Who should be the antagonist for season 2?

God should be the villain.

If they're going the religion route. They discover God (pun intended), and then we can stoke up some True Holy Canon Wars. Medieval Style. Unfortunately, with this change, moderation will also become medieval.

I know, serialization can happen in sub plots while the episodes main plots are adventures of the week or maybe mini arcs of 2 or 3 episodes. Antagonists can show up ther, the series doesn't necessarily need a season long antagonist.
That really worked well in Season 4, of ENT. made for a good story and it did not get tiresome.

Ultimately at the highest levels, how could Starfleet not be aware that Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcans? Had Season 5 of Enterprise happened, it's pretty obvious some would've become aware of it and had to keep quiet... for the sake of a fledgling Federation. Humanity already had an uneasy relationship with Vulcans in Archer's day. Plus there is Terra Prime, recruitment for which would go through the roof, if it became known all our setbacks were the result of a Vulcan High Command covertly controlled by the enemy.

It's a bit shocking that a United Federation of Planets of tens, probably hundreds, of billions of people with ships travelling all over the quadrant would have never met anyone who had space-instagrammed a photo of a Romulan. But that's really TOS's problem. Enterprise handled it pretty well considering. And with the secret Romulans living on Vulcan, it even provided a semi-explanation to how Starfleet never got photographic images of Romulans – they couldn't verify them as such, and filed them under OK-maybe-Vulcan.

Part of me wants to say, "They're so close to TOS anyway, why not just skip the rest of the nine years and get out of Prequel Territory once and for all?"

But I only really want to see the Romulans if they can pull off something like "Balance of Terror", "The Enterprise Incident", or TNG's "Face of the Enemy". It should be a Big Deal with all that it entails. Not, "Oh, it's the Romluans again!" The Klingons are the go-to's but you pull out the Romulans for the Special Occasions. I like that on TOS they weren't overused.

I know, different time and differemt place but TNG did quite well without a main protagonist. Honestly if the Orvill didn't have the krill it would be just as fine of a show, in fact the Krill episodes were my least favorite

Except Voyager took the TNG formula and ran it into the ground, to the point that I do not want refried TNG again, Star Trek should move past 1987.

I think you tell Star Trek stories in a modern TV series, it just takes some work, but that would be better then trying to recreate a show from the 80s.

I'd be down for multiple antagonists across the season.

Perhaps we could get arcs with Tholians or Kzinti and maybe the Romulans manipulating things behind the scenes by using a proxy race to cause problems for the federation. I'd also want to see some new never before seen races as antagonists, like the Kelpien Predator race. With Kelpiens being rare perhaps they start looking for other sources of food and run afoul of the Federation.

Also I'd like to see Mudd, Georgiou, the Orions again as well preferably all allied to cause trouble for Discovery.

You aren't wrong but I'm not talking about telling tng style stories, just the possibility that you don't need constant serialized storylines.

I surely don't wanna go backards like... tng backwards.

Except Voyager killed my interest in episodic Star Trek. I am done with planet of the week stories, where we never see those planets again.

I want to see exploration that goes beyond one week, where these discovered worlds are developed and these alien civilizations either join the Federation or another power. Villains trying to use diplomacy to defeat the Federation would be interesting, but it would a season to do it right.

They've introduced the Enterprise years before we knew it, the Klingon war is over.

Let's explore some of the more obscure canon aspects, Cardassian first contact would be very good for example. Their lack of action and alleged contact in this era (bar Kelvin) has always been an elephant in the room for me. What if there is a species, the Cardassians, who conquers planets but doesn't want anyhting to do with the Federation? How would the prime direction react to that? Cardies have a ton of occupied planets, but the Federation are interfering with cultures if they get involved? It is an interesting dilema and would fill in some holes in the canon, there is no way the Federation wouldn't have encountered Cardies in TOS.
