Bad Robot add 6 films to upcoming slate. None of which are Star Trek :(

I could mistaken: Surely, as far as IPs go, Trek was/is Paramount’s last, best hope?

If so, I find it astounding that they wouldn’t invest more into Trek...

 

Paramount's big IPs are Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Transformers, TMNT and G.I. Joe.

Trek and TMNT under performed in 2016.The last G.I. Joe was in 2013. Transformers under performed in 2017. Mission Impossible 5 (2015) and Mission Impossible 6 (2018) were both big successes for the studio. It's all on Tom Cruise's shoulders.

 

If they make Tom Cruise the next Kirk, I'm out.

 

^ Cruise would be great in scenes where Kirk is running through the ship.

 

Mission Impossible: Fallout was indeed a good blockbuster action movie!

Hang on - studios biggest name ..4th Trek..time travel .. this can only mean Cruise as present day UFO believing college professor encountering George Kirk (having been blasted back in time by the red matter) and then the JJ crew trying to get him back while fighting time travelling Klingons (who want GKirk as hes like the key to resetting the kelvinverse or something)

 

There were folks who believed that Enterprise's failure would "teach Paramount a lesson," and lead to the potential return of oldTrek.

This was a stupid expectation. It was explained at that time, by people who were not naive, why this would not happen. That Trek would mutate further away from earlier versions was entirely foreseeable.

The same expectation now would be just as dumb, and the same will be true this time.

 

If anything would drive Paramount to return to "oldTrek" it would be the under performance of the "newTrek."

 

But a return to 'old trek' would still result in a show/movie that looked and felt different anyway. Hell discovery is supposed to be in the prime timeline yet feels like a kelvin production, aesthetically at least.

But this is TOS. So perhaps Cruise should be Trelane.

 

Better still, Chris Hemsworth as James T. Kirk.

And no Q (and no unemployed Empresses either).

 

I'm still amazed that TNG movies never brought back Q given how popular the character is.

Perhaps, but he's certainly popular with a great many fans. My Q novels are still far and away my bestselling Trek books, as mathematically proven by my royalty statements year after year.

 

Same here. Especially given how Q bookends TNG as a series.

 

Q had already been used to such good effect in All Good Things, which would have been hard to top in the movies. It sure wouldn't have made sense to use him in Generations so soon after AGT. Using him for a final TNG film around the time of Nemesis might have worked, but again, would have been hard to top AGT.

 

If that's the argument then I would have gone with no TNG films. Because, AGT was far, far, better than any of them.

 

I think "Q" as a character and concept is simply waay to weird for mainstream audiences. Fans may love him - but a movie has to sell to a wider audience. And they expect science fiction stuff. Something like the Borg is easier to grasp. Romulans? THose are the guys that look like Spock, only evil, right? But Q, especially with his personal history to Picard, would be IMO simply too much to ask newcomers for.

 

I never liked the concept of the character at all. I always thought it was just way too far and over the top and just totally not believable. De lancie was good in the role though, and AGT was excellent.
