DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

I think we took the DC thread past infinity and beyond into conceptual space

Don't think of the universe as a banana

Just read that Aquaman current projections are for an opening weekend between $40-$60 million based off early interest, a new low for DCEU or DC Worlds (whatever they call it). I'm sure this will go up somewhat but a $160 million rumoured budget is going to need oversea's numbers or great WoM to help it out if it opens so low.

This movie is going to do well or crash based on actual word of mouth I think. If it is good, it will do well. DC doesn't have the track record of solid, entertaining movies with wide appeal like Marvel does at this point. I, for one, really enjoyed Man of Steel and BvS, despite their faults. Wonder Woman was really good, and Suicide Squad was okay. Justice League was the weakest of the bunch. Wonder Woman and the Justice League were the only two I felt comfortable watching with my kids though, and that may be a big factor. Most Marvel movies are family friendly for people with tweens--the DC movies aren't.

Aquaman has the potential to be a big hit--but only if it is good. People feel that they have been burned a few times and just aren't going to throw their money down in advance.

I can't say I'm surprised. I think this movie could have opened higher, in that Momoa looks awesome in the part and the concept is very different compared to the average superhero flick which should be a good thing.

But the trailers have really gone out of their way to make the whole thing feel like a totally standard hero flick that just happens to be underwater rather than above it. And Momoa's performance in JL was not inspired, either. For anyone who isn't already a huge WoDC fan, I don't see what's been put out there to really draw them in to this movie at all.

Well, I haven't liked any of the films in this continuity except WW and JL, but the latest Aquaman trailer did capture my interest with the impressive rooftop chase sequence. I'm at least curious about it, despite never liking Momoa much (though he was much better in JL than he was in Stargate Atlantis, because in the interim he seems to have learned how to actually pronounce distinguishable vowels and consonants and express distinguishable emotions.)

By the bye, BvS is on tv and I’m watching it for the first time since the cinema (where I saw it twice). And while I’ve been critical of Snyder and the DCEU on many occasions, I’m still really enjoying it 3rd time out.

^ If you've only seen it at the theater and on TV, and you have any appreciation for the film at all (as you've just indicated you do), you owe it to yourself to see the Ultimate Edition that was released on Blu-ray. I have serious reservations about BvS, but there's no question the extended cut -- which, by all indications, is the "real" cut before studio concerns about runtime and such came into play -- is by far the superior version.

I know, I really have been intending to see it ever since it was announced but sadly real life gets in the way! Still haven’t caught The Last Jedi or Infinity War on blu-ray. I’ve a sci-fi-apathetic wife, which means I’ve only limited time to see all these things!

Great news, I'm a big fan.

That's a shame, I hope it turns out better than that. The trailers look great, and the WoDC movies have been getting better and better so there is a lot of potential for this to be really good.

I really need to see the Ultimate Edition, I enjoyed the theatrical version, and I keep hearing about how the UE is even better.

Hmmm, that is tempting.
The best thing about the longer cut is that it does a nice job of piecing together the story, so Lex's plan makes a lot more sense (but is still convoluted) and Lois Lane actually gets to be a reporter. This movie would have been better as a two movies, with the first part as BvS and the second Superman: Doomsday.

As does Clark Kent. The longer cut would not have been universally acclaimed, of course, but would have been better received had it been released at the cinema.

Yep to the two posts above. Lois's and Clark's expanded journalistic roles are a definite plus. In fact, more of Adams's excellent Lois doing anything is welcome in my book -- I vote for a Lois Lane solo movie in semi-grounded investigative/political thriller mode, with Cavill playing an important but clearly supporting secondary role (he and Adams do have strong and sexy chemistry).

That would a great idea, I would watch that movie in the cinema.
I love Amy Adams as Lois Lane

Cavill is done as Superman. He has gone from a universally despised Superman to a universally despised Witcher.
