Nominally, yes, the Genesis Chamber is the only way they reproduce. But perhaps Seg and Lyta use it themselves to conceive Dru-Zod. Or maybe they figure out a way to reproduce the old-fashioned way. I think there was a story in one version of the continuity where Jor-El and Lara were the first couple to conceive naturally in ages.

The show has been unclear about that. It's implied that losing Kandor's Genesis Chamber would rob all Kryptonians of the means to reproduce, but we know that can't be, since they still have children after Brainiac takes Kandor in the original timeline.

But then, maybe losing the Chamber forces them to reinvent natural pregnancy. Still, given that each city-state seems to be its own independent, separate culture, it's hard to believe they'd all depend on Kandor for procreation.

I had the impression that was the actual conception of their child, who would probably be Jor-El (since Zor-El was Jor's younger brother, from what I can tell).

Yea, the computer gave them a view of their child, and took DNA to put together. They had to give a blood sample, I think they just have to be ready to push the baby button, and once the chamber is done, they can have their new baby in maybe 9 months after gestation..

Maybe Lyta, messes with the chamber and switched Nyssa's DNA for hers and pushed the Go button, and runs off in the tunnels with a baby Dru-zod, and later Nyssa and Seg conceive Jor-el in another city? Also, remember, there's still a war coming. Seg unites all the other city states and they fight Brainiac after he takes Kandor. The show is called Krypton, not Kandor, so I fully expect season 2 to be a repell the alien invader war story arc, which would be amazing. The beauty of this show is it's got so much potential to tell stories of Krypton and it's past, that we could very well see Some amazing shit! Imagine the true Rao coming out, or superman back in time on his world. Or the Kryptonian Scientist who becomes basically a Kryptonian Superman as Futuro. So much potential. I'm siked to see the finale, and hopefully a war season coming next year! This to me is a huge Hit. The only fictional race I knew of that could rival time Lord's of Gallifrey were the Kryptonians. It just happens that at this point in Kryptonian History, they are recovering from a devastation of some kind and the dystopian Kandor fits perfectly with the Brainiac theft. From what I know, it's Jor-el that leads Krypton into a golden age of wonderous tech before the planet explodes. So we'll see.

My understanding of the way the Genesis Chamber works is that each bound Kryptonian pair is assigned a specific date and time to go there and provide a DNA sample, at which point a child is conceived and the gestation period begins.

Also, it's my understanding that natural conception is still possible; Kryptonian society has just "evolved" beyond relying on it for the "perpetuation of the species", which has in turn freed the people from the social stigmas and expectations attached to sex and sexuality.

I appreciate the answers regarding the genisys chamber, I guess Lyta could just make Dru-Zod with a drop of Seg-El DNA, no need for them to get together ever again. In fact, maybe the DNA already stored at the chamber can be used more then once. I also want to say thanks to everyone who brings some historical information into the thread :)
@Christopher I had no idea Jor-El had a brother and several things @starsuperion mention sound like exciting possibilities for future seasons .

    If I could ask for anything I would love to learn more about the history of the chamber, how long has it been in use, when was the last biological child born;
Also would love to learn more about the rest of the Kandorian cities; is there another branch of the El or Zod family lines in other cities ? seems like Jor-El and Dru-Zod are individuals of significance in Kandoropolis. I inferred that they were both members of the council from what Zod said, if they are both immigrants from the destruction of Kandor at the hands of Brainic , how did they climb to the top of political pile in a new city so quickly ?
    looking forward to the finale

I don't remember that. Per se' but I do recall the head of Black Zero saying the chamber was the only way they can survive and perpetuate their species.

Interesting how the series states ancient Kryptonian tech was more advanced then Seg-El's time frame. Referencing Doomsday's stasis Chamber.

From what I recall Futuro's experiments in DNA and radiation led to Jor-El's work as he was a teenage genius lab assistant, and possibly why Kal-El is able to metabolize radiation in his cells as Superman.

No, they've explicitly said at least twice now, including just last night, that the destruction or loss of the Genesis Chamber would leave the Kryptonians unable to reproduce at all.

Are you spelling "genesis" that way because of the really bad Terminator Genisys movie? That was a deliberate misspelling that I think was the name of a corporation or something within the film.

Umm... does Supergirl ring a bell? Superman's cousin, and therefore the daughter of a sibling of Jor-El?

^ Good deal! It's been uneven this season, but there's been enough to like that I definitely hoped we'd get more.

Great news! I think someone here claimed a few weeks ago that the ratings were poor, but apparently they're excellent.

Fantastic, it didn't feel like there would be a satisfying way to wrap things up in the season finale, great to hear we will get more next season. :)

This show is hit or miss for me. It can be boring, but when they bring in the more modern Superman stuff, it isn't.

