Does it annoy anyone else that people expect you to be hardcore liberal if you're a Trekkie

What the hell is a hardcore liberal? Who uses a silly space opera as a political litmus test? What kind of hurt makes someone create a thread about this fantasy?

There are those on both sides that do it :(

Gonna have to play the NOPE card here.

If someone calling themself a liberal tried to deny someone basic human rights, they would not, I fact, be a liberal. Liberals by definition are interested in everyone having the same freedoms and liberties, in everyone being equal in the eyes of the law, in the workplace, in society.

Care to try again?

I'm conservative, but what I like about Star Trek besides the sci fi aspect and so on is that I do think in the future the world will be a lot more like that. I just believe right now we aren't ready for peace (or liberal ideology), and peace that is being shoved down our throats. Let it come gradually, else we're going to have to wait longer for those peaceful times to come.

I like the science fiction aspect the most, however it also shows how various ideologies fail...

I wouldn't want to offend so am taking the higher ground :)
You aren't taking the higher ground. You deliberately lobbed a grenade into the mix to provoke a problem with no intention of ever discussing the subject seriously, and then when you're called on it you evaded the question and pretended to be above it all. You do this constantly. Stop it.

And for the broader discussion, if we intend to keep this topic open, it should probably stick to the subject matter of the OP rather than become a liberal versus conservative pissing match that doesn't even mention people's political expectations of Trekkies.

I'm curious about the "peace being shoved down our throats". What do you mean by it? It's a not uncommon theme in Star Trek that the federation is a little too over reaching and varying cultures resist this. It's all a little nebulous on screen though, what does the planet (sheesh, an entire planet..) get out of being in the Federation? Now Bajor got protection but I assume one thing it brings is trade agreements. But I could see that a planet like Ferenginar would feel it involves giving up too much of their own culture to meet Federation standards.

I've opened a can of worms here lol.

I'm mostly talking about online, specifically social media. Basically my views lean a little to the conservative side, economically more than socially which means I'm against overly generous welfare and boob jobs on the NHS. Basically when I speak of these views people always comment with things like 'I thought you were a Star Trek fan' as if that automatically makes me a left winger.

That's what I mean,

How would you class "overly generous welfare"? Sometimes people struggle and need help from the state, the fact that uptake in food banks has sky-rocketed of late is proof that people are struggling. One local authority in Scotland is looking at providing free meals to school aged children 365 days a year so that parents don't go hungry for the benefit of their kids.

As for boob jobs on the NHS, women with overly large breasts are plagued by numerous health problems and probably a number of social concerns as well which may have a detrimental affect on their mental health, is a reduction on the NHS can save on future costs for muscular-skeletal issues in later life, depression or anxiety, then it makes sense to give them something that will make them better off in the future.

Of course saying that all Trek fans are leftists is the same as saying all 'gays' are effeminate or numerous other blanket statements that are unfounded. It takes all sorts and whilst I may not agree with someone on their political leanings I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand entirely--not unless of course they were a total dick.

I understand economic conservatism up to a point, though I strongly doubt there are many boob jobs on the NHS.

Though I would say this. The government of Australia has had the following Prime Ministers and their Govts, in this order:

Labor - Left progressive
Liberal-National Party (LNJP - Right conservative

Malcolm Fraser LNP
In office: 1975-1983

Bob Hawke/Paul Keating Labor
In office: 1983–1996

John Howard LNP
In office: 1996–2007

Kevin Rudd/Julia Gillard Labor
In office: 2007–2013

Tony Abbott/Malcolm Turnbull LNP
In office: 2013–

In relation to this, under Howard we experienced a HUGE mining boom, so the Government was getting staggering amounts of tax... which they still managed to squander.

And Abbott, as Opposition Leader against Rudd/Gillard, complained bitterly when the national debt was $300bn. Abbott and Turnbull have now raised that to $500bn, when they promised, as a conservative govt, to reduce it. They have done no such thing.

In short, conservative governments aren't necessarily the great money managers they say they are. America could do worse than to consider leaning a little more to the left. Be a little closer to true democracy, rather than the current oligarchy.

I suspect NHS boob jobs would be reductions, as already explained people are fucked at 25 from the weight at times and reconstructions after masectomies. If someone had a problem with they are a horrible person.

We all have "too far" points with welfare, whatever. We still need societies that err on the side of caring for people. When you make them have to fit into a narrow worthiness category this becomes counter-care.

I’m talking cosmetic boob jobs, and yes it does happen.

Food banks are used more now because the Tories lifted Labours ban on advertising them, also the job centre can refer you now when only a doctor could before.

Okay show us some proof of the cosmetic boob job for free.

As to the rest of it so? Why should you go to a doctor to be allowed to go to a food bank?

In aus they are open to anyone, just come and get the food.
