Like all his films, it's also an absolute technical masterclass in FX and cinematography. The ship going down is still a stunning sequence that has barely dated from a technical standpoint. It's stuff like this that help make his movies so special.

They weren't really meant to be really allegorical to modern social issues, let alone directly so. Trying to make the film be that but with the villain black hat-wearing cartoony makes the movie seem at best silly and very smug, at worst self-defeating.

Star Wars was much more innovative in taking familiar story elements and making them feel fresh.

Avatar's message wasn't even necessarily clear, or at least convincing, yeah of course it was wrong to just steal another people's resources but it went overboard by making it even more wrong because the natural resources were also some mental-communication network which made it feel too fantasy rather than relateable to the real world.

Eh I do think Titanic (though not a GREAT movie) has been pretty often imitated and not surpassed, that film was taking some somewhat familiar concepts but making them fresh (certainly not making you outright think Hey I Saw This Before) and pretty effective.

Looks like things have really moved on with these films. I'm eager to see what he's come up with for the next instalment. It's supposed to be underwater isn't it?

Yeah, it's supposed to focus on life in Pandora's oceans.
Didn't Titanic do really well when it was rerelased in 3D a few years ago?

I wonder if Sigourney Weaver is going to be in the next Avatar after all she was in all the Aliens. I know her character is dead but death is a relative term in Sci. Fi. plus she was dead in Alien III which didn't prevent her from being in the fourth one.

She is in it in an unconfirmed role, along with Steven lang, who's character also died in the original. I assume they will be returning as avatars of some kind.

Will he return as Colonel Miles Quaritch?

Apparently yes, and cameron has confirmed that he will be the main antagonist in these new movies.

They'd be crazy to let him get away. He's the anti-Biff Tannen. :D

I thought he was a great, kick ass character. I loved the bit when he runs outside without his mask firing relentlessly at the escaping craft.

Biff Tannen was the perfect villain for BTTF.

He was the perfect heavy for the first BTTF movie. He could not sustain the weighty demands of real villainy for a trilogy.

I don't know. I think the trilogy is perfect as it is.

Oh I don't know about that. I thought his turns as alternate timeline donald trump biff, old biff and mad dog in the third film were great and in keeping with the trilogy, in jokes and all.

I digress though. I'm looking forward to the return of lang in the avatar sequels. As his character is dead I envisage that his personality had already been downloaded to the humans computers for use in the avatar programme somehow. I can see his part being like agent Smith in the matrix sequels. Bring it on.

Nah, the second one is pretty weak. And a lot of that is Tannen.

I thought the second one was a stroke of genius after the classic original.

The second one employed some clever gimmicks, resulting in a few memorable moments - like the final scene, which is the best. But "genius" as a narrative movie? Far from it.
