Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

You know, when it comes to accuracy, I work with the idea in my head that someone on these boards will call me out for mistakes, when it's really just my own brain (with a few exceptions ;)) pushing myself to be as accurate as possible
Hi Donny
I was wondering if you cold help me with a couple of things for my project, if you would be willing would it be ok to e-mail you?

Thanks
Ian

Sure, either email me at DVersiga84@gmail.com or send me a private message on these boards. Also, feel free to email me directly next time you have a question. Thanks!

More work in-progress with the bridge, in it's TWOK configuration. I spent the weekend completely reworking my models for the bridge stations, as there were many inaccuracies, and the models were fairly low-res. For instance, the elliptical monitors weren't actually modeled in my previous iteration (they were just flat textures simulating geometry but the illusion was broken up-close). I've also added the arc to the monitor hoods, which was also absent from my previous version. Also note the lights in the greebles up above, which I have activated for these WIP shots, even those lights didn't appear until TSFS.

Also, I should note that I have variables built into the bridge modules so that I can change things on the fly like color scheme (to depict another bridge, say the Reliant) and elliptical monitor style (flat for TMP, recessed for TWOK forward). I'm trying to knock out all the bridges of this type seen on screen in one go.

Another note, I've also modeled the TMP-specific conn platform, which was shaped slightly different than the one featured in TWOK onward, and also had additional mesh platforms to the side. Screenshots of all that will come later ;)

^^^The overhead lights are activated above Spock's station in a few shots in TMP.
You are correct! Notably the scene where Chekov gets electrocuted by V'ger. In those shots, you can actually see the bulbs hanging down from the greeble.

Those are just about the most senseless greebling in TMP. OK, the Transporter palate is the most senseless. But these are close.

OTOH, I never really noticed them until there was a closeup during the Kobayashi Maru in TWOK.

And super-dangerous. You could seriously break your ankle down in those things if you weren't watching where you were walking on the narrow pathway in front of the main chamber. I'm assuming it was incomplete flooring that they couldn't get done in time before launching towards V'Ger (Tuesday).

I see the bridge greebles sort of analogous to the lighting/air vent array above each passenger seat in an modern-day airliner. Not only do they perhaps provide lighting and air set to the comfort of the person at each bridge station, I also assume they may be removable and contain drop-down emergency supplies as well, in event of catastrophic life support failure.

Mr. Scott's Guide explains that the machinery is exposed for easy access during repairs. Just one step easier than removing a panel, it seems. IIRC, they were added to the design to convey a sense that the transporter room was a super-intricate piece of machinery.

[EDIT] Harold Michaelson in Starlog #30 (January 1980): "We changed the transporter room completely. Now it looks unlike any other room aboard the Enterprise. It's as if you are inside machinery."

...aaaaand here's the thread I was seeking!

I personally love the GNDNs in TMP, even if they are ultimately useless or even dangerous. They just look cool to me.

I know that there were a couple of lights above the science station in TMP, but I've been told that they were specific to that station on that bridge (of course, we could be talking practical budgetary reasons for the lights only being above that station in TMP), but I was really happy to see them lit in TSFS.

Besides, does everything NEED to be functional? Can't we have some form for the sake of form?

The open machinery on the transporter room floor IS plain dangerous (ahem...what if a medical team needs to rush in?), but again, it sure looks interesting.

Let's see what the first draft script says about the transporter. Ah, here we are:

Completely like any other station on the Enterprise, the Transporter Room is heavily shielded with thick metal, almost filled by a huge, ungainly looking device which could be an artist’s nightmare conception of a futuristic x-ray machine. It hovers over a glassed-in HEXAGON.......Several TECHNICIANS wearing helmeted and heavily shielded garments wait at the controls in the b.g.

Ok, I lie. That's not from TMP. It's actually from GR's first draft of "The Cage" (seriously). Sound familiar? :)

It does sound familiar.

Fascinating! What is that panel from? It's so totally different from the actual sets, but the uniforms are similar and it even looks like Shatner and Nimoy (and Rand?).

Star Trek #1 “K-G: Planet of Death!” Featuring a genocidal Spock. It is, erm, fascinating.

The artist, who worked only the first two issues, had a good hand for likenesses. His vision of Treknology was, in my opinion, a delightful hybrid of publicity photos and pure imagination.
Link.

Got it. Thought it might be a Gold Key, but even with those...to get the look and dialogue sooooo wrong...

I rather like those side emitters if for no other reason than most Trek transporters follow a certain pattern. (Maybe a case of getting bored with the "familiar".) Would make for a slick alien approach.

Oh, that is too funny! No, not the design itself. That actually has an eclectic elegance to it. No, the humor comes from the "nod and a wink" by Byrne, referencing something only the more hardcore geeks like us would "get". The person reviewing the comic noted the backswept ears for Spock, something I likely would have missed upon the first few viewings.

Well done, Bryne! Well done!

I think that's not glass, but the "beams from above" but it's a cool image, and Spock needs a lead apron.

I think it's meant to be an enclosed chamber of glass. It's more clearly resembles an enclosure in later issues with the edges not straight line "beams".
