Casting Pike's Number One

I'm going with a no, on that.

To be fair, they made Doctor #1 pretty chauvinistic in the recent x-mas special. I never saw more than one or two of Hartnell's episodes, so I don't know how accurate that portrayal was. But clearly they were trying to recreate the character as seen back in the 60's.

I'm thinking They might put a bit of that into the Pike character, but we're going to also get a specific reason why he feels that way and probably also see his attitude become adjusted during his story arc.

I can see it having something to do with the specific character of "Number One" and not his overall inclination toward women in general.

Some things are better left in the past. There's enough sexism in real life and among fandom to go around; no need for Pike to spout it just to match up with a throwaway line from 53 years ago.

Amen. I'd be perfectly happy to sweep that under the rug simply because it hasn't aged well. Not every line in every episode has to be treated as Holy Writ. And, yes, I'm looking at you too, "Turnabout Intruder."

There are times when common sense and changing values trump absolute fidelity to the sacred "canon."

Is there a chance that "Number One" might become captain of the USS Discovery? If so that you need someone for at least a season long commitment (assuming USS Discovery has a revolving door for the captain's chair without keeping Saru or Burman in it for the rest of the show).

Then they would have to give the character a name, thereby ruining some of the mystery.

On another thread, I jokingly wrote Hayley Atwell as my choice for Number One just because I'd marry her as soon as tomorrow if that was a possibility (although a restraining order is more likely). But then I got to thinking about it, and I actually think she would be a solid choice for the part. I've seen some of her stuff beyond Captain America, she's pretty good in the acting department. And she just did a Starz limited series (which I think might have been a BBC thing, or something British), so it's not like it isn't in the realm of possibility to get her on the Enterprise.

Maybe she's so stoic and logical by choice because she does tend to have a more aggressive temperament due to her genetic engineering. That would make for a much more interesting character in my view.
She's constantly at odds with her inner-self and uses Vulcan techniques to retain her composure.
Imagine the discussions she could have with Burnham over the incident in the pilot!
Internally she would probably agree with Burnham's actions, but externally she would see the folly of said actions.
Now there's real character conflict!
I can see her avoiding interpersonal relationships with the crew and keeping to herself most of the time when not on duty.
Would even be interesting to see Captain Pike be aware of her inner turmoil and have purposely promoted her to the bridge to keep an eye on her and also occasionally test her mettle by goading her on.

So many ways to go with a character like that I can't even list them all here.

That's uncanny. I also had that idea for her character. She could have a lot of self-hatred, because she feels trapped by her nature and the life it denies her. She would always fear losing control and becoming like the other Augments. Though she loves her enhanced abilities, more often than not she wishes she was normal.

So if Pike was originally racist instead of sexist, and didn’t like it when black crewmembers were on the bridge, would you think that DSC would keep that aspect of his character?
Well it would certainly be spot on with how many African American's feel they are still being treated now-a-days.
It would also be a very bold statement about our life & times, that not very many other shows are willing to deal with.
'Character flaws' and their consequences are what make for interesting television.

BTW: I'm not saying that Pike should be an all out "sexist", but it is the nature of humans to have internal struggles with our perceptions and attitudes that we develop through our lifetimes.
And since we really don't know the "in-universe" context of why Pike made that comment (obviously it's a 60s' mentality thing), it could even be as I described earlier...

Perhaps there's something with the character of "Number One" that Pike is constantly testing with his comments and he's not really a horrid human being after all.

I'll throw out two names:

Priyanka Chopra - now that Quantico has been axed, she is available and would add more ethnic diversity to the cast.
Sarah Shahi - currently starring in a show called REVERIE, which by all accounts is awful and won't be picked up after it's summer run. Versatile actress, right age, has played lots of tough, no-nonsense characters and can do a little comedy as well.

They could try to redeem Pike, and have him being paternalist, because he cares for Number One. Perhaps she had a bad experience on a previous away mission?

I can see the opportunity to have him be an example of the worst of today's humanity though, to make a point. But if the Enterprise is so respected, would they want the audience to think badly of it's Captain?

Either way, the way she was treated may hasten her decision to accept the Captaincy of the Discovery? (Fingers crossed)

It wasn’t very. But he supposedly mid regeneration pause. There’s plenty on the net about precisely why that portrayal was off key, and a bit of artistic license to make some kind of point.

If I had to choose between the two I would go with Shahi. Not that I dislike Chopra, but Quantico and Baywatch were...just awful.

I still like the suggestions of Bridget Regan and Haley Atwell too.
