Can I vote for 'Originality'? No? My vote would be Flashforward but I'm probably the only one in the world who feels that way. King of the Hill is an interesting choice, it'd be a completely different show in today's political climate, as Hank would probably be a Trump supporter. Another relatively obscure one, Arliss, an old HBO show about an amoral sports agent. I think it fits better into today's TV world than that of the 90s, and I think there's lots more interesting sports topics now to cover. And what about The Critic? Community, naturally, still needs its movie.
I'm usually fine with shows that are cancelled or end, however there is one show that I would liked to continue. Journeyman, I really enjoyed the performances and the mysteries surrounding why Dan Vasser was jumping through time. It's the only show I would have like to continue to actually learn why it was going on.
That's a good choice. Did it end with anything unresolved though? And how would the actress who voiced Luanne be addressed? Re-cast voice actress? Retired character like "The Simpsons" does? Dead? Moved away? Disappeared? But while I agree Hank would be a Trump supporter, I want politics out of the shows. Another good one. Considering how much worse films have gotten since then, and the popularity of Youtube channels like the Nostalgia Critic and CinemaSins, it could work.
I think films are equally bad now as in the 90s, but bad in different ways. Remember that was the time that gave us Speed 2. I agree it’d be good to have some TV programs be a sanctuary from politics, but can you avoid it in a show meant to be realistic? King Of The Hill’s main villain was bureaucracy, personified by the Stickboy character. That image is exactly what Trump has weaponized to make people angry about PC-culture-as-villain. You can’t have those kinds of villains in 2018 and still have it pass as apolitical. In 1997 you could be politics adjacent without the appearance of taking a political side, but that is no longer the case, so you can’t do the same sort of stories without taking up arms in the culture war.
Despite the fact they only made two of their planned six seasons, I'm totally fine with where and how Carnivàle ended; that said, I would buy the heck out of a comics continuation. And someone could absolutely reboot Man Seeking Woman with a new city, characters, etc.
Here's a better way to explain my point about King of the Hill. In the episode that introduced Khan, Khan was being a rude jerk and Hank said "It has nothing to do with race, I don't like the MAN." Peggy replies "People are going to think you don't link him because he's Chinese" (Even though he's from Laos). Hank replies "What kind of world is it if you can only hate a man if he's white?" In 1997, he's an old fashioned guy pointing out a cultural hypocrisy. You believe him, he hates Khan because Khan is a rude obnoxious person, and not because he's Asian. In 2018, it takes on the voice of every racial controversy that's come up in the last few years, and maybe you don't believe him as much. It feels like the same sort of white self-victimization spouted by hate groups and every asshole who's ever sprayed around the word 'libtard'. In 1997 you could attack political correctness and you were just attacking political correctness. Now we live in a world where racists and sexists scream about political correctness when they are called on their actual racism and sexism. So complaining about political correctness takes on the voice of racism and sexism whether you want it to or not. It's also very different having a character who supports Trump from having one who supports Bush. You could support Bush without being seen as supporting hatred against homosexuals and cruelty against immigrants, but if you support Trump, you are seen as endorsing all his most hateful, cruel policies. So you can't do the sort of stories King of the Hill did with Trump as president and still get away with it not coming off as political.
King of the Hill is / was one of the shows Fox was supposedly looking into bringing back. But I think the merger with Disney is the only real reason it will never happen. However did we all forget that Bush is a mass murdering war criminal? He killed hundreds of thousands of people at the very least. He and many other people who are still in the government should all be shot for crimes against humanity.
Firefly. Also, one more season of Enterprise would have been nice with the brilliant momentum Manny Coto had going in Season 4.
I'll go for "West Wing" - intelligent political discourse, more or less consistency in policy... I yearn for that when politics are ruled by Twitter-entries, and dominated by one issue (at least here in Europe) covering up such a multitude of problems that are going to fall on our heads in the near future.
LOVE The West Wing and pretty much anything else that Sorkin writes, for that matter. Not sure how you could bring it back this late, though. would have to use pretty much new cast across the board and I'm not sure you could get the same dynamics and chemistry the original cast had. TWW has become my "comfort TV". I can put on a random disc from the complete series set on a Saturday afternoon and quite happily watch three or four episodes at a pop.
They are somewhat planning West Wing come back. Sorkin plan is to have Bartlett secretly advising the current president over something. But I wouldn't hold your breath. Odyssey 5 should come back! That was a great Manny Coto show, one of the best sci-fi shows ever. It was a huge hit for Showtime and was canceled after one season not because of ratings but because the president of the channel hated sci-fi. The second season was going to be interesting.
I agree with a lot of the shows already listed. I would add in Yes, Prime Minister and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
I want more Murder One, but they need to bring back Daniel Benzali as the lead. It should be much easier for them to tell the story of a single trial spread across a whole season compared to how crazy it was considered back in 1995.
Yeah, I loved The Critic and I think it was unfairly cut short. I think given the endless material of movies past and present, it would definitely be a great one to come back.
