It's a big, weird universe out there. One extra-galactic stray does not an invasion scouting force make.

One of the best things Lucas and the Clone Wars crew were able to do was to not just blindly incorporate certain elements from the EU, but adapt them to fit better within Lucas's vision of Star Wars.

Take for example the Mandalorians. The TCW version of them as a culture struggling to escape a violent past and contending with militant fringe elements nostalgic for the days when they could just murder and enslave people for fun and profit is *way* more interesting than a bunch of wish fulfilment space Spartans, as depicted by a person that doesn't fully grasp what the perioeci and helots were about.

It's a trend that's continued on Rebels and even the movies now where certain things are cherry-picked and improved to better work with a larger cohesive narrative. Using the Vong as weird space marauders is no different that using the old Dark Trooper designs as Imperial security droids. It's a fun reference that isn't over burdened with left-over baggage.

Yeah both the Mandalorians and Nightsisters strayed from how they were depicted in the novels/comics before Clone Wars.

The Mandalorians and Clones strayed so much that it reportedly upset Karen Traviss so much that she refused to write anymore Star Wars books.

Wow. I literally cheered when I heard the news. I mean, I jumped out of my chair, fists pumping in the air, and yelled "YES!" Clone Wars is the reason I'm a Star Wars fan today and I can't wait.
And this is (one) of the reasons I will always have respect for George Lucas. As a storyteller, he left much to be desired. But he clearly loves Star Wars and and Clone Wars really was a passion project for him.

I didn't believe it when I read it and I still don't really believe it right now. This is stupid exciting; hard to contain the joy.

And the Ashoka reveal?! I mean, I was pretty excited when she came back for Rebels....but THIS..!!! I lost my shit. This is the Ashoka I wanted back!

I saw another theory that it could be three arcs, the 4 episode 'Bad Batch', the 4 episode 'Utapau' arc and then 4 episodes for the Siege of Mandalore.

Well I saw those points too - debunked as some saying that the Bad Batch and Crystal Crisis arcs were "done" and as such, wouldn't be revisited. Something about the wording on the official website regarding all new episodes. Eliminate even the toughest stains.

Maybe it is certain-point-of-view-territory? Here's a pinned reddit list of unfinished episodes which I think is a useful resource:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/TheCloneWa...ything_we_know_about_the_unfinished_episodes/

They are worth a look. A couple I'd never heard of. Some I'm not interested in... but point is, there are a lot of unfinished story arcs.

EDIT: How could Bad Batch be debunked? Isn't it right there - in the trailer??:D Looks like Anaxes.

The opening scene from the second episode of the Bad Batch arc is in the trailer.

It's entirely possible they re-purposed it for the trailer or for another episode, but not everyone has watched those animatics.

I feel you and recently challenged my own post on that same topic. ^^
Even if we'd already seen 2/3 of these forthcoming episodes, I'd still sleep well tonight knowing both Crystal Crisis and Bad Batch will get the fully animated treatment they deserve.

Why stop at 12? Why not do every unfinished episode? Maybe some of them will be reduced to 2-3 episode arcs. They all don't have to be 4 episodes long. Kinda like Season 6 aka "The Lost Missions" was.

I read somewhere that the show wasn’t going to end with the battle of Coruscant but actually a few months after that. I know the Mandalore thing with Ashoka and Maul was during Episide III But I don’t know what they could do after that, in relation to the Clone Wars.

It would be cost effective from a production stand point to use the two arcs that were already closest to completion. I mean they were pretty much fully voiced, shot and edited, they just needed to be animated, lit and rendered. So there's a good chance that they're going that route, especially if they spent the lion's share of the budget on the SoM arc, which wasn't even that far along when the plug was pulled.

Plus he gave Filoni the keys to the kingdom and free reign with his baby. Something he hadn't done since Irvin Kershner and Lawrence Kasdan's Empire Strikes Back. The prequels (Particularly the first two. Revenge of the Sith is halfway decent.) were his downfall. The Clone Wars was his redemption.

"All-new" is advertising-speak that isn't always accurate. I mean, even a clip show always gets billed as "an all-new episode" rather than "a part-new episode." But in this case, it's not really wrong. Yes, the animatics were released, and their stories are considered canonical, but they aren't really finished episodes, more like bonus features.

    Time and budget, presumably.

It clearly has a higher budget then Rebels, Disney is probably treating this as a special project.

And limiting the number of episodes was probably the trade-off for that higher budget.

It’s for their streaming service so I imagine it’ll have a higher budget. Space Show Discovery was similar; having a higher budget than the previous shows because it was a internet show.

It's difficult to compare the budget to 'Rebels' since that show had to make whole new episodes from scratch. With these, a good chunk of the work is already done, so if they spent exactly the same per-episode as 'Rebels', most of that money goes into the post production work rather than pre-production and shooting so it will indeed end up looking a lot better. So for all we know, the budget could be *less* than it was for 'Rebels'.

The number of episodes may simply be a matter of cost effectiveness since they still have to spend some money up-front to get the production pipeline moving again. It could be they went into this only intending to do the Mandalore arc (because: no brainer, if you can only do *one* more arc, that's the one to pick) but found it's more efficient if they actually do another 8 or 9 episodes on top of those 3 or 4.

A similar thing happened with the Futurama revival IIRC, so there's certainly precedent.
I've only read a few of her SW books and honestly, that's no great loss. As I said, that particular depiction of the Mandos was about as fanwanky as I've ever seen a licensed property.
Personally I like that Lucas & Filloni depicted that kind of culture for what was: a bunch of selfish, over privileged bullies out to victimise & exploit the weak and helpless for their own self aggrandisement. Honorable warriors my arse.

The ancient Mandos may well have been the elite warriors of legend and may even have actually been honorable in the beginning...but you can't build a society *entirely* around warrior culture and not have it require a large slave class to do all the actual work so the elites can afford to spend all their time honing their skills. Down that path lies decadence and corruption. No wonder the Jedi went after them.

Well based on the trailer they updated the old clone wars models, they're higher quality.

Will it keep the 2.40:1 aspect ratio? They used to show it like that on Sky Movies over here and it gave the show a more cinematic look.
