Immigration on Federation Earth and the Sol system

Why only as diverse as the USA? Why not as diverse as actually diverse nations?
As of 2016 the USA is 23% nonwhite and 77% White, for Japan to have a 23% nonwhite Japanese population would probably take 200 years, and would be a major cultural shift. In the present century Japan is 99% Japanese, and has no intention of changing that.
In the Star Trek universe it takes a lot of major cultural shifts, aka First Contact for all of humanity to get its act together.

Malcolm Reed's parents lived in Malaysia, so there is some established precedent for increasing diversity in Asian countries by the 22nd century. I'd imagine Japan would be in generally a similar state.

True but it would take time to go from 1% diverse to US or British levels

Curious topic, the hang ups I see are what we are told in TNG and DS9.

TNG: Picard stated there is no monetary economy. That people work to better themselves or pursue their passions.

DS9: Sisko stated that Earth was a Paradise and that all the problems had been solved.

What TNG and DS9 shared, were run in with the Maqui. Feddie citizens who wanted to continue to live on the border of a hostile power (the Cardassians), in the DMZ. Despite the Federation being made up of hundreds of worlds, not everyone wanted to live there. Despite Earth having all the comforts that could be found anywhere else in the galaxy.

I imagine Federation citizenry allows free movements to any world or colony in the Fed.

Sulu, of Japanese heritage, was born in San Francisco, for whatever that's worth.

It is interesting to speculate about what kind of major event(s) would cause a society like Japan to have such a major cultural shift. From what I have read, some Japanese policy makers (in the real world) are looking, not at immigration, but at artificial intelligence robots and the like to help deal with the problems that come their declining and ageing population.

Maybe in theory. I would guess that there would be worlds that are more open or closed than others, regarding allowing non natives to permanently reside on their planet. These places could put up non-official barriers, if not outright official barriers, that would discourage non natives from moving into their world. I doubt the Tellarites would be happy to have a Vulcan or an Andorian move next door and vice versa.

^ There are a plurality of habitable planets and moons to set up colonies. Or, the Feddies can just build space stations to house people. Like Yorktown or K-7.

Assuming that Star Trek Earth is close enough to our real present, a major, global, nuclear war wiping out most of your population and A.I would be a major cultural shift for Japan. A United Earth government might be federalised and allow for cultural differences, but would it pander to local immigration policies based on old racial/ethnic politics? I believe a fictional Japan in the Star trek universe would more diverse than it is now in RL.
As for Sulu the USA has a Japanese diaspora (along with many others) since the 19th century, so no surprise that Sulu is born there.

Yeah I doubt an open border policy would work due to differences in species, logical Vulcans would not allow just anyone to come and live on their planets, without a logical reason for migrating. I bet they are the least diverse humanoid planet in the Federation lol And since Earth is the HQ of the Federation its probably one of the most diverse planets, if it not number one. Did not Riker say in a VOY episode, that Earth was home to billions of other species apart from humans?

Is that entirely in fitting though with the species which invented IDIC?

yep How many Vulcans practised what they preached? I say two, Kov and T'Pol.

Consider RL people who follow a religion e.g Christianity how many really follow the teachings of Christ? When I hear US Presidents say 'God bless America', it makes me want to vomit. In the UK our monarchs are automatic heads of the Anglican church, their bishops used to bless the slave ships before they left African ports for the West. Yeah Christiandom's history is violent and bloody and its based on love your neighbour as yourself. The irony!
(rant over)

True, however, the Japanese have not immigrated in high numbers to the U.S. since the early 20th century, and have integrated to a large degree. IIRC from the last Pew survey I saw it's very rare to find a third-generation Japanese-American who isn't biracial today. Therefore I'd guess Sulu is the descendant of more recent Asian immigrants to San Francisco.

O.K interesting, although in the novel of the Voyage home, the crew met an American Japanese little boy who was meant to be his ancestor. Too corny for words!
So it makes more sense that Sulu's folks are migrants from the United Earth generation or descendants from folks who did not integrate that much, it only takes a few generations to get the Japanese ethnicity back in the family lol

That's what I see in my boyfriend's Japanese family.
In his parents era, pretty much There was no interracial marriages. But that included Blacks, and others.
Interracial used to have a different meaning too. Different races used to be, for example Germans and Italians.
However his nieces and 2nd cousins etc now are grown up and getting married and there is no one race thing involved.
But even in his age group the race thing was pretty much gone too.
A lot of his cousins have """"mixed""" marriages and children.

I always find it comical when they have
It like, Ensign Chan- looks Chinese,
Crewman Martinez-looks Hispanic,
I would love to have seen Ensign Chan be a skinny, black lady, Crewman Martinez be a husky blond haired blue eyed man.
Race us way over rated in the world today.
Substance over race should be the norm.
