“Jean-Luc Picard is back”: will new Picard show eclipse Discovery?

That was over 20 years ago. And DSC isn't meant to be that kind of show. The market and delivery method are completely different.

You're comparing apples to rubick's cubes.

Yes, I am comparing apples to Rubik's Cubes, but, that's rather the point of this thread, isn't it?Will the new stuff eclipse the current? I like Michelle Yeoh, I really do. But, she doesn't have the star power, again, in the Anglosphere, that Patrick Stewart does.

I plan on seeing CRA as soon as the mother-in-law gets back from vacation and we have a sitter for our 6yo. Until anyone mentioned it, I had no idea Yeoh was in it. The marketing and publicity have all played up Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Henry Golding and Ken Jeong. Yeoh is by far the most accomplished actor in the movie, but in America they chose not to lead with her. That tells you a lot.

It goes the same for SMG (a truly talented actor). When was the last time you saw someone making a meme about anyone other than Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus or Jeffery Dean Morgan?

This isn't a knock on the other two, they're fine. But Stewart brings more to the table than they did.

]You don't remember her from that James Bond movie?
i remember the character, but untill i looked it up TVnot the actress who played her.
the idea that a person would create a war simply so he could cover it in the news sounds like something someone would do.
basically the spanish american war

I don't think so.

Per the title it's about discussing wether the new show will steal all of Discovery's spotlight, so it has something to do with DSC and thus fits into this forum.

Plus there isn't a "new Picard show" forum, yet.

I'm willing to bet the majority of Schmo's have no idea who Patrick Stewart is either. They might on a good day know "Captain Picard" or "That bald guy in X-Men"
Yeoh, OTOH is in a movie that was number one at the box office a couple of weeks back.

Patrick Stewart really isn't that famous. He's probably most recognized as being McKellen's bestie.

Most people don't necessary know his name. But everyone knows the guy.

Really, "Picard and Data" are probably the only other Trek characters almost as well known as "Kirk and Spock" (maaayybe Seven of Nine as well). You can show literally anyone a picture of him - even people that are absolutely not into genre television - and they will know him as "the Star Trek guy" or Prof. X.

That's also the reason why Picard meme-faces work so well - he simply has entered pop-culture. Like "Robin Hood" probably only very few people actually can tell you anything more than surface level details or even know the stories, the other characters and the lore. But show them a picture - and they will recognize.

Were you a Trek fan in the early 90s? TNG was "water cooler" material. Everyone knew Picard and Stewart. They even had his face on like slurpee cup type merchandise. You couldn't get away from it, even if you wanted to. STD just doesn't have that kind of penetration.

Hue hue hue hue.

Not even "genre fans" - at this point, there appears to be no attempt any more in marketing to reach beyond the committed trekkie fan base. CBS's focus with Trek is now pure niche programming.
Given the Trek burnout in mainstream audiences, that's probably a good thing. ST is going to live and die with its niche audience.

No.

The Clark Kent effect is really a thing.
And it's a fascinating thing. There was a great experiment at a hotel where they would switch the helper behind the desk after the person was distracted briefly and the change barely registered.

Facial recognition is not as good as we humans would like to pretend that it is.

Michelle Yeoh hasn't been relevant here since like 2002.

And Patrick Stewart hasn't been relevant since 1994 when TNG went off the air. And no, I'm not being mean/felicitous here. hen tried to parley his fame into being a bigger feature film star (The films he headlined didn't do big box office) And hell, his last series he headlined "Blunt Talk" was cancelled after the second season (due to ratings) - so yes, sorry, outside of Star Trek and maybe hardcore X-Men fans (although nobody liked X3 - and X-Men: Days of Future past was practically a cameo role for both Stewart and Ian McKellen ;)).

the fact is - Worldwide Michelle Yoeh is a bigger and more recognized name than Patrick Stewart (and ST: D is worldwide via Netflix, and I'm sure this Picard series will be the same.)

For as wide an audience as possible.

In general, that's not how TV works these days. Audiences are much more fractured because there are many more shows to watch. The standards for what's considered a successful show now in terms of sheer number of viewers are much, much lower than a few decades ago.

This is doubly true for streaming media. I mean, Netflix only has about 57 million subscribers domestically - significantly less than the 126 million U.S. households. And Netflix is the biggest player - Amazon is much smaller, and CBS All Access smaller still. Also note that Netflix/Amazon are shifting their content streams to sci-fi and fantasy. nearly 30% of upcoming Netflix shows are speculative fiction. Geeks will pay premium prices for geek content. The normies are willing to take what they can get on broadcast for free.

Finally, CBS All Access in particular has little to offer at the moment in terms of exclusive content at the moment other than Discovery. There certainly was absolutely nothing else I cared about. The decision to double down and produce the Picard show (along with the other Treks still in conceptual phases) shows that CBS wants to have enough exclusive Trek content to ensure fans don't drop when the content is over for the year. Hence I would expect DIS as well as the new Picard show will be more about catering to "the fans" than chasing down a mainstream demographic who won't fork out for the show anyway.
