My company gives 16 weeks full pay to birth mothers, 6 weeks for everyone else like fathers and adoptive parents. But my company's considered a top employer in the United States for women.

Wow, I had no idea it was that much. When I have a baby I will be lucky to get 6 weeks then have to pay $1200 a month for day care when I go back to work
That's great. My boss just had a baby, she got 8 weeks.
Eight weeks paid leave after having a baby? And then is it a choice of down to nothing or back to work?

oh of course. Medical insurance will pay for most of it, but it will still probably end up costing me a few thousand out of pocket

There's assistance you can get if you're "low income" but it's hard to get it.
And I'm always right above that line. I make too much to get any assistance, but not enough to be really comfortable.
I'd forgotten about this thread ... I have asked my boss and have been approved to take some time off the early part of July. The trouble is, I'm still undecided on where to go. I'm on a budget, and taking a cruise, touring Europe, or going to Hawaii for a week is absolutely out of the question. The eastern coast of Mexico is definitely a possibility again this summer since the rates are more reasonable.

Yep, but the UK is one of those horrible Liberal Socialist countries the right in the US is warning people about. Yep and you get shared Parental leave and/or shared parental pay (it also applies to adoptions) 50 weeks and 37 weeks pay (though only in the first year).
For SSP it's £92.05 per week for up to 28weeks though you have to have 4 consecutive days off sick (including non-working days) to qualify for it. Though you may also get Company Sick Pay (CSP) from your employer how much and for how long often depends on length of service.
You could go to Vietnam or another Asian country with inexpensive accommodation. Have a look where the bargain airline deals are and then google everything else.
We fancy Mexico for next year if we get a holiday, or Cuba. It’s being the wrong side of the Atlantic that’s prohibitive.

It's a little more complex than but 2 or 4 weeks (depending on where you work) is mandatory for the woman to take off after the birth. But if you are interest in how the UK system works

Just returned from my vacation. Had a lot of relaxing moments including bathing in a skyline pool and massages. I took a guided tour into a dam conduit of a reservoir. I climbed the stairway of a nice gorge and I went up on top of the Kitzsteinhorn plattform (it was cold there, I needed an extra jacket). You have to ride by panorama lift, then chair lift and finally by a ropeway to get there.
