News DSC Season 2 Premiere Reviews

After dozens of time travel related episodes, I think the number of timelines in play with Trek make it ridiculously impossible to decide which one is the “real” one.
The real one is whatever one the writers/franchise owners say it is.

I think this is the best way to look at it. Or, in other words, they are all "real". All part of a vast multi-verse, which depends on how one looks at it all.

The real one is whatever one the writers/franchise owners say it is.

Which means none of it is really real in any meaningful sense as writers and owners change. At one point, "Pathways" was supposedly part of Janeway's backstory, then it wasn't when writers on the show changed.

In my mind, every instance of time travel in Trek creates an alternate timeline. Branch off enough, you change how things go on a major level. I have said (and was laughed off at the time) that NX-01 looked “more advanced” because of the events of FC. I figured this would continue and appeared to do so either the Kelvin films and perhaps even moreso with Disco. It is all (and I imagine Fred Archer’s brain imploding as I say this) canon. It is just changed because of how much the timeline has changed. The same big events happen, more or less, but they could look different. It gives them the opportunity to either tell new tales in a bigger sandbox or do a retelling or reboot.

Or, ya know, it’s a TV series made in the late 2010s as opposed to the 1960s. Regardless, it’s just an explanation in my head and doesn’t really effect my enjoyment of the show.

The designer of said ship never thought she looked more advanced than the Connie.
Doug Drexler was a big TOS fan though, so he may have been bias.

He might have been. And all of this is really in the eye of the beholder, isn’t it? It might have been his intent but we all see things in our own way.

Clearly CBS didn't think the TOS design looked advanced enough

Clearly.

What I don’t get is why to completely abandon the Klingon ship design lineage. I think I see a D-7ish ship appearing in one of the trailers so that’s cool. But still... a little strange.

Again, doesn’t change the enjoyment, just was a head scratcher. I suppose it could be the “house” thing.

Because Bryan Fuller wanted to make the Klingons to be more alien.

It really doesn't. The show doesn't look or feel anything like the universe as it was originally envisioned, then there's the idea that no one from the original is even involved.

There comes a point where you've changed so much, it is no longer really related to the original.

Doesn't mean Discovery can't tell good stories though.

And.... you've just proven my point.

Every single thing you just said is completely contrary to fact.

Are TOS and TMP Klingons from a different timeline?

Yes. No. Maybe?

It is more that just the xenomorph Klingons, it is the technology, it is the way they act. In TMP, they gave us a new look for the Klingons but attached them to very obvious Klingon ships.

I don't think a more alien version of Klingons is necessarily a bad idea. I think a more alien version of Klingons in a universe where they've been pretty well fleshed out was poorly thought out.
