Disney fires James Gunn from "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3"

I know it doesn't determine the President, I was just talking about in context of your original statement that most Americans Lean Right.

It looks like Gunn has said he understands why Disney fired him and has no qualm about it. He should of blamed it on the sleeping pills :p

By many, I meant registered US voters. The right hates them with all their heart, and that certainly spills to the commoners. I suppose I'm looking at all of this through more of a political viewpoint.

Obviously, we are both getting off topic, but, the Right doesn't hate the entertainment industry. They hate certain people in the industry. They love Rosanne. They love Tim Allen.

And to be honest... it's only the vocal Right.

If the all of those who considered themselves conservative and on the right hated Hollywood with "all their heart," movies wouldn't be making millions of dollars on a weekend, shows wouldn't be watched by millions of people.

In other words: I wouldn't take to much weight in the idea the Right hates Hollywood.

I know it would be pretty much impossible, but this whole situation is kind of making me wish they could put a statute of limitations on how long social media posts like this can be held against you.

Something is afoot at Marvel. Firing Gunn over tweets that were made six years ago smacks of a cover story for the real reason he was released. What else is happening behind the scenes at Marvel?

You seem to be stuck on it being a right/left issue rather than a right/wrong one ;)

Well, it was a Right Wing asshole who decided to dig up the tweets, so, making it a Right/Left issue isn't wrong.

I would be surprised if this isn't the real reason. These aren't just "hey, stoopid people are dumb" tweets. They are pretty awful. I don't see why Disney, family friendly Disney, would want to be associated with them. And, they sorta fired Rosanne for her tweets... so...

This is the real reason.

The one about The Giving Tree made me laugh; I've always found Shel Silverstein's children's books a bit precious.

I'm 99% certain I have never made a rape or a pedophilia joke. I know a lot of people who haven't--at least, I'm pretty certain. So, again...

I don't know if there's any kind of joke that I'm "99% certain" I've never made, though I can say that there are many kinds I haven't made since I was young...and there are certain kinds of gross humor that I can't stand and do have a reflexive physical revulsion on hearing.

"Dead baby" jokes. I've probably never told one of those.

I agree. If the old jokes were the same subject manner but told differently I'm guessing the reaction wouldn't have been as bad, but he sometimes writes himself first person as a pedophile. Jokes or not, that's hard for Disney to ignore. (In terms of it sticking to them if they go nothing.)

Complete overreaction over some jokes. They weren't good jokes but come one, it's not like that stuff is off limits, see Family Guy.

I happen to think Family Guy, as a prime-time comedy (unlike the Ted movies where he has more leeway), often crosses the line and that Seth is the luckiest man in Hollywood for getting away with it. It's almost like he's been given carte blanche in a way nobody else would.

Seems rather odd that Disney didn't do the work into him before hiring him. Anyway, they were just jokes. America does seem to get more and more sensitive these days. Someone like Frankie Boyle would probably get the death sentence over here.

The sex gags in Guardians 1 and 2, and you all know which two I'm referring to, one of which plagiarized from a sitcom (that also should never have crossed that line), should have been red-flags. These jokes were unnecessary. They were put in specifically to push the envelope, which is not something you should be doing in a non-R rated comic book movie that needs to sell merch to kids.

At the time I felt that these were cultural watersheds. For instance, witness how much casual swearing is going on in this very thread. The fact is that that people's interpersonal skills have eroded to the point where nobody feels they need to censor how they communicate for different social contexts. It's a verbal free-for-all all the time.

Well, it is...until it isn't, as James Gunn has now learned.

It's nice to know there's still a line out there you can't cross.

No, I don't think Gunn is a pedophile or sexist per se. What I think, though, is when you make jokes like that, it demonstrates that you lack empathy towards those who are going to feel offended. It's the joke equivalent of throwing an IED. It's more important to get a strong reaction than it is to be respectful of someone's feelings.

That's why jokes beyond a certain point start to feel the same as bullying or hate-speech.

So these tweets actually came to light back in 2012, but nothing happened.

Why is this time different?
As I said earlier: leaving them up on Twitter, even through laziness or negligence, implies a continued endorsement of their content. You don't have to like it, but that's the way that medium is now.

I know it would be pretty much impossible, but this whole situation is kind of making me wish they could put a statute of limitations on how long social media posts like this can be held against you.
I agree, if he'd deleted them years ago. See above.

I can only think of the Jackson Pollack joke in Vol. 1... but I can't forget that Age of Ultron is the one where Tony makes a serial rape joke.

RDJ should be careful now since he did some questionable things when he was younger.
I doubt it matters now since he’s more or less done
