Anson Mount as Pike SAVES This Show! Wow.

How can a couple of seconds screen time "save this show"? I'm a bit confused....did it need saving?

Agreed. A few seconds doesn't say shit. But to answer you're last question. Yes. Discovery needs saving. Hence the intro of the Enterprise and Pike. Gimmick 1. Point CBS. JJ Abrams would be proud. Khaaaaaaaaaan! Khaaaaaaaaan! ~ Spock into Darkness.

It didn’t need saving. Some people just have very high opinions of their opinions.

I will admit though, it’s nice to see what appears to be a lighter tone than last season. It could get a little dour in season 1.
Yeah. I liked Pike in the Abrams movies. Never really got to know him as a box with a lightbulb, so it was cool. I like what I see so far of season 2, which isnt much but seems devoid of Klingons and a lot more fun.

Pike is still about 7 years away from the accident, because he does hand over the Enterprise to Kirk in the mid 2260s, and Kirk meets him.

I wasn't thinking of the accident.

I was thinking more of the ineffectual, bigoted buffoon with anger management issues we saw in The Cage and how awful he would be as a lead.

Well, not exactly. Kirk meets Pike when Pike is promoted to Fleet Captain. Kirk also meets Pike when Pike hands over the ship to Kirk. Nothing to say these would be one and the same meeting; the way it's phrased in "The Menagerie", the promotion thing would be the first-ever meeting of the two. Maybe it's already in the past of this show? After all, Pike already wears the regalia of Captain here.

But at that first meeting at the promotion, Pike supposedly is "handsome, vital, active", so whatever additional accidents he had, those didn't slow him down much...

I'm pretty sure this Pike is still just supposed to be a regular Captain, not a Fleet Captain. That meeting has to still be in the future.

That being said, I can already see James T. Kirk coming onto this series by Season 3, in order to keep the CBS subscriptions afloat. Either as Captain, or Burnham's first officer that she mentors and introduces to Spock.

The overall vibe I get from Discovery in general is that it's too "try-hard". It panders. Even though S2 looks to be tonally very different from S1, it's still pandering, placing bets on a "hook" (in this case, lighter Kelvin-style humor).

I don't get the sense that the show has the confidence to be its own thing. It's a corporate "product" and nothing more than the sum of its corporate-agreed-upon parts.

The current TV model is simply different than it was in the past. You simply don't need as big an audience to continue being produced, so you can afford to cater to a more niche audience than ever before.

It isn't something I'm really enjoying, but I understand the thinking behind it.

Like the castings for Pike and Number One.

Not really encouraged by the trailer. Action gimmicks and snot jokes. Barf.

What the show needs is better writing and creative vision. Not sure they have it. Looks like JJ verse Trek to me. I hate JJ verse Trek (though Beyond was better than the first two).

Well, the two statements come in consecutive sentences from Kirk...

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him.

...and seem clearly intended to reflect the same occasion. But if that's not the case, then there are only two possibilities:

1) Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain some time before Kirk took command of the Enterprise, and for some reason retained personal command of that particular ship despite the promotion

2) Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain some time after Kirk took command of the Enterprise, yet for some reason the two never met when the command was handed off

I suppose neither one of those is strictly impossible, but neither one strikes me as particularly plausible, either.

The remark about Pike being about Kirk's age was a hasty error on Roddenberry's part. Pike was at least a decade older than Kirk, probably more.

When Shatner and Hunter filmed their respective Trek pilots they were roughly the same age, within a couple of years - mid-thirties. But the action of "The Cage" is established as having occurred thirteen years before that of "The Menagerie."

Yeah, but Mendez is older than either one, and could easily see them both as fitting into a "younger generation" of captains. It's an understandable elision. (And the Pike we meet then is certainly a lot closer to Kirk's age than the one presented to us in the Abrams films.)

It's only a 14-year age difference. FWIW, I routinely hang out with friends and colleagues who are 14 years (or more) different from me in age, and think of us all as peers.

FWIW, I do not think they show needs saving. With lots of new Trek coming on TV, it is the vehicle for a lot of those news shows.

Especially Pike/Number One.

I'm tempted to agree with you, but, at the same time, I think we ought to give them a little slack. If they've really recognized the problems with the first season and are trying to course-correct, they deserve kudos for that. It's only reasonable they would want to telegraph that in the previews, even if it comes across as a little heavy-handed.

I hope I'm not just setting myself up for disappointment.

I just want good writing, first of all. Dark/light whatever, make it good damn it!
Second of all, make it stand on it's own. In Season 2, they will already have Enterprise/Pike/Spock/Number One play some non-trivial roles. If STD wants to be taken serious, let's have a season with NO MENTION of any previous Star Trek iteration (other than small wink wink, nudge nudge here or there)
