James Cameron's Avatar Sequels Possible Titles Revealed

Pretty much because as far as it goes, it's a movie based on historical events and not the first movie to feature those events. Sure, he created some characters like Rose and Jack to add a romantic flair to it, but the core of it is what makes it timeless. I think its success is a testament to the harrowing events those people went through and the fact that it's just a fascinating story, period.

Like all his films, it's also an absolute technical masterclass in FX and cinematography. The ship going down is still a stunning sequence that has barely dated from a technical standpoint. It's stuff like this that help make his movies so special.

Just to bring Star Wars back into the discussion again briefly: was Palpatine a particularly deep and nuanced villain in RotJ? Were Vader and Tarkin in ANH? No, of course not. They were just evil people, doing evil things because: evil!

They weren't really meant to be really allegorical to modern social issues, let alone directly so. Trying to make the film be that but with the villain black hat-wearing cartoony makes the movie seem at best silly and very smug, at worst self-defeating.

I've always found it odd when people point out Avatar's straight-forward, no nonsense plot with a simple and easy to understand message as a negative.

I mean, it's a huge, bombastic adventure movie. You need the plot of a movie like that to be simple, or it's just a mess. Anyone here see a little independent sci-fi adventure move by the name of 'Star Wars'? Don't hear many complaints about that movie not having a terribly complicated plot, do ya?

Star Wars was much more innovative in taking familiar story elements and making them feel fresh.

Avatar's message wasn't even necessarily clear, or at least convincing, yeah of course it was wrong to just steal another people's resources but it went overboard by making it even more wrong because the natural resources were also some mental-communication network which made it feel too fantasy rather than relateable to the real world.

Fixed. ;)

Cameron's more a flash-in-the-pan type. He creates things that do well for a moment but don't stand the test of time (Titanic, Avatar) in terms of quality.

Eh I do think Titanic (though not a GREAT movie) has been pretty often imitated and not surpassed, that film was taking some somewhat familiar concepts but making them fresh (certainly not making you outright think Hey I Saw This Before) and pretty effective.

James Cameron: The ‘Avatar’ Sequels Have Wrapped Production

This just in from Pandora: James Cameron says the Avatar sequels have reached a major milestone with the completion of all principal photography involving main cast members.

In a video message, the director of the two highest-grossing films of all time (Avatar and Titanic) praised the ensemble of actors who have been filming Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 since September 2017.

“Hi, James Cameron here and today I’m coming to you from the set of the Avatar sequels — and behind me you can see our performance-capture stage. Today we’re capturing some stunt scenes filming some stunt scenes but our principal cast are all wrapped: Sam [Worthington], Zoe [Saldana], Sigourney [Weaver], Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet.”

Looks like things have really moved on with these films. I'm eager to see what he's come up with for the next instalment. It's supposed to be underwater isn't it?

Yeah, it's supposed to focus on life in Pandora's oceans.
I think the opposite. I wouldn't say titanic and avatar haven't stood the test of time. Titanic holds up incredibly well for a 21 year old film and like it or not, is seen as a classic movie now. Avatar, in the main looks like it could be released today and people wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Even the likes of aliens, the abyss and T2 all look streets ahead of their contemporaries in terns of visuals and cinematography. The only reason the first terminator film doesn't is because of it's limited budget.

I think James Cameron is in a league of his own.
Didn't Titanic do really well when it was rerelased in 3D a few years ago?

I wonder if Sigourney Weaver is going to be in the next Avatar after all she was in all the Aliens. I know her character is dead but death is a relative term in Sci. Fi. plus she was dead in Alien III which didn't prevent her from being in the fourth one.

She is in it in an unconfirmed role, along with Steven lang, who's character also died in the original. I assume they will be returning as avatars of some kind.

I thought he was a great, kick ass character. I loved the bit when he runs outside without his mask firing relentlessly at the escaping craft.

He was the perfect heavy for the first BTTF movie. He could not sustain the weighty demands of real villainy for a trilogy.

Oh I don't know about that. I thought his turns as alternate timeline donald trump biff, old biff and mad dog in the third film were great and in keeping with the trilogy, in jokes and all.

I digress though. I'm looking forward to the return of lang in the avatar sequels. As his character is dead I envisage that his personality had already been downloaded to the humans computers for use in the avatar programme somehow. I can see his part being like agent Smith in the matrix sequels. Bring it on.

The second one employed some clever gimmicks, resulting in a few memorable moments - like the final scene, which is the best. But "genius" as a narrative movie? Far from it.