I don't like that Zod is now Superman's uncle. That was ridiculous.

But I do like that Zod isn't entirely wrong here.

I would assume that Zod's motives are different than what we are seeing, because if not, then we are seeing a version of Zod that actually has a fair point.

He obviously has Superman all wrong. But the real question is--how do you react if you are a Kryptonian?

You almost have to side with Zod.

Brainiac is going to steal Kandor and shrink it. While I don't like that Kandor's theft is what causes Krypton to explode in this universe, let's go with it since we have to.

If Brainiac is stopped, Superman never exists. At best, you will have Kal-El living his life on Krypton, period.

If someone told you that your future grandson would be the greatest hero in the universe, you would be proud. But if that same person told you that everyone on your planet has to die to make that happen, you might not care so much about the hero, and try to save billions of lives.

I would. Picture it happening here.

I would even think SUPERMAN would side with saving Krypton, even if it meant his own existence.

    Theory.

    The Cataclysm.

Whatever the #### happened to the environment that reduced Krypton's population from billions to thousands.

Without help from a computer taking note, inbreeding is almost a certainty over a long enough timeline with a small enough sampling of genetic diversity.

    Caretakers.

Waiting for Krypton to recover from the Cataclysm, when it is safe to grow back into billions of Kryptonians, they will expand their numbers, and then anyone can frak anyone, without a lot of care about near incest.

    Alternative theory.

The population is low because Kryptonian lifespans "seem" to be 4 to 6 times longer than a human beings.

    Less turnover.

    Alternative theory.

Kryptonians are contiguously contraceived, or outright sterilized, so that the population can be managed sans surprises.

    Alternative theory.

The ranked, are a list of genetic samples (people/families) worth controlling.

The Unranked are not on the list of families worth forecasting and manipulating into a master race of ubermensch, so their junk probably works, unless they are drones.

Very far from excellent. Similar to those of the expanse, with a slightly higher demo. I think it's cheaper to make so it got to survive.

Whoa... Imagine how frustrating it would be if Syfy hadn't renewed the show and we were left with that cliffhanger.

Once Brainiac was in the Fortress, I thought it was going to turn out to have been Zod's idea all along to lure him into the Phantom Zone. So I anticipated what the solution was, but not who was behind it. I guess it did have to be Seg who saved the day -- although in so doing, he may have lost the future. We've gone from a timeline where Krypton would live on peacefully for another 200 years and leave Superman as its legacy to one where it's conquered by General Zod in a single month and on the verge of becoming a galactic menace.

I don't get how the temporal logic plays out, though. How does Superman's cape get restored by Seg being lost in the Phantom Zone? There's no way he'd even be conceived without his grandfather around to produce his father. Unless it turns out that the fetus Kor-Vex gets renamed Jor-El.

And did Adam get sucked into the future? It looked like he was on Earth, and an Earth that had been conquered by Zod, so it must be in the future -- but he was in one of Brainiac's bottle cities, and Brainiac was defeated in the present. So does Zod end up using Brainiac's ship and its bottle technology for his own conquests?

And what was the deal with that whole business about Nyssa turning out to be a clone? That was a weird digression that didn't seem to have anything to do with the story. I guess it's setting up a season 2 arc, but it felt like an intrusion here.

I was confused by that at first too, but on reflection, I think the restoration of the cape and the changing of its crest might have all been one process. The pause in between makes it seem like two separate events, but I think that may have been for dramatic effect. We're cued to think Superman has been restored somehow, but then realize the future has been changed such that the cape is now Zod's. (Or something like that -- tune in next season!)

Pretty good finale. The FX shots of Brainiac's ship over Kandor and its massive tentacles reaching down were suitably impressive, and made the show feel a little less cramped and claustrophobic than usual.

Atypically, I actually wished we spent more time with Adam Strange, just because his current situation is so intriguing. The trapped and frozen populace around him is suitably eerie, and it was obvious something pretty peculiar was going on temporally even before the statue of Zod appeared; this was clearly a modern Earth city, but the show is set 200 years in the past, so how would Brainiac have acquired it? I'm sure the showrunners are well aware of these mysteries and contradictions and have answers up their sleeves, so again -- tune in next season!

I've only seen the first episode, meant to binge the rest but I hear the ending's a cliffhanger, so without being too spoilery, what kind of a cliffhanger is it?

Is it "most plot threads resolved" or more "everything up in the air" type.
Cause if it's the latter, I'll just wait till Season 2.

It was alright. Brainiac looked like a mix of a Borg and Kryton. I preferred his pilot look better.
