We do have a new series with a new cast. It's called Star Trek: Discovery. The Picard miniseries is just a thing to satisfy those of us who don't mind returning cast members. CBS can do both!

What some fans want to see, perhaps. But there are lots of different kinds of fans and we don't all speak with the same voice or have the same tastes or preferences. As this message board proves every day.

There's never going to be any consensus on what "the fans" want . . . because we are not the Borg. :)

Well, as long as they go for a more optimistic and less grimdark version of Trek with Picard then I'll be happy.

I agree that 2020 is more likely, but Discovery took forever to launch because they had a man-child-diva at the helm who throws tantrums as a matter of course, and wasted time at every opportunity. Notice how fast the ball rolled once he was booted.

If actual professionals are involved that know how to play ball and properly launch a project, who knows? After all, Stewart is 78. He's a healthy 78 but time waits for no one. He might want to launch this sooner rather than later.

Why? Why can't we just move on to something new? It seems as if hardly anyone can do something new with many of these sci-fi/fantasy productions. It's either a sequel, a prequel or a reboot.

You do know you're on a 20 year old board dedicated to a 50 year old show, right? :p

20 years post Nemesis, not 20 years post ST09(future). And we're still dealing with the fallout of 9-11 today, so I think the destruction of the entire Romulus system could still be relevant after a decade or more...

By that logic, anything advancing the timeline is new. By even going there with this Picard series, that opens the door for newer characters, settings and stories.. etc.

I hope so. There's enough wink wink references and pow powing is DISCO. Which I do like, but let's see a return to cerebral Trek. Non better to this than Stewart .

Sir Patrick's statement seems to hint that he'll play an older Picard who has retired from Starfleet, probably worn out and disattisfied with the development of the Federation in post-Nemesis, post-Romulus implosion world. I can imagine a Starfleet who just recovered from another conflict created by the destruction of Romulus and has lost its way from the vision of the Federation we all know from the TNG years.

Picard is brought back to Starfleet to resolve a new conflict and as stated above, probably is posted in Enterprise-F or Enterprise-G with a younger crew who views the TNG-era Federation as a distant history. It's up to him not only to save the Federation, but also to instill the positive, can-do spirit, focused on exploration not fighting wars, TNG-era Federation to these younger officers.

And as an aside, I would love to see Picard finally getting together with Dr Crusher in the new series. Leaving their love story unresolved both in the TNG finale and in the movies was a big disappointment for so many Picard-Crusher fans. I hope they finally get them to tie the knot in the new series.

I thought the ensemble of TNG was one of the things that made it. From the sounds of it this looks like it's going only be a Patrick Stewart vehicle though. Without the friendship aspect of the crew I do worry this show might be too dark. Great to hear Oscar and Pulitzer winners (Goldsman & Chabon) are onboard however. They will hopefully give the series gravitas and heft.

And we need to bring Data back as well. I'm sure B4 has matured significantly 20 years after Nemesis. Perhaps he'll be the captain of the Enterprise-F as written in the comic books.

We just need a new actor playing him as Brent Spiner has ruled out playing an older Data.

But can't we all agree that at least a few episodes should involve escorting squabbling diplomats who Are Hiding Something(tm)?

As an actor or a director? Hopefully he'll do both in the new series.

Will Worf return as a TNG/DS9-era Klingon or as a DISCO-era Klingon? If its as the latter that'll be a twist :D:D.

Yes. Plus a few episodes with Picard is being tortured by Q, a few episodes featuring Data (now in B4's body) exploring new ways to behave like a human. And a few Worf/Klingon-centered episodes :D:hugegrin::D

Not true (probably.) It is common misconception that the future portion of AGT is set 25 years after the present portion (2370), but Geordi only says that it has been 25 years since they last served together on Enterprise. In the unaltered timeline they were still serving together in 2379, and possibly continued to so so for several years. So AGT future is probably something like 2405-2410.

I read somewhere about this being a different Picard who has been through wars and disasters etc.
