful or prejudicial attitudes (for the most part). SJW and PC Culture has also gotten as toxic as those they take issue with. SJW/PC culture is the butt of many jokes, coming from those not necessarily prejudiced against any specific race, creed or gender.

It's presumptuous to say that those who dislike the show and cite those reasons have prejudicial attitudes.

That wasn't just at you specifically. I have seen members here saying things along those lines.

Look, this isn't about what attitudes anyone harbors. It's about how words affect the people they're directed at, regardless of intent. Think about it: you could say the worst things imaginable and shirk responsibility for them simply saying, "Oh, but I'm not prejudiced." No, it's up to the people who are being called a term to decide if it's offensive. And SJW is offensive. It's a pejorative used to dehumanize anyone who cares about social justice, equity, or diversity. It once referred to people who championed social justice solely for their own prestige, but has long ago ceased to hold that meaning, fueled in part by people posing as their idea of the most outrageous SJW on Twitter and Tumblr and then sharing screenshots of their hi-jinks online to fuel outrage. SJW is a term that chases bogeymen while participating in ad hominem. It's just about as anti-Star Trek as a term can get.

I think I'm done with this particular thread. It's not fun.

There's nothing wrong with being PC or SJWs, or their culture.

That's an issue for debate, but TBH us debating it here won't solve anything in the larger sphere. It definitely won't change the narrative on Youtube, and these channels growing in popularity.

Agree to disagree.

A quick scroll through the YouTube comments for Nerdrotic or MechaRandom42 reveals tons of uses of the buzzwords of contemporary prejudice and hate.

This rather depends on what you find to be "buzzwords". Reviewer John Price was recently accused of sexism for his use of the term "treasonous meltdown" in regards to Burnham in the pilot… the terminology was declared "gendered" by the accuser.

By any rational standard that accusation was absurd, yet there it was.

By the same token, one could point to the prejudiced language of many of those who have spread vitriol in the cause of Discovery apologetics. Even looking past the hateful name-calling some employ in response to the slightest trace of disdain for the show (pro-tip: continuity concerns do not justify claims of bigotry), a shocking number of those claiming to be anti-bigotry Discovery fans are themselves spreading the modern varieties of acceptable bigotry, and with a straight face.

Rather than attempt to damn or defend the show by pointing to its strangest fans and holding them up as some sort of rallying cry and ad hominem against the critic or defender . . . such nonsense being a common tool among the political hate-monger monsters of our era, be it Hannity or Maddow . . . it is far better to consider the statements made and judge them on their own merits, sans tribalism. After all, we see what further fracturing that leads to.

For instance, read the breakdown of the plot "Brother" linked below . . . you can even skip to the red and blue text . . . and tell me how there is hate in that, and why it should therefore be ignored:

Most haters of DISCO aren’t Alt-Right, but most Alt-Right hates DISCO.
The second part I agree with. The first part is very debatable. Given what many haters say and the terms they use it would be very hard to separate many (not all but many) haters from the alt-right crowd. If they don't want to apart of that crowd and still dislike Discovery then they should choose different words to express themselves. They should check who they associate themselves with. Cause if they talk like them, like their post or tweet then I'm going to consider them apart of the alt-right as well. I think it's actually very safe to say though almost all of the haters on youtube are apart of the alt-right crowd based on the very post they make on the videos and terms they use. It's rare to find one that doesn't use the terms in question among other things they say.

What terms are you referring to? Can you give me an example of a few posts on the video that a hard to distinguish from being alt-right?

The only thing this review shows is that author hates the DSC and does not understand what he is watching. That's why he has problems with timeline. And his criticism that Enterprise got new uniforms and the rest of the fleet has old ones is a complete nonsense in the context of canonical knowledge from this series.

BTW current results on youtube: 1.7k :techman: and 1.2k:thumbdown:.
