I was thinking about Coulson's condition and his manifested fear, and realized that what they're potentially doing here is sort of the same thing that tie-in products sometimes have to do (e.g., DC's Star Trek comic in the '80s having to put everything back the way it was at the end of STIII before STIV came out)...the series is effectively putting Phil Coulson back the way they found him (dead from the wound inflicted by Loki), such that, in the unlikely event that the films should ever wish to touch upon the final fate of Phil Coulson again, they can pretty much ignore that the show ever happened. In that sense, Coulson's fear was very meta...that the events of the show never happened.
