    I actually am so excited.

Like really, this is stunning news and I absolutely cannot wait.

Although the cynic in me is thinking 'oh good, another Trek project for Jonathan Frakes to insert himself into the middle of.'

Probably also a bad day for Michael Dorn, who is surely the only person on the planet who thinks a 'Captain Worf' series is a good idea :guffaw:

In the admittedly non-canon Countdown comic series that tied the post-NEM era to Star Trek 2009 Picard was a Federation Ambassador who'd given up command of the Enterprise-E around several years earlier and allowed B-4(now effectively the reborn Data) to become the new Captain. If I were writing a new series premiere or pilot I'd have Picard be an Ambassador who'd watched the tremendous political upheavals in the Alpha Quadrant since the Shinzon crisis and the destruction of Romulus and felt unsure as to which directions the Federation should go in its embrace of new allies and old enemies.

Also, one social media report seemed to indicate that the series will take place "20 years after Nemesis" which, if true, would place the new series or miniseries in or around the year 2399, at the very turn of the 25th century and when Picard would be a man in his early nineties approaching the 100-mark. It'd be very fascinating to see what the writers and Stewart could do with a Jean-Luc Picard who's now some thirty-five years past his taking command of the Enterprise-D and a man who's seen the galaxy torn asunder on more than one occasion since his first mission as Captain of that ship.

There hasn't been 100% confirmation one way or the other yet, but it's been heavily hinted to be a one-off revival miniseries/belated grand finale ala Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, 24: Live Another Day and Twin Peaks: The Return.

This is amazing news. I never thought I'd see Stewart as Picard again. I can't wait until we get more details. Until then I'll just smile contentedly.

I'd be happy enough with a four-part miniseries. Some new Picard post-Nemesis is better than none at all!

I am over the moon excited. Finally some post- Nemesis Trek.

As mentioned above I'd like to see some loose ends tied up.

    - Riker FINALLY in Command of the big E.
    -Romulus destruction aftermath
    - Where are they now for the rest of the crew.

It 'd also be a good opportunity to introduce new characters for future shows. Have Picard mentor some of the Academy kids for the potential Starfleet Academy series for example.

    Plus, fortysomething Wesley Crusher.

    Wait, put those rocks down.

It could be awesome to see JL Picard try to reunite old friends to confront a new menace/dissater/attack from an outer entity.
Could be Geordi, O'brien, maybe (lets say) ... Bashir, B'elanna or Paris, to take part of the action.
Maybe the Trek Avengers is not too far away.

    ...Just dreamin'.

Is that online thing really supposed to be canon?

    I'd say...

Absolutely. Heck, DeLancie popped up playing a Q-like character on THE LIBRARIAN just a couple years ago. He's still capable of playing Q. And since Q can assume any form he wants . . . voila!

The series will be set just four years after the events seen in "All good things". Obviously the events in that timeline never happened within the prime timeline. However if they borrowed elements from it, what would you like to see?

I would not mind seeing Captain Crusher [Edit: Sorry I meant Captain Picard :)] in command of the USS Pasteur.

It will certainly be interesting to see in what shape the Romulans are in, if we see them at all. The series will be set 12 years after the destruction of Romulus. Certainly the balance of power in the quadrant would have significantly changed.
I assume you mean STO and not DISCO ;) (as new trek is only released online). It is certainly not protocanon (as it has not appears on screen), but could be considered by some fans as deuterocanon. I would not be surprised if new series chose to borrow elements from it. There is a fan theory that the Iconions as seen in STO will appear in DISCO.
Loved him in Star Trek Continues. It would be fun if Q first appears to Picard as his younger looking self (CGI), and having made a joke about how old Picard now looks Q changes his appearance to match his age.

I understand the various aspects people would like to see, and I’ll certainly watch regardless (it’s what I do with Trek), but I have very little interest in tying up plot threads dating back decades. I’d like an elegiac “last ride” story like Wolverine got in Logan. A final chance to rise to an occasion and a fitting goodbye to the character. And much like Xavier was the only other X-Men character of note in the story, I’d be very happy if only one (or two at most) other TNG character figured in the story in an important way. I’d be most disappointed if this turned into a full blown TNG reunion.

If there’s no mention of Irumodic Syndrome, I’m OUT! :P

Seriously though, while nostalgia is great, we’re literally delving further into the future of mainline Trek than ever before. I would be most looking forward to seeing what new characters and situations will be the foundation of a series set twenty years after we last saw Picard, and how they interact with our known quantity. Should it be Picard as an ambassador being shuttled around to deep space diplomatic hotspots, as many starships have been seen doing in other series? Should it be Proctor Picard finishing a final tour of duty aboard a ship of raw recruits from a revived Red Squad? How about newly-minted CinC Picard commanding an entire fleet against a new galactic-scale threat? Or even President Picard giving us that West Wing idealism we pretty desperately need in today’s political clime?

Or Gods forbid, old man Picard on the family vineyard, bookending a series of flashback adventures of some bushy-haired French ensign reporting to a bucket of a ship by the name of Stargazer? Whatever it is, it should be new and pushing the Trek universe forward instead of banking on the good old days.

Unless this is CBSAA’s version of a Full House / Will & Grace / Roseanne / whatever revival, trying to bring back as much of that TNG-in-its-prime feeling by reuniting Picard with a revolving door of past cast mates and guest stars and capitalizing on the nostalgia to the greatest possible extent... IMO that’s be the worst option. I don’t want to see what The Orville is already giving us either!

Hmmm ... Remember those 318 shore leave days Picard had accumulated in Insurrection? What if? No ...

Based on what Patrick Stewart had to say as far as his resistance to returning and that Picard wouldn't be a captain I have my doubts that the show will be what fans really want to see. Not that it will be bad, but I just see the story going in a more intimate character-study direction with limited exploration and limited pew-pew. I think that's the kind of thing that Stewart would be interested in as an actor first, sci-fi fan second. We'll see.

So they've got Sir Patrick. That's awesome. Since this is a continuation of his story, they really need to have someone besides the people behind STD do the new series. There's no way it would be true to the character.

I have a great idea for a Picard series. It's called "The Search for Spock". Picard travels through time and space in an attempt to find Ambassador Spock who went missing twelve years earlier. By this time the Federation have a better understanding of how to use red matter (or so they think). Picard attempts to travel to the year 2258 (Star Trek 2009), however they don't know that Spock was sent to an alternate timeline. Instead Picard travels to Prime timeline 2258 where he encounters the USS Discovery under the command of Captain Pike, who by coincidence, are engaged in their own "Search for Spock".

I don't think I'm interested. I don't know why CBS All Access couldn't think of another series featuring a new cast, instead of bringing back an old character as the lead again.
