The Bio on the left of the thumbnail there seems to have been copied and edited to make sense for the time period, from part of his Memory-Alpha page

If he was the captain and lead of this show from Season One onwards, we'd be looking at a more positive narrative for this show. Less divisive.

You can tell he brings authority, charisma and levity to the role. I wish it came earlier on this series, than now when it seems like a face-saving measure.

It's been a long time since we've had a cool captain on Star Trek television. Perhaps about 2 decades. Looking forward.

So... Pike's service record is an open book to those who can squint. Looks like three starships listed before "Captain Robert April", then a fourth line beginning with USS. What's with that? He studied everything and got more or less straight A's. And then there's the small print, apparently not copied verbatim from Memory Alpha.

What else? The mission does appear to have galactic scale, judging by the graphics chosen for the Ready Room. And then the tugs. So, Pike needs the Spore Ship and not just any starship, since plenty of the latter were able to reach the spot before the heroes warp out...

And I love it that Pike is a guest star in his own show. Hopefully gone for S3, replaced by somebody else again. Wouldn't have missed Lorca for anything.

Like I said it was edited, but still derived from it. It starts the exact same way except with the tenses edited to be present, instead of past.

"Christopher Pike is (was) a ____ century Human"

The ships on the right appear to be

    USS Antares
    USS Chatelet
    USS Aryabhatta

Or maybe, IDK - since "The cage" and other Pike Novel material is readable by those who write the show, they did a similar litany of 'past' and current accomplishments.

    <Pike> "... oOo-ow.." ...

    <Pike> .... <big smile> "... Kidding..."

    ... ... <Tilly> " OH my God, I thought I broke a Captain"

Again, the Discovery's shuttle bay is open, all the time. This is a second before it jumps to warp.

The VFX team just completely forgot to close the door in all these shots?

    Observations:
    • Pike had asthma as a child.
    • He appears to have failed astrophysics but received an A in Advanced Navigation and an A- in Advanced Tactical.
    • He appears to have taken medical leave.
    The dossier reads:

"Christopher Pike is a 23rd Century human Federation Starfleet officer. He is the current captain of the Starship USS Enterprise (2250-present), and is the successor of previous captain Robert April."

Which, as noted above, is effectively taken from Memory Alpha. While I'm glad they haven't spelled anything wrong yet this time, the writing teacher in me would like to note that this is plagiarism under the site's terms unless they've gotten some kind of special permission to use it.

    Edited: formatting.

Oh, this is good. There's quite a bit of history here. How rare is it that we get a dossier on screen that can actually be read by viewers without pausing and zooming way in?

Edit: Antares, being the ship that Charlie was on before his time on the Enterprise. Are the other two new ships?

Why would his bio contain his medical history? Also the top right of the wide shot says 'Classified'.

The graphic artists for Star Trek Into Darkness did the same thing, an info box for Qo'nos was lifted right from the Star Trek Online wiki.

Interesting to note the differences in the portrayals between Mount and Hunter.

Hunter played Pike as far more stern and strict, very similar to Lorca.

Mount played Pike more similar to Greenwood in JJTrek. A lot more relaxed and laid back.

I hope Pike's newfound zen is actually addressed onscreen as character development.

I know...still drives me crazy because that I spend literally weeks teaching students not to do this kind of thing, haha.

I don't personally see an issue with the difference between Hunter and Mount's portrayal of the character, and The Cage itself provides some explanations for Pike's behavior and attitude, but it would be nice to hear about his life and experience since. Particularly if they're developing the relationship between Pike and Number One (does she officially have a name yet?), I can see that being a gateway for the audience to find out how he's evolved as a commander. Imagine him confiding nervousness to her about captaining Discovery, and Number One reassuring him that he's got this after everything they've been through and how far he's come.

I'm fine with it as well.

As you indicate, in the first act of The Cage we are given reasons why Pike is not feeling like himself, and reasons for him to be in not his normal mood or be acting with his normal demeanor. He does loosen up at the end, after the events of the episode.

I should also add that we have not yet seen enough of Mount's Pike (and nothing contextual) to know exactly how this Pike acts.

I would guess that the folks at Memory, are probably ECSTATIC at this point and might possibly NOT be thinking about suing CBS.

Remember though - this Discovery incident is around 4 years AFTER the incident's depicted in TOS - "The Cage", so it's possible his Command style has evolved since then. :)
