What would you be more offended by...

Herbert was a minor official known for his rigid, limited patterns of thought where as the good Captain was very easy going most of the time unless he was around some space hippies!

Right on, JB.

One of my issues with Way to Eden - and a few other S3 eps, but WTA is where the problem gets me the most - is that it contains what is essentially bad fanservice by the writers, propping Spock at Kirk's expense. I see this as a reaction to Spock being so popular and that's fine. But there wasn't any reason to make Kirk look like an out-of-character jerk just to give Spock a boost. The message here is basically, "Kirk is uncool; Spock is hip."

I love Spock and cried when Nimoy died. But there were ways to give Spock his due without hurting Kirk's character in the process - e.g., Tholian Web, All Our Yesterdays, Cloud Minders. In Way to Eden, they really botched that (although, interestingly, Kirk is ultimately right about the hippies, for the most part).

Another example is in DS9's Trials and Tribble-ations when they had Jadzia ogling Spock in the corridor and naturally throwing in a dismissive "No, not him" when Sisko assumed she was sizing up Kirk. I remember watching that for the first time and realizing exactly what was about to happen - a shot at Kirk while propping Spock. Annoying. But perhaps the worst offender is The Enterprise Incident.

Well you couldn't expect the Romulan Commander to go for Kirk when Spock was there surely, Phase! I mean you know that thing with Vulcans and Romulans...:vulcan::rommie::adore:
