No they're saying it's a visual reboot, with the stories and lore being prime.

I saw someone in the comments claiming that the reason TMP and onward wasn't as simple looking as TOS is because the creators thought the audience were idiots.

    Like, what the hell?

    I watched the entire video.

They don't like it but they accept it.

TOS was great, and it looked fantastic, especially for the time. But there's probably a reason why Roddenberry et al had literally everything redesigned at the first opportunity where a suitable budget was available.

If the boss did it, you can't really blame the Discovery producers.

To be fair they seem to like it a lot, but as a redesign in preference to Ryan Church's effort. They don't regard it as compatible with the original within canon, which is slightly different to liking it aesthetically.

Yeah, the premise of the comment was basically the audience wouldn't understand that simpler was more futuristic.

Whether the size of the Enterprise is the same or not, the deck layout has changed noticeably. There is only one bubble stop the saucer, meaning the bridge is a deck lower. The neck is shorter, meaning fewer decks.

If engineering is now on deck 14 or 15 instead of deck 19, does that constitute more than a "visual reboot" since it alters potential plots where people have to get around the ship?

no because travel time has always been the speed of plot.

Yes but if sickbay or the bridge or whatever is in a different part of the ship, surely that means something?

The same is true of Paris. A potential story where Kirk or whoever has to get from one end of the city to the other will play out entirely differently in the Into Darkness-style version seen in DSC to the one Picard visited in "We'll always have Paris".

So how far does the "visual reboot" extend? Does it just cover the original series or is it everything we've seen so far except the first season of Discovery?

Anybody else notice that the Inner Primary Hull of the Discovery seems to be just about the same size as the TOS Enterprises' Primary Hull?
It would be hilarious as Hell if They say that the Discovery was originally an old Constitution Class ship hull that was stripped down and rebuilt to become what it is now.

Was the location of engineering consistent in the first place?

Don’t know if the neck is shorter, it’s longer forward so it may be an optical illusion that it’s shorter

Nope, but even before Paramount canonized the location it was generally agreed upon that the original TOS engine room was somewhere down in the stardrive section close to the warp nacelles. You still have the occasional viewer who thinks the engine room is in the saucer section but those are definitely in the very tiny and insignificant minority of opinion.

The windows on the neck are almost identical to the TOS version. Say what we want about any alterations done to the ship, but they went out of their way to put pretty much all the windows where they were on the original and TOS-Remastered filming models.

It was through the red door that goes "swoosh" in the corridor, either on the right or the left depending which end of the corridor you are stood.
