What the heck. Re-posting a post of mine from almost a year ago. It's an "oldie" but a goodie...

"Folks, believe me, I don't know what Real Star Trek is but Real Star Trek is the best Star Trek you've ever seen. No one makes better Star Trek than the people who make Real Star Trek. That I can tell you. But no money in the future? Sad! And bumps on foreheads. What is that? Can you imagine looking at that on your TV every week? But that's okay. I like Star Trek. Real Star Trek, folks. See all those beautiful women Captain Kirk kissed? 10s, all of them. And I love the Ferengi! Any Ferengi fans out there?! I love the Ferengi. Let me tell you any Star Trek that treats the Ferengi poorly is Fake Star Trek! It's Fake Star Trek, people."

Or maybe Zora hallucinated the whole thing. Being set adrift in space for a thousand years is not likely to go easy on her mental state (depending on how much of that time she was actually sentient, of course).

Finally got around to this one. i'm totally okay with not having greater context and backstory and enjoyed it for what it was: a very well-acted, emotional 18 minute human journey the way Trek does best.

Discovery exists 1000 years in the future? Is this canon?

Yes the episode is Canon, but you misunderstand what happened.

The episode is set a thousand years after the crew abandoned Discovery, but the ship is still expecting the crew to come back "eventually" Also we don't know when it was that the crew jumped ship, they could have already been ten thousand years into the past or the future.

Remember in The Restaurant at the end of the Universe where Arthur Zaphod and Ford Time travelled To the end of the universe instantaneously, meanwhile Marvin the paranoid Android Just waited in the parking lot for a billion years for his "friends" to catch up?

Something similar might be in play.

Hey, no reason why the ships should just crumble to dust in a vacuum. Starfleet just has this odd habit of retiring ships after a decade (NX-01, even though we saw she was still spaceworthy 100 years later in "E2") or two.

My thinking now is that the USS Discovery will indeed jump into the future and remain there (with the crew also carrying on their adventures within further seasons, in a future beyond that of TNG). So perhaps Calypso is showing what happens to the starship eventually but with more yet to come on how it happened (and its lead up).

It’s perhaps a reason why we don’t hear of Michael Burnham, the USS Discovery, or sporedrive tech - they have departed the timeline never to return during the cage era Prime timeline. And nobody talks about it because they are presumed lost in space / destroyed with all of the secrets / crew the ship possessed...

There are still several hundred thousand roadworthy Model Ts. Henry Ford used vanadium steel alloy frames for reasons only he knows, so the things are durable beyond belief. But they're not driven daily except by a few.

And there's a certain Tesla Roadster out there.. ok it won't be driveable but still..

There’s nothing in the episode that implies she jumped the future, all indications are that she was left there

Despite not being mentioned, it could still be a possibility: Nothing to say the Discovery didn’t jump into the future (slightly beyond the TOS, or even Picard series era Trek) and then wait a very long time for the crew to return (ie: both could be applicable).

Also - can we be certain that the Zora AI is a reliable narrator? Perhaps, but then again by her own admission, she had been out there waiting a very long time...

The reason I suggest it is so that it can be explained why Burnham, Sporedrive and crew could exist outside of TOS (and their ramifications having no bearing on TOS, TNG, etc - if we are to believe this is the prime timeline the Discovery series inhabits).

The writers could certainly treat this Short as such a backdoor, as they appear to be committed to eventually showing the mushroom engine out of a backdoor of some sort. I doubt they have anything specific worked out yet, but this Short is the opposite of specific, nicely enough.

Sort of like the Temporal Cold War, which could have been used for "explaining away" just about anything (but never was). Also, sort of like Worf's "we don't discuss it with outsiders" lampshading that eventually spawned a story and a continuity twist.

I don't think it was meant to be a back door pilot or anything like that.

It demonstrates the great experiment that is the Federation and Starfleet has a finite shelf life and therefore isn't the perfect ideal it claims to be. Humanity has retreated back into its hole, and the sense of wonder and curiosity that drove it out into the unknown on a mission of discovery is now but an empty voice in the void.

It doesn't demonstrate that at all. It just demonstrates that some humans 1,000 years later live totally cut off from the Federation and the mainstream of human culture. Which is basically a Maquis-like situation over a longer period of time.

Had it moments. I think the end was a bit of a nod to the end of "The Cage".

Canon oddity: Discovery has holographic projectors on the bridge, yet a hundred years later, the EMH-equipped Voyager only has them in sickbay.

While Discovery's bridge is quite voluminous, apparently, there's not enough room for dance lessons.

Considering you saw Holographic Comms on the Bridge during the run of the show, yes, it does. Also equating a system that projects non-solid images in the 23rd century with devices that effectively 'project' a solid 'being' that can hold and use physical tools and interact directly with the real world is a bit of apples and oranges here. :)
