Hey, I never noticed that before....

What fleet of jetliners?

In The Making of Star Trek (TMOST), Roddenberry is hyping the size of the Enterprise, and he says the Hangar Deck could contain a whole fleet of today's jet liners. In essence, he was selling the show's exciting concepts and not doing the math.

Of course, that same magnificent book includes Matt Jefferies' technical drawings of the ship, complete with measurements.

The original series bible implied an Enterprise around twice as big as the "official" one, as we can see from this description of the saucer:
This is the portion of the shop in which we will be and which we will use most. It contains at the very top the ship's bridge and general operation facilities. This "saucer" is approximately twenty stories thick at its widest spot, containing also primary ship's departments, living accommodations, recreational facilities, laboratories, and is in fact a completely self-sustaining unit which can detach itself from the galaxy drive units and operate on atomic impulse power for short-range solar system exploration.
On a ship that large, there would at least be room for a "small" fleet of jets ;)

Is that available online? All I have is the April 17, 1967 Writer's Guide, which has the saucer down to 11 decks.

The extras in this "Amok Time" scene include the same Command Division woman who was on the bridge in the next episode filmed, "The Doomsday Machine." If it was the end of AT's shooting schedule and the beginning of DM's, the two scenes might have been shot on the same day, which would be a half-day for each one.

And I almost think the red dress woman in "Amok Time" is Elizabeth Rogers (Lt. Palmer), but her hair is a little different and there's no stripe on the sleeve.

My guess is they could not pay a background player for one day of work which would appear in two episodes. I rather doubt the unions would have allowed it, but it's hard to say without knowing the rules at the tine. I believe they had to pay extra when reusing stock of background players shot for other episodes, which is why you didn't see them frequently using pre-shot corridor stuff to make the show and crew feel bigger. But I could be incorrect.

I'd guess they just asked extras if they wanted to come back next week as well because it benefited them to have an illusion of a constant crew, plus it's easier than looking for new ones.

At that time Elizabeth Rogers had bangs, and the other actress's profile looks different. And she seems shorter, somehow. So you're right in assuming it probably isn't her.

She's shorter, and has a completely different figure, than Elizabeth Rogers. Not much resemblance at all, really.

I noticed it a long time ago, but it was easier to get in this thread which is still open (and valuable):

In Return of the Archons, when Sulu is beamed up, he throws a pair of pants down the steps and yells, "These are the clothes they wear, not these!" while pointing at his own outfit. The pants, and the clothes we see on the planet, are similar to late 19th/early 20th century American/European dress, while Sulu is in an outfit straight out of the American Revolution. Basically, he was absolutely correct!
