Transporter accident leaves Kirk aged 60 years (Shatner). Through Spocks deductive reasoning they find it was no accident. They discover they need to travel back in time to find his lost youth which was abducted by a humpbacked whale using a temporal inversion field. They go back to the 80s and breaking the Prime Directive buy selling of Transparent Aluminium, get enough money to locate the whale who is selling off Kirks youth to the elderly using the cetation institute as its base of ops. The youth is rescued after the enterprise destroyes the institute which is actually an alien ship, piloted by an ancient humpback that is actually the humpbacked ancestor from the civilizations that sent the turd probe in star trek 4 (voyage home) It has stayed alive by stealing youth from other people in time. Many innocent people and sea creatures are killed in this exchange. the movie ends with spock trying to figure out how to reintegrate kirks youth.

Not gonna lie, I'm surprised they haven't done this for more than a one-off ("Rascals", "Tuvix" etc) in Trek's 50 years. Even Sliders did it.

They've never needed to do that before, why start now? Just recast Kirk and get it over with.

Or, better yet, pay Chris the money he's entitled to under contract.

Like any of us, he's worth what people are willing to pay him.

Why start now? Because it explains it away.

Do a 'spin off' movie with the two cast members I like. A Spock and Bones two-hander...

Actually, no, he's worth the amount of money he is entitled to receive as per the terms of his contract, and which apparently TPTB don't WANT to pay him because they don't think he should get as much money due to STB's perceived weak performance at the box office.

Given this, I can't say I blame Chris for holding out for more money. He's not greedy, he's just asking for what he was promised all along. If the studio doesn't want to pay what they SAID they would pay, then why should he bother returning?

It doesn't NEED to be explained.

What was the original plot of Star Trek III going to be? I know Shatner and Nimoy were up for it and it must have been one of those time travel/universal portal jobs to include those two legends so does anyone know? Couldn't it be readapted for just Shatner on his own?

Orci tweeted the plot couple of years back:
“Chase for doohickey against Annunaki to reset back to prime timeline. Theme: The Last temptation of Kirk And Spock”
"It's the temptation. Restore Vulcan, Kirks Father, and Spock's mother? Or play the hand they are dealt"
"Only with help of Prime Kirk, who they meet on the adventure, can they solve the dilemma."

It looks like its been readapted for the Hemsworth ST4 (same writers)

(interestingly from that reddit link leads to a TMcom link where it appears Orci also stated:
'The similarities with our script are very few. We had the massive Starbase, Spock and Uhura breaking up, swarm enemy, and an implication that Sulu was gay, without actual confirmation. But again, Pegg and Lin never read it. And search for ancient doohickey, but ours was for an entirely different purpose. It wasn’t a weapon.'

Orci and those writers had two stories, one with Shatner that shared similarities with Beyond, and one with Kirk's dad (he was talking about the second story on trekmovie ) the one with Shatner got rejected, but the second story is one JJ saved for later.

I think the second story was different and not really an adaptation of the first with Shatner. Because the studio, from what I understand, really didn't like the first story but liked the second..so they must be different enough to create different responses. Orci walked away or they made him walk away because he liked the first better and they had creative differences about the second story with Kirk's dad.

And I guess they couldn't use it for the third movie because they needed a contract with him first, hence why plan C by pegg&co.
I want to hope that after all this time, they already have a plan D, thus another story or reworking of the kirk's dad one, in case they can't get Thor.

Shame that the great Leonard Nimoy will never be able to do it now that he's gone! :(

ST09 was actually Chris Hemsworth's first ever film role. So "Thor" didn't mean $$$ back then...
