Clone Wars is returning!

Very cool! Wasn't the biggest fan of TCW, but am excited to see The Siege of Mandalore.

I read part of the reason they cancelled it was because it was so expensive, Lucas was actually making a loss on it.

Lucas was personally funding it out of his own pocket starting with season 3 IIRC. Rumours said $1 Million per episode, but that was never confirmed.

I believe that Disney initially wanted to move away from the Prequels as far as they could.
I don't believe that one bit.

I believe only reason they focused on the OT was nostalgia and the fact it tied in better with the sequel movies.

There have been a few books and comics since Disney came along that took place close or in the Prequel era.

I believe that Disney initially wanted to move away from the Prequels as far as they could. But as time would tell, it was not the best idea. So the Prequel themes were gradually reintroduced into the material.

But yeah, Rebels were produced on a far smaller budget.
It had nothing to do with "getting away from the prequels". That's a fan conspiracy theory that has been thoroughly debunked. It did however have everything to do with TCW being broadcast on Cartoon Network; a direct competitor to the Disney Channel. And that's not Disney being spiteful or anything, it's just business. Indeed, depending on the terms of the contract, they have have had to cancel the show, regardless of whether they wanted to or not.

Season six was never broadcast on Cartoon Network.

So would this be considered a season 7? or a separate mini-series?

Yeah, I noticed there seems to be more cloth and hair simulation in that shot, though it may simply be a necessary step to match Anakin & Obi-Wan to their RotS costumes as much as possible. After all, that story directly leads into the opening of the movie. Like, that scene could take place as little as a day prior to RotS.

Just to nip this in a bud before the neysayers get here, this is not a reaction to TLJ/Solo, as the production would have started at least a year ago, so before the movies even came out.

It takes at least a year to make an episode, and they had mostly complete footage in that trailer.

Well, this is interesting. The Clone Wars mando stuff was always its worst stuff, but at this point I'm up for some more of a good SW cartoon.

Fuck yes!!!

Also, Filoni stepped down as Star Wars Rebels' supervising director/showrunner back in 2016 after Season 2 (with Justin Ridge replacing him for Seasons 3-4) in order to oversee various LucasFilm Animation projects. Apparently, this was one of them. I can see why he jumped at the chance. There's nothing quite like closure.

This is certainly a surprise. I never had a chance to watch Rebels, but I loved Clone Wars and I'd love to see more episodes. That being said, I had made my peace with the show ending the way it did.

That shot of the camera coming down and following the LAAT into the hangar is directly from one of the unfinished episodes

Yeah, Filloni switching jobs was one of the things that made me suspect something like this might be in the works. That plus a certain coyness about the unproduced scripts, just a tease of the SoM script appearing in the 'Ahsoka' novel and various other comments and indeed, conspicuous lack of comments from certain parties.

Honestly though, I'm surprised they're going for as many as 12 episodes. I've been quietly hoping for the last year or two that *maybe* they'd be allowed to adapt 'The Siege of Mandalore' arc into a feature length direct to home video type movie.

IIRC they've previously said that they had most, if not all scripts through to season 8 completed, so there's plenty of material just sat on the shelf is Disney wants to order another batch if this proves a success.

Just speculating, but I think the 12 episodes are going to break down as three arcs of 2-4 episodes followed of course by a 3 or 4 part 'Siege of Mandalore' arc. Logically one of those arcs should be the 'Ahsoka's Walkabout' arc, with the one of the other two probably being the 'Son of Dathomir' arc since that does tie up certain loose ends and connects direct into SoM. As for the remaining episodes...the first Bad Batch arc seems very likely or maybe the second Yoda/Wookiee one?

I doubt they'll be adapting the 'Dark Disciple', at least not yet since that's something like 6-8 episodes all on it's own. The Utapau arc doesn't seem like a priority either for obvious reasons. The Boba Fett/Cad Bane arc could be fun, but I wonder if they'll save that for a movie tie-in?

This is certainly a surprise. I never had a chance to watch Rebels, but I loved Clone Wars and I'd love to see more episodes. That being said, I had made my peace with the show ending the way it did.
Go watch Rebels. I won't spoil anything, but there's a number of major direct ties back to TCW that make it worth it even if you're not massively invested in the new cast of characters. Also, the coda for that show is kind of a big deal for any TCW fan...just saying.
