Ridiculously large ships

If the official specs are to be believed the JJprise is 725 M long (which is longer than a Galaxy class ship by the way.) and the Vengeance is about 2-3 times as long that means its longer than the prime timelines Enterprise (1701-F) from 2409 1 and 1/2 centuries later. How can Starfleet in the 23 century possibly have the resources to support a fleet of ships this size?

Because they have infinite clean energy?

Including the Prime Universe, where 750m ships are the norm 10 years prior to TOS.

 

Size does not equal technological advancement. No reason star fleet can't decide to build one 700 meter ship instead of two 350 meter ones (which is about the size of modern aircraft carrier)

 

Why can't they? Just because they haven't done it before doesn't indicate a lack of capability.

 

Considering they were able to build Yorktown, building the E almost seems like child's play by comparison.

Minerals in the asteroid belt would be more than enough to build a massive fleet of ship at that size (750m).

As far as ships getting smaller? Technology shrinks as it evolves. The same size ship in 2254 holds 200 crew, then 430 in 2265.

 

what do we even consider to be ridiculous in a universe with the kinds of technological and biological miracles as the star trek universe of any timeline, anyway?

 

If there's something we don't like, we declare it ridiculous. Or an obscenity. Some may say it violates Gene's Vision, but you need to believe in such a thing for that to work.

It's not the size of the Starship, but the efficiency of your warp core.....

 

I can't see how it possibly can matter since ship size is never brought up in the narrative of the story. It's not like they're 5 miles long. Trek fans are just pedants in the extreme. Viewscreen windows being the most ridiculous complaint of all time.

I couldn't give a toss how big a particular ship is, what bothers me is when they're not in scale with each other. They could say the DS9 Defiant is a mile long if they like, as long as all other ships are in scale. Pulls me right out of it when they muck stuff like that up.

 

You must get pulled right out of Star Trek a lot.
