Spoilers Season 2 Trailer

I used to think that, back in the day, JJ would screw up Trek. I still think that, but when discovery came around, I didn't like it a whole terrible lot. I rewatched a lot of the episodes and then this came out. I'm excited. I loved this trailer. It looks fantastic!! This is going to be amazing.

I bet the D7/K'tinga will be a new Klingon design, ignoring that they were in Enterprise a hundred years previously.

whoa! Just caught this! :D

It's been said numerous times, so let me chime in - trailer looks incredible!!!!

So much intrigue, and what sounded like Bear McCready BSG music also (not a bad thing, quite an awesome thing!).

:) Excited!!!!

Interestingly, no source outside of that episode has called it D7 since.

Everything since has called it 'Sech' which is Klingon for 'Torch'.

D7 I still think is the Starfleet name for it.

My thought about this is that D7 is the (Starfleet) name for the general type (based on warp emissions, shields, weapons etc) similar to how the Arliegh Burke-class and its international sister ships could be classed as 'Aegis-type' and that Sech, Klolode (an uprated D5 platform), K'Tinga, K't'agga et al are the names for specific hulls that follow this general trend.

For them to dump so much of the Klingon look means someone higher up wasn't happy with it,

They had more character to them. They didn’t look like they came from a generic sci fi property.
Neither do the Discovery ones. But, of course I'm also the guy who has never walked in to an Apple store that looked like the Kelvin universe bridge so what do I know?
Controversial opinion time. The DSC Klingons look bloody stupid with hair. Like those half assed fan photoshops.
That is controversial. At first I did think it was a photoshop, but I don't think it's stupid. I'll be curious to see it more in action. I'm at least glad for the variety.

You simply don't throw away millions of dollars in design work if everyone is happy with it. I know you're in the camp of "this show can do no wrong", but reality is reality. The Klingons of season one are getting dumped, which mean someone is unhappy with them.

But, they didn't. They added hair and thinned around the mouth. That doesn't sound like "getting dumped." That sounds like a refining of the process.

And no, it's not a "the show can do nothing wrong" idea. It's a "shows go through refinements of their craft" concept that's been around since TOS, if not longer.

The mullrat-look for klingons in season 1 was a dumb idea. And they even gave (behind the scenes - thus non-canon) explanation that klingons can't grow hair. That was stupid. Even though if in "real life" changes in hair is much less than biological changes - in a fictional setting the broader strokes count more. And in this regard, S1 ditched ALL the visual cues indicating "klingon" - the mongol beards, the shoulder belts, the D7, the brutalistic design language. That. Was. Dumb. Also, it probably wasn't so much the result of a deliberate design decision, but because the original intent was a semi-reboot, from which they now have walked back, and introduced all the "familiar" elements back.

Which was the rght decision.

Now, do the new klingons still have too much latex in their face, double nostrils, and especially those new, ,weird reptilian fingers? Yes. But hell, during the run of DS9, the klingons at one point had Bajoran noses, and their forehead had everything from single ridges (TMP) to what can't be describes as anything else but cancerous hill landscapes (TNG's clone of Khaless).

So yeah. The new klingon look is nothing more than another make-up upgrade - like when they gave forehead ridges to Romulans, or moved the Antenna of Andorians from the back to the forehead and made them moveable. That's okay. That's actually appreciated, and what they should do.

But even if the changes (hair, eyebrows, beard) look very minor, they are a huge shift in the overall approach of the portrayal. From a semi-reboot to an upgrade. And thus a right one. A completely, 100% justified choice, and a good one at that.
