New animated show announced... Star Wars: Resistance

Yeah you are probably right, and this lack of a need for a connection to the films is also evident when you see Rebels in its entirety. Spoilers: Rebels and Rogue One
There is never a really huge crossover event linking Rebels to Rogue One. Just a few cosmetic links like Saw Guererra, U-Wings, name dropping Stardust/Death Star, Death Troopers, etc.

At the time Rebels was airing it seemed like such a safe assumption. The end of Rebels season 4 should be almost to the point that Rogue One happens by a few months or so.

I don't think it's that they couldn't link to Rogue One (since that story was already complete by that point, so they didn't have to worry about spoiling or contradicting anything). It's more that they decided not to, because bringing their own story to its natural climax was more important than playing connect-the-dots. That, plus the fact that the character and story arcs they'd introduced needed to be wrapped up before Rogue One/A New Hope to explain why they weren't factors during the OT.

This is terrific news. Dave Filoni seems like the one guy who really understands what Star Wars should be nowadays, and Poe Dameron is my favorite new character. Perfect match. Would be a bit strange if there isn't any Jedi content in a Star Wars story, but...couldn't Luke and Kylo's backstory be part of this series? If there's one guy who can make sense of that mishmash, it's Filoni. Let him explain how it all makes perfect sense and neither Luke nor Kylo were either dumb or being a puppet of the Force.

I think it'd be a refreshing change of pace. And it won't be the first time, since there doesn't seem to be a Jedi character in Solo. (Han seemed to see the Jedi as a remote myth when he met Obi-Wan, so it's unlikely he had any prior encounters with them.)

People always say this in discussions regarding the Anthology movies, but the thing is the old Legends continuity covered many aspects of the Star Wars universe with had nothing to do with Jedi, Sith, or the Force. Fans embraced these stories just as much as they did Force-related stuff.

It is admittedly a surprise move for Filoni, who really seemed to enjoy exploring Force mythology and mysticism in Clone Wars and Rebels, but that's all it is, surprising, not strange.

Not likely. It's been said this series is supposed to be concurrent with the Poe Dameron comic series which is definitely set after Luke's disappearance.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ahsoka, Ezra, and Sabine showed up at some point in the second season or so.

Also, wasn't it suggested or speculated that this show might allow developing Lor San Tekka and explaining his backstory? From what little we saw of him in TFA, he seemed to be pretty much a true believer in the Jedi and the Force, even though he wasn't a practitioner himself.

Hera and Kanan's son could easily show up

The Poe Dameron comic has done a bit with Lor San Tekka.

So how far into production would they actually be on this now? I know some of these kinds of animated shows will start production a year or more before it actually airs. Didn't Filoni hint that they were already getting started on this before Rebels even finished?

Probably 2 years for the writing, a year for the actual production.

With it airing in the fall, I'd guess they likely have most of the first season in the can. At the very least, all the voice work for the season's likely already recorded.

To be honest I agree, the Star Wars universe is notable for the scale and variety of aliens and cultures seen in passing whilst we focus on the dramas and internal turmoil of the Jedi. It would be good to expand on some of that colour and richness.

Do I see a Stormtrooper in red armour? Does that mean we're going to get Cardinal from the Phasma novel?

Through it would have been effectively 40 years or more, I wonder if any of the member of the old Cloud-Riders (Enfys Nest's group) could show up?

Looks like TIE Pilot armour to me.

Looking forward to this. If they have no Jedi in it that is fine. The Star Wars universe is pretty large and there are plenty of stories that can be told without involving the Jedi full time.

Knowing this fandom, they’d complain there wasn’t enough Jedi. The movies can’t be influenced by the old ones and they can’t try to go into a new direction. I’m not sure what they want, except maybe no more movies. I’m not sure how that even makes them fans. I have the same attitude about Trek fans too.
