USS Enterprise (eventually) on Discovery?

This is basically the same stuff he was coming out with in 2001 over Enterprise, but now he's reconciled to that show. In another 15 years he'll be moaning about how the latest series contradicts the established canon from Discovery.
Yup. I admire his passion but that really is a lot of fan rage.

Personally, I like the redesign of the Enterprise. It's faithful to the original overall while still adding enough of the Discovery-style design ethic to make it fit. I've always preferred the swept back pylons of the Refit so incorporating those is fine by me. Bridge window? I'm also good with that as it fits the universe. Glowing panels on the nacelles? YES! I always thought the TOS Enterprise should have them anyway.

Overall though, the redesign stays very much true to the original, just with some slight adjustments to keep it looking futuristic by modern standards. The DSC team was doomed to only please approximately 50% of the fan base regardless of what they did anyway so why not? 2018 is NOT 1965. Our concept of the future is NOT 1965's concept of the future. I honor TOS greatly for its role in bringing sci-fi into the mainstream and of course, it's the first Trek ever. However, at least I am capable of both honoring TOS' rightful place in history AND enjoying the udpated look we get with Discovery now.

They like it.
Wait till they find out it's 2km long :p

I'm not knocking them, they've done some cool stuff along with the not so cool. I liked how Andy Probert turned out to be an even bigger nerd about nacelle clearance and Roddenberry's rules than either of them.

The glowing panels are interesting. My dad built a TOS kit in the seventies, and he said they were supposed to glow blue because the kit said to paint inside part of the nacelles blue. I think he is mostly remembering the refit A model he made me in the nineties, and conflating the two in his memory, but it is a thought. Every other enterprise has indeed had glowing blue nacelles, even the refit in TMP.

The original TMP Enterprise kit had 4 metallic stickers for the sides of the nacelles.

Matt Jeffries mentioned in several interviews that they had wanted to do the glow and it was in the plans for the shooting model, but they hadn't had the budget to actually make it happen. I'm pretty sure that's where the DSC team got the idea.

My refit was the A, with lights and sound. He seemed to be talking about his TOS kit from 71.
Actually, he's correct to a degree. I built an AMT kit, straight stock out of the box, with no modifications to see how it would look and have a retro vibe to it. The instruction sheet lists the intercoolers you attach to the inner part of the warp engines be painted "Steel Blue". I'm pretty sure it wasn't for the insides of the nacelles, but just those intercoolers.

But the instruction sheet has the line pointing there, and it could be thought of to paint the inner grilles of the nacelles the steel blue color.

To those arguing that it's an alternate universe or an alternate timeline..Alex Kurtzman just said this in a recent interview..

"there’s no barrier on what we can do in the show versus the films, and since the films are in different timelines we’re fortunate not to worry about that. What I can tell you is if we bring in characters from The Original Series, they have to adhere to canon. So anything that’s been mentioned in TOS, either storyline or character-wise, we have to stay consistent with."

If it wasn't the original timeline or universe..then this wouldn't matter.
