Agents of SHIELD season 5

I was thinking about Coulson's condition and his manifested fear, and realized that what they're potentially doing here is sort of the same thing that tie-in products sometimes have to do (e.g., DC's Star Trek comic in the '80s having to put everything back the way it was at the end of STIII before STIV came out)...the series is effectively putting Phil Coulson back the way they found him (dead from the wound inflicted by Loki), such that, in the unlikely event that the films should ever wish to touch upon the final fate of Phil Coulson again, they can pretty much ignore that the show ever happened. In that sense, Coulson's fear was very meta...that the events of the show never happened.
 
The years have been kind to Jake Busey. Not too much to say as this is one of those episodes that's not filler but is mainly setting the pieces in motion for future payoff.
 
It looks like these final 10 episodes (let's be honest with ourselves) are going to draw upon the entire history of the show. This week had Gravitonium, Cybertek, Wernher von Strucker, name drops of John Garrett, Ian Quinn and Raina. Last week we got Deathlok, Hive and Lash.
 
A largely eh episode, aside from great one-liners from Mack and Phil as always. I don't really care about Werner von Strucker (certainly didn't the first time around), but his recruitment leads credence (no pun intended) to the idea of Hale building a supervillain team. Who else is still alive in the show's universe that could join the team?

The Scrappy Doo comparison to Deke is spot-on (even if I'm one of the few people who doesn't mind Scrappy) and his whole puppy dog act has worn beyond thin. And that now he knows Jemma and Leo are his grandparents (thanks to super coincidental line dropping, but whatever), he's I know he's about to get so much worse.

I know I've been harping a lot about Deke this season, but he really annoys me. I realized during this episode (partially due to all of the name dropping) that this show has always curated one grating character (at least from my perspective) since the beginning. First it was Ward, then Lincoln, and now Deke. I guess season 4 is the exception, but otherwise that holds up and that's rather disappointing. It's not a big deal, but it is irritating and prevents the show from being truly great for me.

Yeah, you're right. In a small way, as much as I hate to see the show go, this seems like the most natural way to end the show and it would probably be best to end after this season, especially if they're writing the finale as the series ender.

Sometimes I suspect shows like this are under network pressure to include a handsome young white male lead no matter what, which is why the handsome young white male leads are often the most uninteresting or unnecessary characters. (Though Deke is nowhere near as much of a Scrappy as someone like Sleepy Hollow season 2's much-hated Hawley.)
 
Who was the guy Hale recruited? It was pretty clear he was someone we've seen before, but I can't remember him.
It was pretty cool getting to learn a bit more about Mack's history.
Looks like Yo-Yo will be getting her comics accurate robot arms.
My feeling right now is that the season will end with Coulson dying, and if it comes back either Daisy will take over as leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. or they'll find a way to resurrect Coulson again.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised. It's irritating (but expected) that network studios still think they know best how to structure shows.

Werner von Strucker, the baron's son, as seen in season 3.

I honestly couldn't remember either until I looked him up on IMDb. Of course, that was before the episode directly referenced his identity .

Which one? The big muscular guy she recruited in an earlier episode, the one lifting weights here, is Carl "Crusher" Creel, the Absorbing Man -- originally seen as a villain, then as a member of Glenn Talbot's security detail, so he's played both sides. The younger man who was "seduced" by Ruby in this episode is Werner von Strucker, the son of Wolfgang von Strucker from Age of Ultron. (In the comics, he's the brother of the Fenris twins, Andreas and Andrea von Strucker, who are the grandfather and great-aunt of Reed Strucker from The Gifted in a different TV universe.)

Hale has the gravitonium, which means she has Graviton.

Shades of that handsome young white male fighter pilot that jms was forced to include in a season of Babylon 5. Not only did viewers hate the character, but the other actors hated the actor, and jms had him horribly and satisfyingly killed in the season finale. :lol:

Also, in the episode where they stole the van, they then proceed to go through a litany of their adventures starting from season 1 through season 4. It is a litte sad and it appears it will get sadder before it's over.

Jake REALLY looks like a young version of his father in this one. Hopefully we will see him again.

Who was the co-pilot that, when Busey asked about "Does this happen all the time", that pilot also acted liek it happens all the time.

I hope that when they show Daisy as chief, that it is a coda form the future. i would really hate to see Coulson die,though.

And totally with you on who the guy was, and about Mack Hammer's history.


One of the things i will miss on the show on how natural the dialogue is, especially all the jokes. Some seemed liek the writers also watch what the fans write.... we all have called them Fitz-simmons, but in awareness, saying how silly a hyphenated name sounds -- Simmons-Fitz ! And jokes like yo yo feeling stumped, "Can't touch this" (too bad they missed "2 Legit 2 Quit")... and the group joking with Mack and his youth....that felt so very natural...like when they reminiced about Trip right after he died

So will the finale be like it's own Infinity War -- everyone from their past in the finale? It would be a great way to end the series, and we have said about the other references...but i would love ot see another season myself. How have the ratings been?
 
If the Son of Coul doesn't end up being shown in Valhalla after Thor restores it, arm-wrestling Volstagg for the next bite of boar meat whilst sharing tales of heroes with Fandral, then this series is dead to me.

They referred to the two of them collectively as Fitzsimmons on the show throughout the first season, and occasionally since then. Like, to the point we were pretty deep into year two before I was confident I knew which one was which.

Fitzsimmons is an actual name. A whole group of names begin with "Fitz". Common in Ireland and places with a large Irish immigrant population .
