I agree :) I just think it speaks to the material of what Abrams presented that makes it a little bit more than a nostalgia cash grab.

This is true. :techman: Nimoy probably gets more to actually act in '09 than he had in most of his Trek movies. He seems genuinely enthusiastic about the material, too, which is more than I can say for his turn in, say, TNG's "Unification" two-parter, where his performance feels very distinctly half assed and phoned in...

The problem that Spock's role in Generations would've had was exactly as you identify, this notion that's baked into the script that the TOS characters are just glorified cameos (even Kirk, on some level). To truly tempt him, there needed to be some crossover to the main meat of the story, perhaps 24th century Spock recruiting the TNG crew to find Kirk because he's been studying the nexus and now believes it can be penetrated safely and that his old friend may still be alive. Something like that.

Oh yeah. It was a nostalgia cash grab. But in the best of ways. In that it really managed to capture the tone and fun of the original, and translate it to a modern production. I'm not a fan of the destruction of Vulcan, and the alternate-timeline shennanigans in retrospect hurt the movies more than it did it favours back in the day. But that doesn't translate to the experience of watching the movie - that's still a darn good time!

In fact, I would actually say that Star Trek09 is actually the best movie J.J. Abrams ever made. Which would make sense, it really was his biggest make-or-break movie in Hollywood. Before that he only did television, and Mission:Impossible 3, which underperformed. This was arguibly the movie he put most of his creative energy during his entire career in. And it showed in the result.

(I would rank his movies as follows: ST09 > M:I:3 > Super 8 > Into Darkness > Force Awakens - but only the first two of all of them are really "good")

Would be cool if someday the Krall event is picked up in the prime timeline by a comic, novel or episode - or in Star Trek Online. Timing has to be right for Jaylah to survive.

Apart from the Altamid events itself, I’d love to see Earth’s warp-four Freedom-class starships some more.

I think it would be interesting if there was a premake/deboot style of Beyond, with Pike's Enterprise and crew from The Cage battling Krall and cohorts who have TOS-era style special effects and makeup, maybe like as concept art or something.
But I do think if the story was going to take place in the Prime timeline in a book or comic, for it to be interesting for a reader it would probably have happened with Pike's Enterprise, otherwise who cares if it's some random crew of the Lexington or Farragut.

The truth is: Krall will NEVER happen in the prime-timeline, the same way as V'Ger, the whale probe and the various Borg attacks are never going to happen in the Kelvin-timeline.

Simply one more reason why the timeline-split wasn't that great an idea to begin with...

You mean like Khan didn't happen?

They'll reuse whatever they think they can make money with. So... probably not V'Ger.

Well, V'Ger did appear in the KT comics. The thing is, with CBS putting the pedal to the metal on prime-timeline Trek on All-Access, I expect the tie-ins to become particularly focused on Discovery and the other new shows, so there won't be as much room for a wacky Beyond PT sidequel in the novels or comics. Even STO might be kept too busy to do something with it, and they'll pull story ideas from anywhere.
