Only two STAR TREK Movies of the thirteen produced movies had no humanoid villain...

Ah. Yeah, that totally makes sense.

I went with TMP, because I enjoy that film better than TVH. TVH has parts that I really enjoy too.

 

It surprises me how often the "you marooned us..." answer gets accepted as fact. Kirk himself never openly denies it, but Khan is clearly someone talking from the skewed perspective of having been stuck on a rock desperate to survive and watching his loved ones die around him... one can, if one likes, blame Kirk for not 'checking in' with the Botany Bay survivors, but the end of "Space Seed" actually plays quite differently... optimistically... Kirk sends them to Ceti Alpha partly as punishment but partly, like the original Botany Bay in Australia, as an experiment... to see if they can survive in such harsh conditions, and what society could develop from them. Kirk almost puts him there because he can't think of a punishment suitable for a superman, so the best he can do is to give him a prison but also all the tools needed to survive in it. He certainly never maroons Khan there.

 

I prefer TMP, as I'm not big on comedy.

Only in so much as man was the villain that sent the Voyager 6 probe out there to "learn all that is learnable". Nobody knew either of those things would result in such catastrophe

 

On the other hand, THE VOYAGE HOME attracted the most viewers of all the TOS movies, which suggests that viewers don't demand a villain to fight if the movie is fun and entertaining enough.

And, yeah, gotta go with the whale movie over TMP. It's a feel-good movie that always leaves me smiling. I respect TMP's ambition, but honestly I have no burning to watch it again anytime soon. Once every fifteen years or so is good for me.

 

Yes, because we already had two villain/antagonist films, then a straight rescue our friend film. TVH was a break after all the chaos, with a little bit of peril/near-death thrown in at poor Chekov's expense. With shows, you get adventure and fun alternating every week or so for a quarter or half the year. With films, you have to wait years.

 

You're forgetting about Bob, the villain of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

 

For a second I thought you meant Admiral Bob, who sends the crew to Nimbus III in Star Trek 5

 

When you put it that way, then I would have to say V'Ger in process of elimination because the Probe was not a rival; it's only purpose was to communicate. The movie, The Voyage Home, made me wonder how connected we all are with nature, space, and the universe. Eliminating one could destroy us all.
