Ezri or Jadzia

I'm not a huge fan of Ezri, but I liked her more than Jadzia who I found too bland. Jadzia was always the single one DS9 character I never found interesting.

Never liked Ezri, but I did feel like that about Jadzia when I first watched DS9. Going back, she's become my favorite character. She's an odd one. I can't think of a single Jadzia-centric episode I like, except You Are Cordially Invited..., but I think she's a great character for others to play off.

Love Jadzia, hate Jadzia episodes.

Conversely, it's possible that some prefer Jadzia because the actress is tall and modelesque.

From my perspective, as much as I think Jadzia became a better character, Nicole de Boer was the better actress.

Sure, but I rarely see people praise jadzia for her looks. I see a lot of people praising Ezri for being cute.

Again, it’s not so much because she’s attractive as because she’s kinda geeky and feels like someone many trek fans would have a crush on in high school.

People do it a lot. Farrell and Ryan are the two actress from the franchise whom Rick Berman refers to as "babes." (Which apparently has some professional meaning to him.)

I'd also point out that the number of times that "beautiful" is paired with Jadzia or terry on TrekBBS is 400 more than with Ezri or Nicole.

ETA: Jadzia/Terry has a 700 reference advantage if "hot" is substituted for "beautiful."

I don't doubt the presentation, but I doubt it reveals anything about fans' preferences.

Well, reading back through these posts we have three people choosing Ezri because she’s ‘cute’ or they had a crush on her. Zero such mentions for Jadzia.

Trust me, this thread is not the end all and be all on the subject, even on TrekBBS. Indeed, there are plenty of mentions of how much people hated Ezri because (1) her episodes were terrible, (2) it felt like a forced way of keeping Dax around, (3) they would have preferred a character to challenge Worf's sexuality, (4) and indeed, she seemed to be too much of a professional by the end of the season.

Yes, people dislike Ezri for many reasons. They also like her for many reasons, and ‘because she’s cute’ and ‘I had a crush on her’ seem to rank high among them.

Mentions in this post aren’t conclusive proof, but they’re still telling.

Hmm, except this one. (I went back and there was a 'it's hard to resist Terry Farrel', but that's still 1-3 in favour of Ezri.

Obviously none of us are going to go through all mentions across Trek fandom, but I'd like to again state that this isn't really about beauty. Yes, both actresses are attractive, just like nearly all Trek women and most of the men.

I mean, come on:

Thing is, Ezri is more often referred to as cute, and I've seen many, many fans either imply they had a crush on her or come right out and say it. The character plays on that pixieish, approachable nerd girl thing, and I think a lot of fans excuse some the character's failings because of that.

She’s beautiful, but in a small, elfin way. She’s peppy and positive. She’s a little nerdy and clumsy. And if you’re feeling down, well gosh darn it if making you feel better isn’t her goal in life.

She's almost a perfect stereotype of what many Trek fans would want in a girlfriend, and I think some of those characteristics get in the way of the show. I've seen other people on here say Ezri feels more like she should be on a teen sitcom, and this might be why.

Just to clarify, as I said I'm not a great fan of either, and if attractiveness mattered, I'd probably say Kira is my favourite DS9 character.
