Jonathan Harris's Smith was less hammy in the first few episodes than he became later on. I've often thought that Harris in the opening story arc was basically playing Iago from Othello.

If that's the Robot in the first shot with the claw like hand then does it seems that it assumes a humanoid shape to assimilate in with the group maybe? In fact that first shot reminds me of the transformed Smith in the Lost in Space movie.
I was more disappointed in the lack of any affectation in Parker Posey's Smith. I don't need TV Smith but that's a part where an actor should be able to ham it up in some fashion.
I love the "explore strange new worlds" factor, that is something I've been missing in modern sci-fi. Discovery passingly gave us a couple of new worlds and aliens but I've been missing that element. Overall, I liked it and am looking forward to seeing the series.
Easy solution: Just recast Gary Oldman! The man already has his Oscar - I'm sure he'd be willing to work for free now.

I think they successfully remade the original 1965 series plus elements of the 1998 film, 2004 WB tv pilot and the Earth 2(1994-95) NBC series. I am as excited or, maybe 
, more excited than Star Trek : Discovery debut last year.
Looks like fun. I didn't watch the original show and only mostly for Bill Mumy and Angela Cartwright, so I don't care one way or the other about any changes. While I agree making the robot more humanoid is a bit disappointing, I like the idea of it being an alien creation that Will adopts and teaches. Far better than an obnoxious robot that follows him around all over the place, stating the obvious and being generally useless.
I don't think that's a fair or accurate characterization of the original LiS Robot in any way. I suppose some might find the Robot's increasing turn over time toward being written humorously and anthropomorphically to be tiresome, but the personality of the Robot wasn't portrayed as obnoxious per se, certainly not in the way that Dr. Smith was. He didn't specifically follow Will everywhere, but was as often paired with Smith, though in seasons 2-3 it was all three characters who were the primary focus of the show. The Robot's statements were frequently vital exposition of things that the characters couldn't possibly have known any other way (and sometimes it was unclear how even the Robot's sensors could've detected them), so they were far from obvious. And far from being generally useless, the Robot was, if anything, far too indispensable and overpowered, routinely saving the day.
I think that was just as often used when the danger was not apparent and the Robot was the first to alert them. If anything, I think he was sometimes written as if he had a spider-sense, as if his sensors were specifically attuned to sniff out approaching or potential dangers. And it's very, very far from the only thing the Robot said. The frequency of catchphrases tends to be blown way out of proportion in public perception (often to the point that a phrase the character never quite used is manufactured, like "Elementary, my dear Watson" and "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor..." etc.).
Thank you, I was thinking it seemed vaguely familar, but I couldn't figure out where from. I love Titan A.E., I really think it's underrated when it comes to both animated, and sci-fi movies.

Okay, that was immature of me, but please keep in mind I'm just being silly. I hold no real ill will against this new adaptation. The absurd image popped inside my head and I just had to "realize" it for the "shiggles".

and they give the production a decent budget and the means to fully realize their 'vision'. This looks expensive, not done on a shoe-string budget on some studio back lot. If other Netflix original productions are a guide post, this looks in the 7 - 8 million and episode ballpark.

I was thinking it reminded me of the robot AMEE from Red Planet, but that works too!
