No more effort than a typical noseridge alien from TNG, tho. Hardly the overdone makeup you see on Discovery.
While I realize the Caucasian-toned Klingons in TOS were probably due to accidental omission of the swarthy makeup, what's wrong with the concept of an alien race with a broad range of skin colors? Certainly in the years since TOS Klingons have been portrayed by humans of varying skin colors, with makeup sometimes matching the actors and sometimes not. I believe that in the total body of Trek, Klingons - while averaging somewhat darker than humans - exhibit the same range of colors as humans.
What's honorable about Klingons??? I mean Worf, as low in the IQ he was, was an honorable character, but the rest of the bunch? There are few with honor than the whole. Is having a cloaking device honorable in all that honorable blather they jibe about? Klingons are bastards, always have been, and when they say the word "honor" it's more to the form of people in California who say "Like" or Uhm before and during a conversation.

There is frequent talks about how TNG Klingons are honourable and so not just cardboard cut out bad guys like they are in TOS. But, really, are they?
In TOS they were sneaky, crafty, expantionistic and sometimes charming and philisophical.
In TNG they have just reverted to barbarianism and idiocy. They growl about honour but display none. They dont look like they could organise a "piss up in a brewery" , let alone run a star spanning empire.
We have swapped one cardboard cut out stereotype for another.
Then of course there is Ford's vision which extrapolates from TOS and, imho, makes the best, most realistic and interesting Klingons of all. Just as sneaky, charming and expantionistic, but given a rational reason to be that.
Still bastards, but in large part, because of their biology, society and psychology.

They were honourable in TOS as well! Except for Kras, who showed us that even Klingons have the odd coward here and there and that no race is perfect!

I must admit that I never saw TOS Klingons as honourable, at least not by human standards. Grain poisoning and prisoner tourturing isnt too honourable in my book.
But, for me, Ford explained why Klingons behave as they do, and the impact of the whole Komerex-Khesterex dichotomy at the core of their psychology and society.
Torture may not be admitted to by the so called civilized countries that we live in now so maybe the Klingons aren't so bad and maybe a lot of that is Federation propaganda but it does go on and although Chekov does receive the agonizer from Klingons in Day of The Dove, Kang himself is a Klingon commander with a sense of honour as such! Especially in his scenes at the end where he and Kirk come to an understanding over the alien's influence over their crews!

I am actually a huge fan of TOS (and Ford extrapolated) Klingons and have some sympathy for the bad press that they get. I cannot agree with their more violent actions but understanding is not necessarily forgiving.

Yeah, they basically switched the characterizations of the Klingons and the Romulans around for TNG. (Heck, even earlier -- STIII.) Suddenly, the Klingons were the honorable ones and the Romulans were the duplicitous, scheming, mustache-twirling bad guys. On TOS, it was the reverse.
I think it's because they originally wrote the bad guys as Romulans in STIII and they didn't make many adjustments to the script when they decided to make them Klingons instead. That's also how come the Klingons were suddenly flying Birds of Prey. And honorable Klingons also fit better with having a Klingon be in Starfleet, of course.
There could be an interesting story in how the two races basically switched characteristics between the 23rd and 24th centuries.

The TOS Klingons may not have had ridges but they did have cool looking uniforms. The tops had a nice metallic sheen. Like their foreheads, it was relatively simple and elegant. It wasn't overly complex as it was with their TNG Klingon counterparts with their bulky armor and ungainly forehead ridges.

Totally but although they growl about honour all the time they fail to practise any. The TNG+ Klingons are really more about "face" than honour. Bikergang-viking-samuri's who growl posture and bang heads is all they amount to.Which really annoyeld me. Klingons had no honor; they were thugs. Suddenly it's honor this and honor that.
How on earth they rule and maintain a multispecies, tens of parsecs wide Empire is a total mystery to me.
Ford's vision is a million times more realistic and interesting, a Komerex that could really challenge the Feds.
I think the Klingons started flying Birds of Prey because the writers of Search For Spock originally wanted the Romulans as that film's baddie but someone stated that the Klingons were much better known and inserted them instead! And we know from the original series that both Empires collaborated at one time or another!

That's a common misconception that has recently been debunked in an interview with one of the guys who actually worked on TAS.
