Ezri or Jadzia

We spent so long with Jadzia in comparison that its hard not to choose her but I did think Ezri was a worthy successor by the end.

Ezri was underutilized. That might seem like an unusual thing to say given how much screen time she had in a single season, but none of that screentime really ever amounted to anything. She was, conceptually speaking, way more interesting and had way more potential than Jadzia -- which is why it seemed like for a time everyone loved writing her in the litverse.

The problem is, once they had a success on Voyager (and other skiffy shows on the air at the time) TPTB realized what market value pixie dream girls had, and that's all she ever really was -- only wasting NdB's talent.

The irony here is I don't think there's been another woman actor (including Ryan and Blaylock) who was objectified more (by the fandom) than Farrell.

It would have been nice though to really see all that potential in her character come to fruition and grow over a few years. But that would have meant Farrell would have been out of a job before she left on her own because there was never any chance the show was going to last beyond seven years.

I think Ezri was a success because the powers that be learned from the mistakes that they made with Jadzia, and Nicole De boer was a good actress of course. I believe Michael Piller admitted as much.

Well he did hire her again.

*In fact, I'd say her work on TDZ is evidentiary. She has several high-drama scenes throughout the series (that she handles brilliantly) that I just don't think Farrell was capable of.

Farrell was 'Star Trek serviceable fine' the way most the majority of franchise main cast members were. [Unfortunately, she had to share the screen with what easily the most talented (all around) cast.] But had id been her on TDZ, for example, I don't think Piller would have challenged her with the same material.

**And obviously NdB's performance in The Cube speaks for itself.

I'm not sure I get this comment. Seven was clearly not a manic pixie dream girl. Kes was, but they cut her from the show, meanign they didn't see market value in having one.

They both did more than fine with their characters, I definitely was a fan in both cases - I just wish De Boer would have gotten more time with Ezri.

I liked ezri better.

I actually dislike the type of character trope that Jadzia is. the smartest, the best, good at eveything, everyone loves her, and all the guys want to have sex with her

That's a fair point, but originally Kes was not the character slated to be dropped from Voyager, it was supposed to be Kim. They changed their minds when Garret Wang was in People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World issue. So theoretically they may still have seen market value in having this kind of character, although I don't see Ezri as one.

So People magazine saved Garret Wang's career?! I can see why you'd want one of the world's most beautiful persons on your show!

I don't know. I've long suspected that the whole thing wasn't to dump Kes or not to dump Harry but was really to get rid of Lien. Most of the story and apocrypha of what happened over the years has come from the other actors, and they may not have been aware of everything that was going on.

But she started to [publicly] show signs of erratic behavior not long after she left the show. The long-held belief has been that her firing was a catalyst for her mental breakdown. No doubt this is true in part and what happened to her was certainly tragic, but usually, that kind of behavior doesn't just come out of nowhere. And I'm not even suggesting she even acted "crazy" during shooting. I'm just saying it wouldn't surprise me one bit to learn tomorrow that she could be really hard to deal with off set at times.

To bring it back around, I do think de Boer was an attempt to "replace" her. Ryan and Farrell were of similar body type. And Seven and [early] Jadzia of similar disposition. I think TPTB wanted to cover all the bases so to speak.

I think the mistake is not believing that they could be so misogynist that they'd be so intentionally deliberate and methodical in their casting choice. My point is that they absolutely were.

I mean we saw it again with Blaylock and Park. And all the upcoming Disco discussion has made me realize this shit goes all the way back to the beginning with Number One and Colt. Hell. the "juxtaposition" (for lack of a better term) was part of the fucking plot.

I'm more confused. Are you saying that they didn't want two women of the same physique in the franchise, so Farrell was pushed out in favor of Ryan? Considering they used a mastectomy bra for Farrell, that would make no sense. They also never put Farrell in a catsuit.

The only particularly negative thing I heard about Lien during her time on the show was that she developed that latex allergy which made the makeup application impossible. Hence the shift late in season 3 to her ditching the wig, covering her ears with her natural hair and masking the lack of Ocampa ears.

Jeri Ryan and Terry Farrell don't have the same physique. Ryan is curvy, and just a bit above average for a woman (5'8"). Farrell was forced to wear a padded bra by Berman, and is very tall for a woman (6 foot). Aside from both playing characters with long hair (and being somewhat conventionally attractive), there really isn't much similar about them physically.

In general, DS9 did not do sexy clothing for any of the core female cast members. The fanservice was mostly left to Leeta. I actually think Kira got to dress sexy more frequently than either Dax. To the extent they played up attractiveness at all, it was based upon face and attitude. Actually it's to the show's credit, considering the notable lack of any women in the writer's room.

^Chase Masterson has a magnificent physique and most definitely made up for any perceived lack of sexiness amongst the other female cast.

I'm pretty sure it's now had, not has. Her weight has been up and down the last few years it seems. Dunno where it is now. Nana Visitor still looks pretty smoking though.

When I was watching DS9, I was in HS and college, so most of the female cast was just too old for me to relate to as sexual beings at that time. Until Ezri came on in the last season I mean.

Well, there was Visitor's uniform, which highlighted lower parts of her body.

OTOH, Farrell was always in the SF uniform that was black across the torso, which would actually hide the physique when viewed from the front.

They all still look good IMO.
