What is Star Trek Discovery's rewatchability?

Re-watching is definitely better when you know what episodes to skip. I'll end up in a situation where I'll be like "I feel like watching this one!" or "I feel like watching that one!" and I'll watch it, and maybe a few, then I'm all set. So there's no realistic way I'd personally sit through 700+ episodes.

I'm about to re-watch late-DS9 soon-ish. I say that and it'll probably end up being months from now.

 

In my heart of hearts, anything made from STAR WARS on is a "modern" movie, as opposed to "classics" like THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL or A NIGHT AT THE OPERA. Even though I know intellectually that movies from the seventies and eighties are much older now than THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON or FORBIDDEN PLANET were when I was growing up.

 

I've watched it three times so far. Once alone, then with my son and finally with my parents. I've really enjoyed it each time and found new stuff to appreciate each time.

I'll probably binge watch the season again just before the second season premieres so that I am primed for its return. Same thing that I try to do with GoT and other serial shows I'm a fan of.

 

It was a big thing on trekmovie to be sure, to the point I was starting to feel like I was not only 1 of 10 people that liked Nemesis, but one of only 10 people that liked Voyager and Enterprise.

I think in general each version of Star Trek served the audience of it's time. As people got more into serialized storytelling, Star Trek got more serialized. So I think it's probably prudent to look at each series as a product of it's time. When TNG came out episodic TV was more popular so that's what it was.

For me, I love variety. I've watched everything Star Trek up to Enterprise multiple times. It doesn't bother me personally that the original series and TNG was episodic, and Enterprise and Discovery are more serialized. I do admit I do like some continuity in production values. I'm ok with updating special effects--in fact I love the remastered episodes of the original series--so it's not that. It's more that I like to see certain parameters retained in later series. Discovery pretty much threw all that out the window and it looks more like it belongs in the 25th century then 23rd based on previous shows. Some people obviously love that. I have a bit more difficulty with that. If it's a good show otherwise, I can move past that. But yeah, I'm a bit more old school in the sense that I like a certain continuity from series to series (not to say I expect it to look like the original series---but when they do things like intra-ship beaming when it was clearly noted in the original series it was incredibly dangerous to do that does bug me a little bit, and makes me think maybe people in the 23rd century are a tad lazy, I mean couldn't they just walk to engineering? ).

 

Watching once is enough for me, maybe after some years have passed I could go back through it again but that's unlikely to be honest.

The season was alright but it's no match for some of the other shows I watch as it felt too cobbled together.

 

I lurked on the TrekMovie forum very sporadically in the late-2000s. No, I'm not the "Lord Garth" from other there. Someone from over there asked me about that here once. And, yeah, I'd never say "I bet 20,000 quatloos!" But anyway, they were a very good source of information for the Abrams Films.

Though I'm not too familiar with their board, I think it was probably a case of one opinion becoming dominant over there and, through fighting, they drove other opinions out, because people with other opinions would've become frustrated and left. Darwinism. That's often the way it turns out anywhere, unfortunately. It's maddening beyond belief to see good posters, who could've contributed a lot, driven away by the antics of people who are basically the equivalent of school bullies.

 

Yeah. After thinking about it I took a peak last night at the sight. It's more a newsbreaking website but I didn't really see anything that I haven't seen posted elsewhere. And of course there's about 457 websites out there devoted to Star Trek and you can't possibly see all of them. For me it was more apathy towards it. Once I found this site I sort of made it my go to site for rumors and news, as most things seem to be posted or discussed here anyway.

I was always more than happy to engage in a debate/argument on trekmovie back in the day, but it sort of got tiresome. I realized I was starting to post the same arguments over and over again to the same people and I just started losing interest. I can be guilty of pressing my point and sometimes restating things but I always try to keep in mind they are my opinions and not everyone feels the same way, and that's ok. It is after all, entertainment.

 

I used to post under different username on Trekmovie and StarTrek.com, but after they eliminated the forums there, there was nowhere left for me to go, so I ended up here.

 

You can still make comments on trekmovie articles. And I saw a lot of the same names I was familiar with several years ago when I used to frequent it. I went by the same name over there as well. But it's probably been 2 or 3 years since I last posted any comments there (last night was the first time I visited the site probably in close to a year). They had also changed the format a few years back and I find it to be a bit confusing--esp. when you have 42 responses to one comment and you can't tell what it's referring to anymore. I prefer this format where it just adds to the end and you can quote previous posts if you want.

 

BTW, just curious, what does the bbs in trekbbs stand for anyway. I'll probably feel like a dope when I hear because it's probably something obvious. I'm assuming it doesn't stand for the actual BBS (as in British Broadcasting Service).

BBS is a holdover from the old pre-internet modem based BBSs (Bulletin Board System). I used to run one in Oklahoma using RemoteAccess BBS software that used ANSI graphics that I made with TheDraw. Ah, the good old days.

How long has Trek BBS been around. I see some administrators joining date as far back as 2000 (though I guess it's possible there were earlier ones that aren't around anymore). When did Trek BBS actually start?

1999. The board opened up in March or April, and I joined that August. TrekBBS was being promoted to other boards, including one I was posting on at the time. By the beginning of 2001, this was pretty much the only Star Trek board I was posting on, and I became a mod at the beginning of 2002.

I left in 2010. I hadn't posted much after 2007, and stepped down as a mod in early-2008. I was pruned at some point after that, so I re-registered later on. That's why I have the 2011 join date. I barely posted again until a year ago. Discovery is what brought me back.

 

Ok I looked it up. If I read it correctly 1999 appears to be the start-up date.

I didn't realize Trek BBS was one of the organizations devoted to trying to save Enterprise back in the day. I heard about the effort but not who was behind it. I didn't find Trek BBS actually until I was looking for info as to why their were no novels for 2018 (that was when I joined in 2017). Not sure how I missed it all those years but that was my first encounter here.

 

When I was in High School I ran a dial-up BBS, 92-95ish. I used RoboBBS which was at that time the only bbs platform that was a GUI interface and not just ANSI text. I had a color scanner and video digitizer and basically just shared Trek related media...back when sharing screencaps and video clips of the shows/movies wouldn't get you a C&D. lol. We were called GifTrek.

 

I recorded each episode of Season 1 as I watched it, then kept them around till I bought the blu-ray, so I have rewatched each episode at least 3 times individually and have done a full beginning-to-end rewatch twice (once on PVR and the other on blu).

 

I’ve rewatched a few of the episodes. Some of them I will probably always skip. I actually liked Lorca and enjoy the early episodes of the season. It irritates me that they made him a Mirror Universe villain. I also watch selectively when it comes to other Star Trek series. There’s no real need for me to ever see Spock’s Brain or the series finale to Enterprise, otherwise known as The Abomination.

 

One of our local channels is doing daily reruns of All the previous Trek series. So in the last few months my DVR was very active and I managed to rewatch all 700+ episodes of Trek (rewatching Discovery on CBS AA).

It was a great experience. I found all the Trek shows very rewatchable, with Discovery being above average in that regard.
