USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

I'm really let down by this Enterprise, and I feel like a crazy person saying that, because after I saw the JJprise I thought "Ugh. They should have let John Eaves design it." I like the JJprise better than the Discoprise. The Kelvin 1701-A is my second favorite Constitution class after the Refit.

Same here. Although I always did like the JJPrise.

The JJPrise, at least, has a clear design direction and unity to it that's part of and supports the art design of the 2009 movie in general - there's an across-the-board reinterpretation of the 1960s aesthetic that goes on there. This has been done wholly successfully twice before for Star Trek, particularly with regard to the Enterprise itself but more generally for overall production design - for the movies in 1979 and TNG in 1987. Other artists working on follow-on productions to those two have elaborated and improvised within the guide rails laid out by Jefferies, Probert et al.

Are you saying that based on John's sketches, or the final product after the CG team got done making changes to them? If the latter, I'm not sure you can hold stuff like the bent nacelle struts against him...

I don't like his sketches and the VFX model changes make the design even worse. There is one sketch of the secondary hull John Eaves did that I loved, but the rest of the ship, I do not.

IIRC pixel’s problem with the DSC enterprise is that it looks too much like the TOS enterprise

Mainly I don't like the nacelles, they are broken up into sections instead of one continuous surface. I also find it ridiculous that they updated it to look modern, but left the most outdated part untouched...the deflector dish. It should have a more Shenzhou-like deflector. I also hate how squat the whole ship is with the shorter neck. Speaking of the neck, they made the secondary hull nice and flowing and rounded like the refit, but left the exceptionally boxy neck on top, the lines clash. I also think the TOS hull livery looks very outdated and they left that alone too.

They take the TOS Enterprise and turn it into a Frankenstein of the NX-01 and Refit. It really doesn't aesthetically fit in with the other DSC ships at all. Discovery has clearly thrown away the entire TOS aesthetic, so why be so beholden to the Enterprise TOS aesthetic in just that one instance? I wish they had thrown it out and done an Andrew Probert or Ryan Chruch level reimaginging, except you know...good looking.

Ah I forgot, that was something else the VFX team changed.

Eaves gave it a dual pronged deflector like every other ship in the show, but like with the pylons, the shows VFX team changed it.
You can see it in the image blow, on the concept art I posted last page, and also on the USS Defiant wireframe in the actual in the show.

They should have just stolen the JJPrise Pylons.. The Rest keep the same, well except the color, make that more classic. Move the dark band on the pylon closer to the front like the original TOS..

To me, both those images look like somebody as been enabling the Enterprise with Antimatter Cookies and Potato Chips for far too long.

FAT is not better.
:ack:

I don't think fat when seeing those. I am thinking steroids

Maybe some people like the After, but there was nothing wrong with the Before.

Eaves and his co-designer, I have forgotten his name, designed the DSC Enterprise so it could be refit into something that resembles the TOS version more closely.

For example, the original straight pylons Eaves designed, if you remove that outer small piece, the remainder of the pylon is the roughly same size and design (relatively speaking to the rest of the ship) as the original TOS pylons.

Some more art. As you can see the design isn't 100% his, he does get notes back from the production team on what to change. One of the early concepts below has a solid connection between the pylons and engineering hull, just like TOS, but he was asked to taper it out.

Also huh, Eaves worked on 'The Hunt for Red October'.
