I think people would get Q. A guy with godlike powers trolls the crew...

I agree. There's nothing terribly complicated about Q as a concept. You just need to establish that he has a history with Picard and the crew. (Something WRATH OF KHAN accomplished in one scene with Chekov and Terrell.)

And I think general audiences are way more accepting of "weird" stuff than people often assume. I remember folks predicting that THOR and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and DOCTOR STRANGE were going to fail because they were too weird or off-the-wall for "mainstream" viewers.

If audiences can cope with a talking space raccoon, a sentient tree, Asgardian space gods, and Infinity Stones, I think they can manage a mischievous god-like being messing with a starship crew. Hell, TOS did variations on that theme more a couple of times and that was fifty-plus years ago, when mainstream audiences hadn't grown up on the likes of STAR TREK, STAR WARS, HARRY POTTER, etc.

Granted the TNG movies are history, so this ship has sailed. Just always struck me as odd that the movies ignored Q.

at this point, they might actually be bored with how mundane the Q are compared to space raccoons and talking trees. visually and conceptually speaking anyway.

Compared to Ego the Living Planet or something, absolutely.

Honestly, Q stepped right out BEWITCHED or I DREAM OF JEANNIE. Even the most "mainstream" viewer would get the idea right away. :)

I actually think that was the right choice. Khan's history with Kirk was simplified for the movie: He was driven by revenge. The Q relationship with Picard is highly complex. Not necessarily Q being a space god - but his character, and that with his power set, he can't be a straight antagonist, and for everything else, there would be too much backstory baggage to ever got all the nuances across on the big screen for new and casual audiences.

Now granted, what we ended up with wasn't that great either most of the time - but I think in concept it was a smarter choice to introduce simpler (Borg, Klingons) or new antagonists (Picards' evil clone! plastic surgery enthusiasts!). They just didn't get these to really "pop" either...

I thought the cast did a fine job but I kind of loathed the JJ-verse. Beyond was the best of the bunch. I liked that.

It is not that they were awful, but too lazy, too derivative, too slapstick, to action over brains for me.

Take Trek away from JJ (he does not get it) & give it to someone else. If Tarantino can close/erase the Kelvinverse altogether with a Yesterday's Enterprise/City on the Edge of Forever movie, that would be fantastic.

While that would be very cool and very welcome..unfortunately it would negate any TMP/WOK reunion movie they might want to do in 10 years or so featuring maroons wearing 'TJ curly' Pine, reluctant Quinto, grizzled Urban, overweight Pegg, afrohair Zoe, hottie Saavik, vs a pecs pumped up Cumberbatch

I wouldn't be so sure. We live in an era of film franchises ignoring sequels over and over (Halloween, Terminator). They could reboot Trek twice then go back to Pine, Qunto, Saldana and friends for a rebooted Undiscovered Country.

hope QT is planning something like that for his movie.. somthing like an opening prologue of TOS cast VI era (via MCU/Rogue 1 CGI) like a lost mini Trek VII.. then tying into whatever interdimentonal/timetravel plot follows with the kelvin lot (City on Edge meets Yesterdays Ent :) )
