USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

Well, what I'm saying that since I don't think the show's very good I have no reason to try to accommodate any inconsistencies it introduces.

Maybe but in the final analysis, that just means that you give more weight of evidence on the episodes you like, which is, while understandable, not very rational.

Generally speaking, I don't think it's important to reconcile inconsistencies even in the Trek I do like

That's a much more rational approach.

Personally, I actually would love nothing more than near-total consistency. It helps with the immersion into the fictional world. However, I also understand the realities of writing a long-lived franchise like this.

If I were going to try and rationalise it in-universe, I think I'd just say DSC is the post-ENT Temporal war timeline.

Right. All these time travel episodes mucked up the timeline real bad.

^Bingo.

I understand why fans want things to fit together, but I really don't get why anyone would worry about what CBS says is canon. Without a creator like Roddenberry in charge, it just becomes a series of business decisions made by an ever-changing cast of random people. What's canon today may not be tomorrow if there's money to be made from it, just like with Star Wars. Why invest any emotional energy into it?

On the other hand we have to agree on what's the official content of the universe if we want to have a basis for discussion. And the official content of the universe is what we call the canon.

If you look really close at that Parralel Lives arc in the IDW comics you can see me in the background!

[NCC-243]
That's 1701 divided by 7  I like it comfy!
With my NCC-683 designation I only get divided by Klingon torpedoes because I was out on a limb with some outrageous landing party to a planet that the federation literally made out of nothing.

But starfleet will still send me against the Borg...

For anyone interested, I am off to the movies forum to post up a thread because I just discovered that they demoted Scotty before Kirk....while they were still on Vulcan.

Maybe for his hand in sabotaging Excelsior and stealing the Enterprise.

The franchise is in it's prime, yes, why are you askouting (asking+shouting)?

It's just kind of a joke.

Because this discussion has gone in circles for 330 pages.

And nobody is going to come off their position.

"It's a reboot!!!"
"No, it's prime"
"No it isn't!!!"
"YES IT IS!!!!"
"How can you say that??"
"Because it IS!!!"
"Sez WHO??
"Sez me and them!!!"
"You and them are WRONG!!!"
"No SIR!"
"YES sir!!!"

...And some discussion about windows vs. viewscreens that I honestly thought was going to be the next "But Is Starfleet a Military" discussion!

I love when this stuff happens out here. It's a good time.

Do we really have to have official blessings in order to have discussions? I don't ever remember needing them before now.

Congratulations on entirely missing the point and in fact acting as if I've made the exact opposite one. It's almost as if you're doing it deliberately.

No, the point isn't some nonsense like you've written above. It's quite clearly, as I said plainly before, that we need a basis for conversation regardless of context. If you think of canon as one thing, and me as another, then we'll just be talking past one another.

I just read an article that talked about how the spore drive is impossible because animals are incapable of accomplishing horizontal gene transfer.
And? Star Trek is full of the implausible. Starting with
Star Trek Writers Guide said:
Mister Spock's mother was human, his father a native of the planet Vulcan. This alien-human combination results in Mister Spock's slightly alien features with the yellowish complexion and satanic pointed ears.

On the other hand, we have zero idea who is actually calling the shots these days, how the decisions are being made and whether anything other than money factors into decision-making. In that regard, caring about CBS's view of "canon" is, to me, like worrying about reconciling all the adventures of the Geico lizard.

Personally, I don't care about Gene's Vision, either, but I can understand why people would place value in that. Certainly more so than Trek as work by ever-changing corporate committee.
While I'm sure the network has notes ( as they always have) I'm pretty sure most of the shots are being called at the production level same as the other shows.

Not if you take off the jacket. Then you are left with a color coded long sleeve pullover and black pants. Sound familiar? All that's missing is the TOS version of the Cage landing party jacket to tie everything together.
If you have to start removing stuff, the argument is lost.

How many unexplainable inconsistencies do there have to be, to relocate DSC to a parallel universe??
As many as there are fans X their individual preferences. My own are based on the "history" not the visuals. Though that's always been inconsistent so there's some leeway.

Leeway seems to be a matter of personal choice. I am far more forgiving with visual inconsistencies than most people I know..
