Spoilers Season 2 Trailer

The mullrat-look for klingons in season 1 was a dumb idea. And they even gave (behind the scenes - thus non-canon) explanation that klingons can't grow hair. That was stupid. Even though if in "real life" changes in hair is much less than biological changes - in a fictional setting the broader strokes count more. And in this regard, S1 ditched ALL the visual cues indicating "klingon" - the mongol beards, the shoulder belts, the D7, the brutalistic design language. That. Was. Dumb. Also, it probably wasn't so much the result of a deliberate design decision, but because the original intent was a semi-reboot, from which they now have walked back, and introduced all the "familiar" elements back.

Which was the rght decision.

Now, do the new klingons still have too much latex in their face, double nostrils, and especially those new, ,weird reptilian fingers? Yes. But hell, during the run of DS9, the klingons at one point had Bajoran noses, and their forehead had everything from single ridges (TMP) to what can't be describes as anything else but cancerous hill landscapes (TNG's clone of Khaless).

So yeah. The new klingon look is nothing more than another make-up upgrade - like when they gave forehead ridges to Romulans, or moved the Antenna of Andorians from the back to the forehead and made them moveable. That's okay. That's actually appreciated, and what they should do.

But even if the changes (hair, eyebrows, beard) look very minor, they are a huge shift in the overall approach of the portrayal. From a semi-reboot to an upgrade. And thus a right one. A completely, 100% justified choice, and a good one at that.
While I don't agree on the "That Was Dumb" portion of this, or even if this was the "right" decision you do write this very well.

I assuming this guy is a Dahar Master

That last pic...
Makes me think of the Vulcan Katra Ritual, but Klingon style for some reason.
Perhaps Ash is going to get more of his "Voq" back in Season 2???

What if L'Rell just pulled Voq out of Ash and into herself when she supposedly "cured" him??
:wtf:

Hair
Klingons
Hairy Klingons
Harry Mudd
Mudd is the reason Klingons have hair
Heh...

I could see this particular version of Mudd, taking Klingon scalps as trophy's.
Maybe after meeting him they all decided to shave their heads!
:nyah::klingon::nyah:

I bet the D7/K'tinga will be a new Klingon design, ignoring that they were in Enterprise a hundred years previously.

Well, the best solution is then to pretend Enterprise got it wrong (or never happened). Either way, I'm happy to give the nod to Discovery here.

In terms of the trailer: AWESOME! Who cares if Kelvinverse Trek 4 never comes out. This is all the Trek we could ask for. Still teasing us with no Enterprise bridge, but the Spock reveal at the end was a surprise. He resembles Quinto more than Nimoy, but it still works.

Really enjoyed the trailer, looks fantastic. Lighter tone, exploration, good character bits, interesting mystery. Like it.

Controversial opinion time. The DSC Klingons look bloody stupid with hair. Like those half assed fan photoshops.

I watched the trailer again and the Klingons looked liked those Aliens from the Voyager 2 parter Basics, the inhabitants of the planet.

You simply don't throw away millions of dollars in design work if everyone is happy with it. I know you're in the camp of "this show can do no wrong", but reality is reality. The Klingons of season one are getting dumped, which mean someone is unhappy with them.

Gluing some wigs to the existing makeup isn't throwing away millions of dollars. Hell, it probably saves money overall, because they don't need the level of detail on the back of the head any longer.

I do wonder if they toned down the teeth a bit. Supposedly they really didn't work from an enunciation standpoint. Mary Chieffo needed to overdub 80% or more of her lines later. It's also pretty clear because Latif gave a much better performance as Voq when he was unencumbered by makeup later in Season 1.

I'd really prefer if they futzed with the skin tones of the Klingons a bit to make them look less corpse-like. Bruise purple and grey just don't look great IMHO. If you don't want them to look too human, you could mix more yellow into the skin tone or something.

Could this be Stamets and Culber?

No.

The hand on the left is connected to someone wearing a Starfleet uniform. The hand looks feminine (notice the long fingernails) and the skin tone is brown. It's Micheal's hand.

The hand on the right is white. Gender is harder to determine, could be male or female (though it looks older). Key issue is they are not wearing a Starfleet uniform. If I had to guess, Micheal is holding hands with a member of her family - Spock or Amanda most likely.

At the time even the ENT showrunners weren't happy with using it - and they consider it a mistake as they did it to save production time and get the episode finished (saving money too as it was a pre-existing 3D ship model.) They've said to 'fill it in' with one of the other Klingon ship models (that do look more primitive) that they made and used for later episodes.

Wow, that was a fantastic trailer. I love the whole tone and theme of the season exploring the intersection of faith and science, and I'm glad to see the "Red Angels" are apparently benevolent beings (unless that's a red herring) rather than villainous. Loved all the Pike and Spock and Number One stuff but I'm glad to see their addition is not taking much time away from our existing characters.

Don't know what was getting pulled out of Tilly and put in the containment chamber. Some kind of spore infection?

Hairy Klingon Darth Maul for the win.

Don't you remember that drop of Spore Stuff falling on Tilly's shoulder in the last season 1 episode?

It's got to have something to do with that.

Might even be Culber's Spirit.

Beings from "heaven" that cause Vulcans to go rogue, grow facial hair and feel like all their pain is gone.

Well, that does sound familiar.

It is interesting though - all the flack I took last year for continually suggesting the show was drenched in biblical metaphor and here we are.

I don't remember phoenix like, spiderleg winged Slenderladies in the Bible. I'm not reading the damned thing a fourth time.

It looks like fun, although when I saw the Klingons all I could think of was the dreadful photoshops we've seen here on TrekBBS:lol:

The classic D7 always looks nice, but it's maximum pandering and Spock is a hipster now.

Yup. Everyone's under 35 and most of them look like they're 20. My juvenile frycook jokes won't be going away for a while, sadly.

But the actual fact seems to still remain, the writers are doing little more than fanservice - taking old Trek scenes and stuff, a couple new bits after studying potential audiences to see what makes them squee and squeal the most, shoving it all into a blender, and pressing the "puree" button. STD has the better feel compared to TNG1, but TNG1 (which also did some fanservice) just didn't plop all over the place with lunacy. It got us into their universe (and didn't take the easy route of pandering nearly as much as it could, thank Gene Roddenberry for that as he didn't want TOS to be used as a crutch) and kept us there.

And, yeah, but the photoshops have more creativity. :p :D
